Videos: Nokia N8 Swype Tips (Download Swype for Symbian^3 at the Ovi Store) #BlindType

| October 17, 2010 | 14 Replies

Have you tried Swype yet on your Nokia N8? You can download it for free at the Ovi Store (Thanks Josh Klubi for the heads up). I’ve only used swype before on the N97 and let’s just say resistive screens (especially of that calibur – N900/X3-02 totally beats it out on sensitivity) and fast swyping doesn’t really mix.

Once you install it, go to settings, turn it on (and whatever other settings) reboot N8 and it will take over the landscape keyboard. Why on earth the portrait T9 is still there. As much as I love it, I need to get used to the landscape QWERTY keyboard and learn to use portrait QWERTY!!!. Also it’s very awkward to swype in landscape.

If you’re new to Swype, (or even if not) Below are some Swype tips. Yes you can learn these on the go and the app gives you tips during typing but neither are nearly as helpful at getting you up to speed as these tips below (because certain actions aren’t exactly obvious…like holding on Q to change language).

Oh, speaking of Android and Swype – as cool as Swype is – have you seen Blind Type?

Now this is witchcraft. And btw, solves the whole accuracy problem of traditional touch QWERTY without having to learn how to SWYPE.

Check out how you don’t even need to have a keyboard – just correct relative spacing between keys. Unfortunately this seems to have been bought by google. So I’m not sure whether future versions will be available across the field. I love the delete word gesture.

I mean just look at it.

    Just a note:
The symbian version doesnt have double tap to correct.

      Update:
It does have double tap – but you have to tap in the grey box – not on the main screen where your text is displayed.

You might try SlideIT keyboard. Available on the OVI for almost a year and works very much like “Swype” – in fact, I prefer SlideIT, which seems to accommodate for the eccentricities of my texting technique better than Swype…

swype rocks using it for past 24hours

Not available for german language… Does anybody have the .sis? I would love to try it in english.

Swype works awesome on the Nokia N8! Thank you so much for the post!

    • Mannion

Has the link been closed down. there seems to be no Swype for N8 on OVI anymore?

“Speed” isn’t as speedy as I thought.

As soon as I saw the “speedy typing” part at 0:35 I felt challenged to try writing this same paragraph on my N95 so I could see if Swyping really faster. So I took my N95 from my pocket, opened the built-in Notes application and had T9 enabled on English language. Then I played the video at 0:35 and started typing on my phone at the same time as the guy started Swyping. I finished writing the paragraph first. Then wait about 3 or 4 seconds until he would have finished swiping. So, it’s very cool and everything but T9 is still faster (if you know how to use T9), so I appreciate that Nokia has kept the T9 keyboard on portrait (though I would REALLY like an option to enable Qwerty on portrait, instead of being locked to T9).

What I would simply LOVE to have, though, would be BlindType. This looks so much AWESOME and I would definitely love to use it. I would so like this on my new N8! (when it finally ship here, of course).

Well normal portrait qwerty is coming to S^3 after that the swype will also work in portrait. How ever I find portrait swype bit hard to use if compare to landscape.

  • Stylinred

looks complicated oO i’d have to try it out i guess but from watching the video its like wtf?

Actually not that bad. Worth giving a go as you’ll speed up in any form of text input given time. And there’s some actual intuitiveness to this (though I can’t get over having to use two hands to use it)

  • Nocare

Swype in portrait is hard to use, but typing on it is more easier.

Typing in n97 mini with swype is shit, to slow and always make mistake,

  • srimadhavan

please some one send the link r send the setup file for swype….to my mail……
