Nokia N8 New Firmware PR1.1 due 24th January 2011? PR2.0 February 15th and PR3.0 in summer?

| January 21, 2011 | 82 Replies

Some more rumours/speculations on the Nokia N8 firmware. This coming from GSM Arena (cheers to @UGN999 for the tip) comment section so just take note of that.

They’ve provided a changelog, though nothing new that we haven’t seen before, more a collection of what folks have said about the PR1.1 released on navifirm or what Alex68 has already told us. Other than possibly suggest that the new browser, draggable homescreen is NOT coming to PR1.1. As noted before, it would make sense having such a big change included in the 50+ improvements box, and Alex68 had been silent on those features. What we have received in the past couple of weeks though are little mini Software updates. Two occasions if you’re lucky. Perhaps testing the servers for the bigger releases?

Alex68 has mentioned that the earliest this was supposed to be due is today. Note the earliest, so it could and will be due later than that. The GSM Arena comment gives the following dates for the new firmware:

PR1.1: January 24th (Monday next week, 3 days) Seriously, this has to be out soon. It might be due so close to PR2.0 there’s no point having PR1.1, just bundle the damn thing into PR2.0

PR2.0: February 15th (during MWC) – The 50+ Update pack.

PR3.0: Summer << Anything before September? PR 3.0 is when Symbian UI completely changes to what was expected to be Symbian^4. This time last year it appeared that Symbian^3 handsets would not be able to update to Symbian^4 but what with the changes, we’re now going to receive ALL updates as and when they’re ready.

They have provided a changelog

What I would like to see in PR 2.0 – the native web browser’s ability to load/display various language fonts other than what we have now. For example, India has many languages and if a person lives in Europe/NAM & if he has N8, he may not able able to view the websites in his mother tongue. What is Nokia’s solution for that when it comes to Symbian OS ?.
The other workaround is to install Opera Mini, but native web browser is always the best to have.

Iphone’s and Android’s have no problem in displaying the various fonts because I believe (I never owned one actually)

Or Nokia should let us to install whatever font we like as in Nokia N900 (which I use mainly to surf the web at home).

    • Stylinred says:

i agree i got fed up trying to browse chinese websites

i tried opera i can browse but i cant watch videos -_- (from say youku)

  2. Bala says:

    Typo in my post -
It should read “Iphone’s and Android’s have no problem in displaying the various fonts I believe (I never owned one actually)

  3. Son says:

I think I chose the wrong path by buying a Nokia phone… I really love the camera on this phone, but that’s about it…. everything else is unusable and crap. Might as well ride this out and psyche myself out in hopes that this company actually does some work to improve their beloved N8.

  4. benjo says:

where did you buy your tripod? and how much?

  5. vlgr says:

What happened to all the rumors around the camera ? There some posts on twitter about them bringing up the compression to 95% and further improving on picture quality..

  6. Moammed says:

well, i’m soooooo excited about it. because i really suffering this OS. BUT, i dont believe it nokia always gives false promises and there are always delays. so we hope its gonna happen and we’ll see…

  7. Moammed says:

23/Jan, No Update. so typical from nokia. :I

  8. Dr.Tek says:

I’ll believe it when it actually arrives. Anything that is leaked because Nokia NEVER addresses any rumors (ie. N97).

  9. Emmanuel says:

January 24 th and so …?

  10. Nivaldo says:

    ok… where’s the firmware!? arrgghh!!

  11. Aceepono says:

I’m sure we will all be disappointed one more time. This is Nokia for you. I still love my N8 though

  12. JuanForAll says:

Good bye Nokia N8, fed up with all the false hopes!

    Hello Motorola Droid X…

  13. Andy B says:

so much for pr1.1 being released on the 24th. To be honest im getting sick of waiting for this new update. All nokia meens these days is decent hardware but rubbish software. I give up on nokia!

  14. Imtiaz383 says:

    It’s the 25th Jan 2011. Where’s the update OTA?
I’ve got the PR1.1 from Navifirm about 20 days ago and flashed it using Phoenix. But it was not complete when i first got it, just like you specified in your post that it will have many new features…it doesn’t. The only boring new features i got is the new WLAN icon, Landscape dialler and that’s all….i don’t see anything else, or maybe i can guess the performance has been more improved…where is the “search” option in the music player and libruary? Or maybe i don’t have it because when i first got it, it wasn’t complete…i don’t see much of the changes at all….and where is the ota update? I’m not getting anything. This is rubbish, a small update taking way above the given time limit. I wonder what the PR2.0 update would be like, some bloody more lazy time then? Bloody Delays.
And the other thing for symbian^3 guys, there is no Symbian^4. It has been discountinued, instead we all Symbian^3 users are gonna recieve updates which will evolve all the way through into what we call the symbian^4.

  15. cocoagua says:

all the dates were speculations. nobody officially gave out a release dates for any of the updates. almost all of the info we get regarding nokia updates are based on rumors. i don’t get why people are so caught up on and just choose to hold on the rumors than just wait for something concrete from nokia. updates may or may not be given out today. when they said Q1, they could have meant the last day of march. when nokia india said “sometime in January” they could have easily meant the end of January. what’s with all these comments?

    • Andy B says:

Whats with all the comments? Its the fact that people pay good money for smartphone thats not so smart with its buggy firmware. People are sick of waiting for it to be updated. I am a big nokia fan have been since my first nokia the 3310 however when my current contracts over im jumping ship for a droid!

  16. Simon says:

I too am getting fed up of waiting for this update. My wife has a HD Desire and it’s always worked a dream from day one – unlike my ruddy N8 which seems to crash at least three times a day! I’ve had this phone for 6 weeks now and its driving me mad!! If I can find someone daft enough to buy it on Ebay its gone and I’ll be getting a new HD Desire Z. Not a good day as I’ve been a die hard Nokia user for over 10 years. Nokia need to sort their game out as the smartphone market has moved on. The software is as important as the gadgets thay cram into the device – if it don’t work right then its not up for the job and I’m moving on!

  17. csacseg says:

Where’s the new firmware?? it s feb. man??? I read in some forum jan. 15th in another one 18 and now 24 so if waiting so more for PR1.1 than PR2.0 when a coming?

  18. Andy B says:

Its now the 4th of feb and no update. Im hoping nokia dont release pr1.1 and decide to release pr2.0 lets face it there taking so long to release pr1.1 that they could do this.

  19. Sanjeev Zopfan says:

In my N8, all updates install(ed) correctly, but only 2: Phone Apps Update and Apps Update 1.0. fail to install. Just this message: Failed. Now even they’ve stopped appearing in the list of ‘Available Updates’ (though they do show in ‘Update History list’.

How to solve this problem. Even checked/tried thru OVI suite. But ovi is only offering to install “Galaxy on Fire, Need for Speed, Real Golf”.

  20. huzafa says:

its 15 may pr 2 not released……………………..(-) (-) nokia sucks

  21. Beli says:

Its 19th may. No sign of any update. Is nokia alive?? where are updates??

  22. abhay says:

ya its being annoying for me to hear these update news. thats been just a big big fake. Nokia devlopers are sleeping and having fun while we waste our money on their so called n8 shit :@
