What features from Symbian would you like to see in Windows Phone?
It is an inevitability that Nokia will be releasing Windows Phone powered devices. They have publicly stated that their primary smartphone focus is the Windows Phone platform. While the dust has settled slightly since the initial uproar, I wanted to take a look of things with as much of an open mind as I can do, from the user perspective.
Many of the comments we’ve been reading point out all the things Windows Phone 7 cannot do, but yet Symbian (and worse, other platforms) can do this also. To them, Windows Phone 7 is essentially a “downgrade” that they are not willing to accept. So, what if Windows Phone was an upgrade – would that make it more palatable? In essence, what are the features you would want in Windows Phone that were utterly critical to the Symbian experience? Things that you would not consider Nokia Windows Phone for if it wasn’t there, but might if it was included? It doesn’t have to be something remotely possible. It’s a “what if” anything goes type scenarios. I guess you could add Maemo 5 to the mix too as we’re basically talking Nokia OS features.
If you just hate Windows/Microsoft branding/’ecosystem’ that’s a totally different matter. That’s totally OK, everyone’s allowed their personal preferences
. I really, really love Nokia and that’s why I want Windows Phone to succeed so that Nokia would succeed.

BTW, in a related post, you guys had an awesome discussion about the Hardware you’d like to see in the Nokia Windows Phones
I could have continued to hate and deny this MS-Nok thing, or try to assess the situation and see what constructive thing we can do. This reminds of this post on the day of the announcement. I was pretty livid. Now as I read the analysis from people in our community and try out windows phone 7 for myself, the future for Nokia fans does not seem to bleak. We all hate it when people bash MeeGo and Symbian without ever trying it. Does Windows Phone deserve the same treatment? Ah, that’s another post altogether.

Seriously, the only thing I want from Windows is the browser and the keyboard. Put that on Symbian and you’re done.
Yesterday I had the chance to play around with a WP 7. I hate tiles! I want widget-based homescreens and not just a list of ugly looking tiles. If anything, I would like to see Android on a Nokia device. But honestly, if PR 2.0 features a full qwerty portrait keyboard and the browser finally matches up the competition’s then I’m all happy with Symbian and don’t see a need for Android.
Having used an lg windows phone seven mobile for the last week I’ve returned it. Little things annoyed me:
1. Battery life- the low battery meter only showed up when the battery was on its last legs, normally when rhett was no charger to hand.
2. The camera was dire compared to the nokia n8.
3. Ringtones – the selection on the lg was weak not much difference between the selection of thirty. Couldn’t find a way to add my own.
4. No spotify client, although they are working on one there is no official release date.
5. Transmitter, love this on the n8 but only radio on lg. Also next year in the uk they turn off the analogue stations and switch fully to digital so this feature will allow me to listen to music on my old car radio.
It wasn’t all bad the office suite was top notch, internet explorer was great, music player well implemented and xbox live and xbox live extras worked really well. I keep realising that I only use multi tasking for spotify so didn’t miss it on windows phone.
I don’t see myself buying a nokia windows phone next year and hopefully will pick up a dual core symbian instead. Windows phone seven should be ready for me come 2014 by which time the mobile landscape should be easier to make out. Good luck Nokia!
The next year may be make or break for Nokia and Symbian. If Symbian gets the new UI this year along with the new Gigahertz phones and actually maintain it’s market share, then we might see the complete evolution of Symbian and Nokia may decide to keep it after all. Just replace MeeGo with WP7. You have to keep in mind that Symbian is Nokia’s pride and they are not going let it go away/die that easily, especially with the kind of app support the Ovi Store has been getting with Symbian^3. Even the CTO said repeatedly OSes don’t just go away. Two years is a lot of time and a lot can happen in it. Just a thought.
On another note, gotta love my N8.
In terms of pure functionality, it makes pretty much everything look dumb. A true Smartphone. Just get rid of some annoyances (browser) and I’ll keep this thing for another 2 years at least.
Proper support for memory card. (remember the story on engadget where N8 saves a memory card corrupted by a WP7 phone.)
