Video: Nokia N8 versus Samsung Galaxy S – UI/Browser/Gallery/Navigation/Speed Test

| October 18, 2010 | 42 Replies

Smartphoneenvy takes a look at the Nokia N8 but closely against the google Android powered Samsung Galaxy S (Arguably one Android phones).

It’s in four parts.

Browser (oh the woes). It hurts to watch the stupid Nokia Browser after knowing just how incredible MicroB (a Maemo Nokia Browser on N900) for the association of Nokia and Browser to be tarnished again by this poor excuse of a browser. Opera Mobile 10 helps a lot. I can’t wait for the new browser that’s supposedly just as good as anything on the market (even MicroB?)

Not included but we know N8 wipes the floor with the SGS

but which phone is better ?
I have N8 but thinking to change it for SGS.
On n8 gamse working terrible, on sgs wordking fine. SGS have bigger screen, better browser..

    which phone is better?

    • alex68

SGS multitasking is a joke. You can just really multitask heavy processes (IPhone just disables it!) as it lags a lot. The GPS does not work properly.

      • Alex

the samsung’s gps was pretty fast in the vid. what are your arguments?

        • alex68

You can google the GPS problem. It seems that there has been a workaround. I did not check it myself as I am not interested in this phone at all. My son has an SGS phone and that will be our last purchase from Samsung.

          • Georg

That’s the problem with you- you talk before you check. That’s why I am still waiting for that apology regarding my link to the N8 camera thread and that’s also why you should have checked that there is a new FW for the SGS fixing GPS. Something that wasn’t possible for the N97 eg ;-)

        • Jim

The GPS sucks on galaxy s. I can tell you that, cause a friend of mine has one. but besides that he is really pleased with the phone.

      • alex68

I meant SGS cannot multitask properly.

  • Juxtapox

First of all, GPS is not meant to work indoors. Secondly, by letting unit lock and listen to GPS before making a test makes a huge difference to test results – a cold start will last minutes whereas a warm or hot start takes seconds.

  • Juxtapox

    Just a few points

    - Nokia is supposedly in the process of readying an improved browser for the Symbian^3 series. It should be available as a free (of course) update still during Q4/2010. (Nokia “must” have it available by the time the E7 Communicator is launched).

    - According to users, there is a ** Notable ** difference between available talk and standby time between Nokia and any comparable Android phone. This is not a surprise considering Nokia’s several decade experience in power management. Loads of business users say an Android phone really does not cut it in demanding business reasons, for various reasons, one of them being unsatisfactory operating time.

    • Roger

Not ‘supposedly’ releasing a new browser, they def. are, alex68 has used it (see below) and it’s almost ready for release.

The power management is in large part due to Symbian being a VASTLY better OS than Android in so many ways (note: this is different to the visual interface appearance). Compared to Symbian, Android is immature, inefficient (runs on a virtual machine thus requiring more powerful processor and sucking battery life), missing features, unstable and so on.

      • Dave

Couldn’t agree more; I’ve recently been using an Android phone (ZTE Blade), and yes its visually more appealing than S^1. But under the hood functionality really isn’t a patch on S^1, let alone S^3.

Although I have found Android 2.1 to be pretty solid.

  • gruik

Compare to the S GS, this N8 is very disappointing. the web browser is a martyrdom for the Nokia…

    • alex68

N8 is very disappointing? There is opera and UC browser. Besides, new browser is coming pretty soon and I have seen it on E7 already.

This kind of demo is rather superficial and can not show the real cons and prices of Android which I don’t think I would consider buying a phone built on.

  • Pete

What I hate so much that my brain bleeds is Nokia remaining silent about these future improvements. Or Nokia isn’t loud enough, I sure have not heard anything official about upcoming new browser, yet Internet already know it is coming.

I just don’t see why, they _must_ be idiots, since it could be a decisive factor for many who are considering buying N8, especially because the current browser is subpar at best.

And it’s the same thing with the portrait keyboard. That one is coming too, but Nokia doesn’t say anything about it. For this one, they might be too embarrased of their retarded choice of not having one in the first place.

First official statement for any recent new Android phone was whether it was going to get Froyo.

Nokia just didn’T have enough time for a good browser. They thought “well people want to watch videos on that large screen or play angry brids but surf the web?”.
The Droid had a good browser 1 year before the N8 will get one, you really have to ask what they were doing and thinking over at Nokia.

    • alex68

      • Georg

Oh boy, you are an excited one, even you keyboard seems to be affected. And you say you have a child? A frightening thought.

I never said that Android is better, when and where did I say that? See, I didn’t- again you speak before you think.

I am complaining about certain things that Nokia really does wrong, and not having a decent browser ready by now is really screwing it up.

As for you excuse for your acusation you made before checking my link:

But I ask myself why I am talking to a guy who does nothing but berate people who differ even so slightly in their opinion to your own.

I hope 68 isn’t the year of your birth and you can learn and improve before you become an dault and that you don’t really have offspring.

        • alex68

my little son disturbed me and put caps lock on when I typing…

yeah, you may never say Android is better (cos, it is not), but the fact is you barely generously give the credits when it comes good things by Nokia, and you seem to utilize every opportunity to criticize and then soon show your admiration to android , in a subtle way.

          I call it “hypocrisy”.

Here I mostly exchange the info with people that I know and am allowed to tell.

I especially hate two kinds of things: lie and hypocrisy. Sorry, I can not tolerant these two.

          • Georg

IF I thought Android was better I might have kept the Desire I had for 2 months.

IF I was a hypocrite…oh boy, just look it up in a dictionary, ok? I say what I like about the N8 (if you finally hit that link you will find out and maybe apologize after all) such as the camera, but I also say what I don’t like, such as the browser or release date (here in Austria according to Nokia Austria’s facebook page second half of December!!!).

As for lies- yeah, who likes a liar? Did I lie? Where? When? Did you accuse me and others of what knows god what Yes, and you continue to ignore it, that’s what I call a troll- someone who berates people for no reason and still has not the decency to see when he was wrong.

  • dsmobile

people should remember that maps with pinch zoom is also much faster than version that comes with N8 first firmware. this test was done with that older maps that has much slower scrolling and zooming.

Browser in N8 sure sucks but the new version is much better. Flash content still sure will be lot to handle with 680Mhz CPU unless they can use GPU for flash rendering.

  • alex68

No matter how hard Nokia’s haters troll by lying and cheating, N8 will be the best selling phone by Nokia of Year 2010.

    Mark my words here.

    • Georg

Ah I thought as much, once cornered you just blindly strike and accuse anybody of anything.
As for your “words”- they show, again, that you have no clue. The N8 could be perfect and flawless and still it wouldn’t be the best selling Nokia phone this year, not by a large margin. Why? I don’t want to waste my time on you, sorry, maybe someone else will explain that to you.

    • alex68

The term of best selling phone is for the class phones on par with N8.

  • murble

I know people love comparing the top end android and apple phones to the N8, as the N8 is currently the “flagship”. However, its not priced the same as the Galaxy S.

Has anyone ever done a comparison of the phone vs Android handsets in the same price range? I think that would be pretty interesting.

    • murble

Scratch that. I see they are about the same price now.

    • Georg

Don’t know about other markets but here in Austria and in Germany too they cost exactly the same. The N8 has 8GB more but has a larger screen. Both are the respective high-end model. So I think they are perfectly comparable.

  • Janko

Wow, the N8 totally wiped the floor with the Galaxy S!

    …in being slow.

  • Duncan

    Georg :

I can tell you right now that the supposed fix for the gps did nothing. Do a google search for it. I had a Captivate for a two weeks which included the firmware fix. The GPS is not fixed on these phones. IT IS A HARDWARE PROBLEM.

  • kevin

Man youtube on Android DESTROYS N8, seriously I hope someone makesa good youtube app soon cause that was pathetic….

    • murble

I cant view the video until I get home, were they using the S60 5th ed Youtube client, or were they just using the Youtube webpage in the browser?

      • alex68

yes, it is S60V5 Youtube client. When new browser is out, there will be new Youtube client as well, I suppose.

        • murble

Since Google uses QT in some of their other applications, it wouldn’t surprise me if they were working on a QT client.

  • keerthisagar

    hi Jay,

I appreciate the work you have done to bring to our notice about Nokia N8 since April i guess !!

But these kind of posts are really useless, please stop comparing it with SGS.

I loved your Black and white shots from N8.

i request you to discuss more about the unique points about N8 ( there aren’t many to discuss as you guys have covered almost everything).

lets hope Nokia brings N9 quickly.

  • Luis

    Galaxy S, N8 is a shit

  • Jcno

Why don’t they show us the Nokia N8′s camera, in Low Light conidions, the Galaxy doesnt even have a flash on it… Maybe HDMI output as well? Also Ovi Maps is completely free….

    • Jcno

DW about this comment, I made a mistake…

  • inacurate

Anyone who knows me knows I love Nokia.

Have to admit, the GS UI seems a little easier to get around. Unfortunately the user seemed to be in a rush tapping around, and had a number of non-responsive clicks on both handsets, so I cannot easily determine from these videos if that is a UI issue or just bad tapping.

The calendar for example, changing views is a tap away. You don’t have to “open” the day to see what’s coming as along the bottom you have a few lines of entries.

A lot of little things like that, make me want to use the GS after watching JUST the first two videos, including factoring in the N8s’ camera!

  • himanshoo

Guys, I would simply recommend u to stop comparing N8 with SGS, its simply waste of time here, I agree may be SGS has few drawbacks, like we say, no man or phone is best…. I agree N8 is a very good phone with rich features, but that doesn’t mean u have to compare it with N8, SGS is a master piece world has ever imagined after an Iphone, its not just abt those few things that u guys are fighting over here, there are lots more, u guys have no idea what to compare with which! Its like comparing a Porsche 911 with a BMW 5 series.. even I was a samsung hater previously, but I can’t resist saying hats off to Samsung for their brilliant work… WOW SGS WOW!, and more Wow for android….

    • webby

I’ve had a SGS for about 4 months and I certainly wouldn’t call it a masterpiece. This is using 2.1 and 2.2. Samsung just can’t do software (even someone else’s). But hey, at least the GPS actually works now. Only took them 3 months for that.
