Video: Nokia N8 New Firmware unofficial PR1.1 demo, Changelogs, possibly by next Friday?

| January 15, 2011 | 55 Replies

So, some of you guys have taken the plunge with the unofficial PR1.1 from Navifirm. The official release for consumers is due either for Ovi Suite and/or O.T.A.

There’s a video below by jumojn who lists changes such as
Visual:
-New Wlan Icon
-New clock animation if you select for the screensaver to have music song listed! (Told by jumojn)

Other:
-Overall fast and very smooth performance

However, this is what Alex68 is able to see on N8s he’s been using with PR1.1. These are pretty much what Alex68 revealled back in October - so early in fact that Nokia pulled our video! It does strike me odd that PR1.1 with revampedish browser wouldn’t be included in the bigger 2.0 update (the big 50+ new features) where we saw the portrait QWERTY next to Jo Harlow. Alex68 doesn’t explicitly mention portrait QWERTY any more, except “new split input interface (cool)”.

Guys, verify features and bug fixes for 1.1. I wish I remembered correctly and figured out everything…

- New features : landscape dialer, search for music, pictures and etc with new split input interface (cool), cached web pages with forward and backward buttons, configuration of view for functions,(grid and list), navigation using address from contact book

- Bug fixes: WLAN search, the functionality of not saving the message for SMS, keyboard …

- Touch responsiveness : people should have receive with yesterdays’ update

- stability

- minor improvement in mail setup and etc

If you have bought phone lately, it might have some of these things already even though the firmware release date was Sep 18. depending on production time of course.

So it’s a mixed bag between the unofficial PR1.1 and what Alex68 has told us AND has shown us in TWO demo videos.

“It should have updates for email box, camera, homescreen, animation effects…

After 1.1 release, I may be able to tell. I have not seen or tested it for about 2 months and a lot of new things added already for sure…”

When is this coming?

“1.1 is coming earliest next Friday unless something really urgent or special for NOKIA to release it, according to my understanding…”

The mini Apps Update may have been just to test the servers and see how the OTA update would fare. Some have reported experiencing some changes with it whilst others haven’t. I’ve definitely noticed my lock button no instantly turning on/off – it’s totally different to my friend’s N8.

“now it seems that Nokia are testing its new software update servers and service infrastructure to prepare for the upcoming series of real big updates. The testing had to offer something to N8 users at minimal…”

And then of course there’s the even bigger update for 2.0 with the 50+ new enhancements.

Oh yeah the video:

The Music screen saver animation is available with people with Apps Update 1.0, but not likeable effect.

  2. deep space bar says:

    SWEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTT!!!!

  3. newtype says:

I would have liked to see the texting speed/responsiveness from the qwerty, but all in all, nice preview!

  4. J.Gray says:

Dammit Nokia! Stop teasing us, and give us the update already! All in all, that looks amazing! :D

  5. Nitish Kumar says:

Now what is like amazing? Do you spotted any special effect at all yet? PR1.1 is not like amazing visually as I see

  6. rencarlo says:

can you please upload the firmware files.because its no longer available in navifirm.please.
want to try it on my n8. please!

  7. zippy says:

What does the Music screen saver animation does with the new app update?
I dont see any different, yet.

  8. SGean says:

Going off topic, i’ve recently installed swype and apparently swype automaticaly saves any word into your N8 dictionary after you press space. So now my N8′s dictionary is filled with useless words that is really irritating when typing a message. Anyone knows how i can remove these words without doinga full format?

    • Sakthi says:

As for as I tried, you handed to feed in the word which you need to delete and then click swype button, swype still request a confirmation to delete the word enjoy..

    • Jamie says:

Yeah highlight the word and touch the swipe button and it will give you the option to remove it.

      • SGean says:

ok, so i found out the bunch of words are not saved in swype dictionary but in the default symbian one instead. Is there anyway to remove these words?

  9. Andre N says:

I guess the PR 1.1 just improve several performance and apps.
And the PR 2.0 is 50+ enhancements and etc.
PR 1.1 and 2.0 is no Qt.
The Qt based UI and web browser will be come with the PR 2.2.
    What do you think bro?

  10. nocare says:

the major update will be without option and back menu at the screen bottom

  11. Jamie says:

Awesome! A useless landscape dialer and no useful portrait keyboard. Where are Nokias priorities?! Have you ever seen anyone post or ask for a landscape dialer??!!! Seriously sort your sh&t Nokia!!!

  12. chfyfx says:

disagree. i think it is for car bluetooth dialing, while you have the cellphone in landscape mode for video or navigation. it would be very nice to have it.

  13. allmächd says:

The Landscape Dialer is a separatly hack, not in the Firmware

  14. despisethesun says:

You know what would be an awesome update to see in the new firmware? Saved settings in the camera app. I can wait for a new UI, but not saving the settings? Another software failure by Nokia, doubly inexcusable since they got it so right on the N900.

    • kamuscasio says:

There’s a “user defined” settings in the “scene modes” right? Why not make one and try it

      • Nitish Kumar says:

That doesn’t work for Macro Mode part at least. You need to do all the shit again and again.

Will open up in User Defined mode, you will find that its not focusing, you will “tap (1)” on options, then will “tap (2)” on scene mode, then will “tap (3)” on closeup, then “tap(4)” on select and then will come back to camera to find that flash is still on, one more “tap (5)” on flash icon, then one more “tap (6)” for off icon and now finally you can take a macro shot if its still there.

        Someone rightly said
“Its not the technology, its what you do with it”

        • alex68 says:

Dude, what are you thinking about? I have said CLEAR PR 1.1 included much MUCH(add one more much here) more stuff than I described earlier…

I just don’t want to leak too much and want to leave findings for you guys when PR1.1 is finally available. As an adult, learn to be patient and judge it when time comes…

        • alex68 says:

If you are smart enough, you should get what I meant…

          • Nitish Kumar says:

            :)

I understand and really want them to come up with something that is free of such annoyances. If UI changes like the one I mentioned about camera are coming after 1-2 months, then sure I am not feeling myself defending Symbian^3 that easily.

Btw N8 is my main phone as I write a blog that it currently centered around Nokia

  15. ikke says:

is there anyone who knows when the PR 2.0 is planned to be released ??

  16. alex68 says:

Sorry everybody, i think I am having very severe memory loss recently. I am now very confusing about 1.1 new features and the minor updates.

Some people pointed out that they could navigate using address from contact book and had local searches with the splitting input interfaces already. Some people say nothing noticed after update and some people say N8 works faster.

Can anyone tell me what you think about those new features I mentioned and about the recent update. Please mark your purchase date.

Correction: configuration of view for functions,(grid and list) should be organize of view for application menu. it means you can use finger to move up/down/right/left an icon of app/setting/etc in the application menu.

Sorry for my poor english and typos Sometimes if I don’t have time to think before writing or I am too tired, my english can go very poor and typo can be very terrible…

    • deep space bar says:

why don’t you list everything down on a piece of paper

      it would help

      and i bought mine october 29th 2010
first batch week 10 i think
      cause the it says 10.09.10

      • alex68 says:

I remember you say N8 speeding up after the update right? But What about new features, do you see any of them present on your N8?

        • deep space bar says:

it’s just more responsive and smoother

and i think the sound quality has improved alittle since i listen to heavy bass music after the update then song sound a lot fuller now

          • alex68 says:

            Ok, thanks for your confirmation.

I was in big confusion when some new features were said not to be new for some N8 users. But later I figured out those people usually purchased N8 in a much later time …

          • deep space bar says:

boot/shut down time is faster as well
and the browser performance is improved

    • Don says:

(not directly aimed at alex68 :)

“Some people pointed out that they could navigate using address from contact book”

That’s always been there for example, and I got my N8 the day it was available. Same for grid/list view and reorganization, it’s all there.

I compared 2 N8′s, one with and one without the “apps update”. There is no difference in rotation lag, no difference in sound output, no difference in homescreen or effects animations, no difference in folder opening, and no difference in camera startup time. The update is only 1 MB, and everyone is seeing (wanting to see) huge differences that are not there. It’s the 011.012 firmware, regardless of when you bought it. If there would be differences, why would the numbers be identical? (for example some C7′s are sold at PR1.01, so obviously there is some difference)

As for PR1.1 you know this much better than most so I don’t comment on it, hope it brings some improvements :)

      • alex68 says:

        Thanks.

Do you have local searches (phone book, pictures, music etc) with split input screen?

Does your N8 have noticeable rotation and touch lags for the screen before the update?

        • Don says:

Search is split input (never use it, so don’t know if it was like that always, but it’s unlikely this changed in a 1MB update)

There is sometimes lag in rotation/touch input, but I couldn’t see any difference with the pre and post update N8′s, they’re both sometimes faster than other times (ie rotating them in both hands at the same time, no significant difference)

What is hopeful though is that the screenorientation qml demo is much faster at rotating (it rotates in all 4 orientations) than usual, so it’s not the hardware.

          • alex68 says:

Thanks a lot. It is likely that I messed up the things about the new features likely. As I used 1.0 so shortly and didn’t play it so much. I have used 1.1 most and have found out things that I thought they were new to 1.0…

About the touch/screen overall responsiveness, it was an software issue as I mentioned before. I am feeling 1.1 has much better touch responsiveness and screen rotation is noticeably faster…

          • Don says:

Like I said, I only talked about the tiny apps update from last week.

For future updates I am always happy to read updates from you! Seen some nice things to look forward, curious about the things you haven’t told us about, and waiting anxiously :) I have no reason to believe there will be no touch screen etc improvements. Thanks again for your time and patience always!

    • SGean says:

Hi alex, do you have an news on when will smart dialing be avaliable for N8 firmware that supports chinese input?

      Thanks

  17. pradeep says:

after tht app update surely my n8 text input response is became smoother then before.i use my cell most for sms,i feel when the number of sms goes beyond 800 takes time to show up the messages so delete the sms regularly and keep it below 500 sms in inbox..also feels over all response of the system is also better thn before :)
