Video: Nokia Maps on S40 Nokia C2-03
CJ of zomgitscj.com has got a demo of Maps running on the new S40 handset, the dual-sim Nokia C2-03.
This is pretty significant – pushing navigation and social location based services to users of ‘lower-end’, aka more affordable handsets.
It looks pretty smooth. Unfortunately what we hear is that there aren’t voice locations – there isn’t even GPS (which would push prices up. Hey, iPhone dealt with that).Main use feature they say is being able to search for places (of which you can have directed instructions how to get there).
Instead of having to use GPS or data for positioning, they use SMS for triangulating your location – a good option for those without data plans.
Maps for S40 is due for future S40 devices.

price wise this looks brilliant value. hopefully
they can put a dent in the kirf market.
If they can bring a solid ecosystem to these lower priced devices (and GPS/Qt enabled devices for this price range will eventually arrive), they can really fend off or even advance on the growing Chinese and Indian competition they currently face.
It’s only on this phone that there is no GPS in the hardware and thus no voice navigation or drive. There is nothing here to say it won’t happen on other devices and I’d be very surprised if it didn’t. The important thing here is Maps is on S40. GPS etc is a minor addition to that. And actually I think this is really encouraging and speaks very well for the future of Maps that they deliberately chose to put it on a phone that does not have GPS! Meaning everyone can use Maps.
I’ve followed Location services for years and never heard of SMS being used to determine location, I think this is just the delivery mechanism for the position, not the method of determining it.
Combine this with Touch and going forward Qt also and you have something that is a low end smartphone. Nice
If i remember correctly from the presentation is that the phone uses cell tower trriangulation for the positioning for location and it lets you send your location as sms that can be shown on another phone.
Hi
Both are correct. Maps uses cell triangulation to determine your position. It uses the phone’s data connection as bearer for this.
In India, users could also choose premium SMS as a bearer, instead of data to get their position and see it on the map screen.
Once you have gotten your position, you can share it with anyone using a simple SMS. This sends the address of the place, contact details (if available) and a link to a map image to the recipient. The recipient can click on the link to open a map image in the browser – Maps can help you invite friends to come meet you.
You can also search for a place offline and share details about it with friends using an SMS.
this mobile is very worst mobile. it make more problem..
Don’t buy this mobile.
Because,maps not load,contacts not load,certificate error,
Its really a bloody phone, every time sim 1 inserted or sim 2. Error phone. Even Nokia X2 01 can watch video from youtube this bloody phone cannot. Very bad phone no use. If we use the gprs in 1 sim the other will be out of coverage. Dont buy this and dont get cheated.
