Did you use Ovi Calendar? Apparently Web Based access is now disappearing. Some folks have tweeted us about this and there was an official blog post yesterday that makes it all the more real.

http://blog.ovi.com/2011/08/02/web-based-access-to-ovi-calendar-is-going-away-mobile-access-continues/

Sad day for users of this service. I unfortunately was not one of them as I could never get the thing to work. I never did enjoy the fruits of Ovi Sync. The calendar itself was pretty decent looking, with to do views and multiple calendar views. The only issue I had with it was sync failure. Either failing to sync or wiping contents from my phone when syncing.

The service will be discontinued on 31st August, 2011. Content on your phone will remain and apparently you can still sync and backup, but you will NOT be able to use the calendar at Ovi.com. It’s not moving to a Nokia branded service, it is just being discontinued.

After the date, Ovi suggests exporting your calendar to a computer, or export to Windows Live, Google or Yahoo. Hmm, I never did get my google account to sync with my Symbian phones. Even after following tutorials, setting up MfE, there was no sync. Really, in ‘today’s age’, all a user should have to do is log in and bam: there’s your email, contacts and calendar on your phone and they would all sync happily with each other whenever you update one source. Some Android friends have shown me such with their google accounts. I have the same great and simple login-sync experience with Windows Phone (for Live/Gmail for calendar and contacts).

Do you care that Ovi Calendar is going away? Did you even use Ovi Calendar?

Cheers Peter.
