Engadget has come across the press shots for the Nokia N950. This is the developer MeeGo device, sporting QWERTY keyboard. Check out the differences here.

I also like “Go create” on the box, sure Nokia, it should read “We could not finish this phone, PLEASE! Do it for us”.

they are fucking up huge if they don’t bring this to the masses …..looks to me that meego is running fine on the n950 i hope i can get my hands on this
I’m thinking a publicity stunt. Since when do you show off a development phone this much? if not this phone a very simular version will be released to the public imo.
I’m pretty sure that the N950 will be released. The “developers only” tag its just for the developers to work on the meego platform….Gosh some of you people take so many things the wrong way.

Now first of all, we call this a QWERTY device. BUT WHERE DO YOU SEE A QWERTY KEYPAD?! I know we have seen the current N950, but THESE IMAGES ARE NOT THAT KNOWN DEVICE! How do I figure so? Because it has the curved glass of the N9 in these images!! But look at live pics of the N9. NO GLASS CURVATURE THERE!
Now here’s my theory: Nokia had the N950 available months ago, but it was rumored to have been rejected by carriers because of concerns about the hinge. So it was “cancelled”. But not completely. Evidently that hardware concern was real, and since you can’t legally sell electronics with no warranty in many countries, Nokia decided to GIVE THEM AWAY TO DEVS. No use destroying that initial production sample altogether, use them as dev loaners.
In the meantime, in an effort to solve the issue, Nokia redesigned the N950 with a traditional hinge that carriers would accept. I think going with an altered tilt mechanism could’ve taken too much time, and a flat slider could be done more easily, and easily pitched to carriers. Since the N9′s displays were being done, they added a similar one to assist the swipe gestures and improve the device.
These images are obviously part of a web page design or promotional materials for the later designed commercial design. Problem is, it was done without much thought, and the devkit packaging and label were added to be used for the now available device until the newer one with the curved glass is ready in larger volumes. Notice the image of the homescreen and notifications has a mirror image view in the background, not very pro work. We’re seeing incomplete, preliminary mockups, not full press shots.
Just a theory, but pretty plausible…
No offense, but your “theory” is so wrong.
Nokia would never make a device with a hinge problem. And yes, this was the device that Nokia WAS going to release to the public. But after the Microsoft deal, they decided to release only ONE MeeGo phone to the public, and that was of course the N9.(For obvious reasons). The N950 is the RM-680, which had N9 branding when it was leaked way back then.
And the “mirror image” was there on purpose. Since when are reflections perfectly aligned to the phone?

Remember this? Well the hinge is exactly the same as the Devs device. And notice the N9 logo
Its sad that they only improved on it with the software. Newer hardware would have been great. Dual core anyone?
Like the form factor. Dislike the iPhone/WebOS like software. Can’t anybody make a decent QWERTY phone out there?
i just want this Qt DevKit very soon and start populating the AppUp !
Yes I know, MeeGO has almost no ecosystem at the moment, but remember it’s a new and promising system, with not only Nokia behind but tens of other manufacturers… And the AppUp WILL grow since many devs love Qt4 and I think MeeGO has the same chance as WP7 to grow quiclky and gain 3rd place on the market. but obviously, it will never grow if we refuse to give it a chance by just accepting trolls and Elop’s words… Remember MeeGo is not Symbian and is not Nokia, and is not dead, because it’s even not really born yet (just wait N9 is out and ready to buy)… I really don’t see why we couldn’t give a chance to MeeGo to sucess, because in today’s state, N9 is more finished than all WP7 phones outta there. And even if Mango is coming November to fix major problems, we all know that Microsoft has never known how to really fix a software (jsut look at Windows…) so yes they can fix it a lot but it will always remains heavy and buggy : look at N9 hardware and how OS is speedy ! WP7 needs dual core and all to run descentely… Just like PC using WIndows, half of your computer power is used to make the system run, so only half remains for you apps…. And don’t tell me MeeGo is like WebOS, webOS has never grown because of lack of handsets, but since HP bought Palm and did enhance the software, we will soon see many devices using it…
