Video: YouTube in Browser on MeeGo-Harmattan Nokia N950

| July 23, 2011 | 57 Replies

So, one of the things the current browser on the MeeGo-Harmattan will not do is flash. You can get it via FireFox/Fennec I guess.  But how would videos work, such as those on YouTube?

Well, the video player from the phone could open it up, like on many platforms now.  I wonder how it works on HTML5 embedded videos.

It would be interesting to know if this would work via Embed flash. Would it know to open it this way or just have blank spaces?

This makes the symbian browser seem from the 80s. Release the darn thing already :(

  2. Creip says:

What’s the resolution on those videos? Now please tell me its well above 240p or I will have to continue thinking the N9 browser is a step back from MicroB.

    • Dhruv Bhutani says:

Hey… thats my video over there :) You can click the HQ button when on the youtube site on the N950 browser and shift to HQ mode. I think that takes it to 480p which is plenty enough for a cellphone.

  3. hopenot says:

n9 os is ready in my eyes.
    release it now!

  4. Strongman333 says:

The most thing I want in a phone is good browser with flash support. N900 was a killer in its old days. I wonder why they put off flash support in N9 stock browser.

  5. Cod3rror says:

Looks nice, however why don’t these reviewers ever show stuff like rewinding when they play videos. Does MeeGo have scrubbing feature like iOS? That really helps when rewinding.

Also the player lacked FF and RW buttons and a HD/SD switch button.

Still it’s quite a step up from Symbian.

    • Dhruv Bhutani says:

There is a HQ switch under the video. The video player has bugs f.e you can see that the video timecode is shown at 30 min for every video. But this is early code so yea…

let me know what you want to see and i’ll put up a video. This wasn’t even a “review” video.. a friend asked me on Twitter and i made this.

      • Yemi says:

Hi what’s up? A couple of things to ask you are:
        1. Does it have the face down silent feature like N900 ie you silent a call by facing the phone screen down. This has saved me several times in meetings.
        2. Can you sync the calendar with outlook or Gcal, make changes to one calendar entry on the outlook and resync the phone. Does this create multiple entries of the same event?
        3. Please check if the phone shares it’s location with other devices while in tethering mode.
        4. Does the alarm clock work even when the phone is off? This was a feature i accidentally discovered on my N900?

That’s it for now. Thanks in advance.

i want to know if there is multi touch support in the keyboard ? like on the iphone

          • RsgGgdgjh says:

            As far as I know,

Nokia has not yet done this to it’s keyboard!

They are very happy with non multitouch keyboard

          • Jeff says:

if you’re referring to swype yes that’s implemented for the keyb.

          • Jeff says:

            Video of Swype…
            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOI5g129rtM&feature=player_embedded

Some better examples of multi-touch + keyb (not just Swype) were posted in the “N9: it’s finally here” thread @ talk.maemo.org IIRC

          • Deep Space Bar says:

multi touch keyboard is useless …….everybody types simultaneously so there is no point since it’s natural to hit one key at a time and that’s why nokia made their keyoboard with no multi touch cause it doens’t make sense force someone to do something unnatural

            • Jeff says:

But it does support it, IIRC.
              See my post above…
Stuff like swype is certainly very useful.

            • actually, multitouch on an OSK is crucial, since you usually allow a finger to linger before htting the next key at fast typing speeds. Its a help, believe me.

            • Jay Montano says:

              Agreed.

Multitouch keyboard is ESSENTIAL. That’s why we can always type blazing fast on old real T9 as you can type so fast one thumb might still be on one key whilst another is pressed. Same with real QWERTY.

If you don’t have multitouch, such speed typing prevents a new character being recognized.

It’s an odd hindrance on Nokia keyboards.
This is less of a need if the input method is swype.

              • anonymous says:

For what it’s worth, n950 has multitouch on vkbd, so the same should apply on n9. Just tried it by pressing one key, holding it and pressing another.

            • guest says:

WTF??? Of course you press the next key when the previous is still pressed when typing fast with two fingers. No multitouch causes lots of mistyping.

        • Jeff says:

You’re prolly more likely to get a clearer answer to all of those things in the meego/mameo forums.
N950 devs aren’t running the latest OS build used by the N9.

          (1) I vaguely recall this being a yes
          (2) I believe there’s various forms of outlook/exchange/gcal compatibility.
Not my area of interest, but I recall it being answered in one of the large meego threads.
          (3) no idea on this
          (4) I think this was highlighted at the Nokia connections event in Singapore on 21/06. Maybe watch the vid?

      • N9 potential buyer says:

Can you show skype sms, skype im and skypeout on n950?

        And xterminal, file manager, etc.

        • Jeff says:

Don’t think there is a file manager, could be wrong though.
Think there’s plans to have one added though.
          Via 3rd parties or something…

      • Cod3rror says:

Can you show us scrubbing please?

    • Jeff says:

The OS builds on all these n950 vids are actually quite ancient.
Nokia’s not giving them access to the most bleeding edge ones.
It’s not necessary for the dev work they’re supposed to be doing.

    • @UGN999 says:

You DO love Nokia (fanboy), don’t you? You just act like a troll in every post to keep yourself entertained.

  6. shashank says:

how come its having an engadget app?

  7. Rock says:

    Lol Epic Boxxy video :P

    - Quite like the transition from portrait to landscape.

  8. Alboooz says:

N9? yeak no thanks…that’s mobile view on youtube and not the desktop…and that’s not on browser but other apps dedicated only to youtube!
    I’ll keep my Symbian…i don’t want that N9 plastic sh*t!

    • Jeff says:

      Wot?

The browser has functionality whereby you can turn sites into “apps”.
But you’re not obligated to use it…

The browser is better than anything on symbian.
Symbian Anna may be comparable, but the N9 will be updated for longer.

    • Peter says:

You are a madman if you prefer Symbian over N9. Sent from my E7.

  9. N9 potential buyer says:

So glad the n9 has the wow ui, i cant wait to see more meego phone from other manufacturers

i dont mind a high end phone without camera! As long as it is meego plus wow ui
    plus active community!

  10. Rudeboi says:

This is fine to see but irrelevant at the same time being that this is shown on a phone that won’t be release to the public. I agree with some about going with HTML 5 instead of flash. I personally think HTML 5 is so much better and great on the battery.

    • Jeff says:

It’s also not representative of how featureful or stable harmattan is internally atm.

      Dev’s were given a fairly old build…
As it’s not necessary to have the latest/greatest build, for the work they’re meant to be doing on the n950′s.
