Nokia C3-01 Gold Edition. 18 carat gold S40 touch and type with 1GHz processor.

| August 23, 2011 | 65 Replies

The last thing you’d associate with the Nokia C3-01 is luxury. Well, no more. Nokia has dipped it in 18 carat gold. No kidding. Well, plated anyway.

Why? I don’t know. Maybe they had some gold left over from the Oro project.

This is supposedly for Eastern European and Middle Eastern markets. One thing it has sneaked on though is a 1GHz processor. Yes, for S40 as previously rumoured.

Price? 220 Euros.

Cheers D_Gui for the tip!

I hope everyone is noting the significance of this week for Nokia, yes – from about last Wed through to about this Wed.

For too long we’ve heard people say “Anna? Not coming til next year!”, “Belle? Lucky if you see it by 2016!”, “1 GHz processors for S40? What a joke!”, “30fps and continuous autofocus for the N8? Hack it, or you’re out of luck, Nokia will NEVER deliver”

and then people saying “That’s it, I’ve had enough, Android it is!”, or “iPhone 5, that’s what I need”.

Try having some faith people. Nokia is a FAR greater company than Apple, Google, Microsoft, RIM or all the rest. Seriously. They’ve just had bad management and a poor couple of years.

NOW, in the space of a week or so, we’ve seen:

    * Anna released, and deployed (yes yes I know it’s not in some places like the US, but most have it)
    * Belle announced tomorrow, and delivered soon
    * Massive camera update for the N8 bringing all the best features you wanted
    * 1 GHz processors for S40

It’s unbelievable that just because Nokia can’t make a good web browser in house, and their smartphone UIs were a tiny bit slow, that people believe all the fanboy bullshit from fans of competing systems.

Nokia is a GREAT engineering company.

I have no doubt Belle will be along soon, Symbian will continue to succeed for years and continue to be better than Android or iPhone, S40 will see Qt at it’s core and become by far the biggest smartphone platform in the world, and of course next year will see another great cameraphone flagship running Symbian (only Symbian makes it possible :) ).

Things are looking good. And I have to say, if anyone can make the dog that is WinPho work and sell successfully, it’s Nokia – certainly won’t be thanks to Microsoft.

    • JD! says:

It this end of S^3 platform?

      Any idead or thoughts?

      Anything coming out after Belle?

      • viipottaja says:

AFAIK, currently rwo more “feature release” updates are in the plans (and plans do often change) and of course the one after Belle is already being worked on. I would not expect as big changes as Belle is of course.

        • Ninja says:

Thanks. Where do you get your information from, out of interest? (in a general sense, not the specific source)

          • Viipottaja says:

I am lucky enough to have some people working in or closely with Nokia trust me with information every now and then, knowing I won’t reveal all of it or in too much detail. :)

    • Weirdfisher says:

Anna, or say pr2 was expected to release in january
I didnt expect the camera ui is that shitty, though the camera is great
They should have put a cortex a8 into n8

Symbian is out dated, and nowadays most people doesnt need too many features, which of those make symbian special. they only need apps. Iphone sales just reflected that.

Dont tell me appstore only has fart apps. I have both iphone and n8. The apps are just brilliant. I think symbian should be abandoned and move on to meego, which is very innovative. Im sure it can attract many users from other OSes

      • Nrde says:

On the other hand you say people don’t need features, but then you say they need apps.

So people don’t want the features built in, they want to find and install them by themselves?

        • johnsonaye says:

          +1

You made a really important point there. It’s weird how people would exchange features and capability to basic eye-candy. But then again, if that’s what they want, let ‘em have it… and the N9 sure does deliver! ;)

Nokia should do a “You don’t need an app for that!” -campaign with the N9 and Belle, aimed at the more sophisticated users among us. Let’s not forget that even now, feature-wise, nothing touches the N8 (with the large sensor camera + HDMI + USB-OTG + excellent battery life -killer combo).

Oh, and I use an iPhone btw (bought it because I love the MacBook). My gf got an N8 from her employer so I get to compare the two irl. The funny thing is, we use the iPhone for browsing and the N8 for everything else. When travelling, the N8 outlasts the iPhone by 24 hours (!), and naturally we use the N8 to take the occasional snap shots when the SLR is out of reach.. Anna made the S^3 UI quite slick and i’m hoping Belle will give the Nokia Symbian phones the look and feel they deserve.

    • Mokia says:

I dont know why but i agree with you Ninja but still cant download Anna! Bought it new without a simcard thats so lame that my phone and country i think is always soo late with updates zzzzz. By the way im from the Netherlands

    • jim says:

You must work for Nokia right?

How people can be such rabid fanboys for one company strikes me as rather odd otherwise.

They probably should be paying you for your hours of defending them on forums. Although your blatant fanboy defences probably do them more harm than good. You could try a more balanced approach in the future.

Although pleased to see you admitted they are incapable of producing the most fundamental smartphone feature – a browser. Might be hope for you yet.

And BTW things are only looking ‘good’ for nokia if WP7 is a roaring success, and even then they just become another hardware vendor. Given your views of WP7 I bet you can hardly sleep at night for fear that your beloved Nokia is on it’s way out.

  5. pchees says:

its amazing news. I guess Nokia must have bought 10′s of millions of 1 Ghz processors, got a great price, and is now putting them in to all the low-end/medium end products.

    • JD! says:

I think getting 600 MHz processors are costly nor a days than 1GHz processors!
So, it makes all sense to upgrade them.
And the best part is that even S40 / s60 phones will also become smartphones.
It would be good to see how much fight they give to WinPh :-P

    • Harangue says:

Since the 1Ghz units are all ARM11 units. A dated design that’s manufactured at a larger die size which eliminates manufacturing failure to a minimum thus keeping cost down.

The downside to using older tech is the older design itself. Because it uses a 65nm die it tends to use more energy per clock than a newer design or a similar design made on a smaller die size. However, S40 is pretty energy efficient but with a modern design clock speeds could be lower and also scaling of the clockspeed is better in newer designs therefor making S40 more energy efficient than it is with this ARM11 core.

But I think Nokia did it because of marketing, 1Ghz just tends to sell better than say 600Mhz even if the actual calculation time is the same for both processors.

  7. Razor says:

Sad that Symbian^3/anna or belle dosen’t support higher resolution like wvga, fvwga or even qhd. Hell it dosen’t even support arm7 (cortex) or even arm9 SOC architecture like android or ios does. i guess because Symbian is way too old or Nokia is too lazy to rewrite the whole os. but it’s already too late for Nokia though. I hope Microsoft’s OS WP7 does succeed for Nokia’s sake.

  8. EagleEye says:

Can I ask, if Nokia is going to make a luxury phone, why on earth are they using low end hardware with dumbphone OS?

  9. Titanium says:

Just a message to say S40 will not be only low cost phones?

With 1GHz CPU + 512MB ram you can do lots of things, why limit to the low cost only?

I see S40 becoming synonym of simpler phone, from low cost to top build construction quality but only with the essential smartphone features

Think to S40 with 12 MPixels camera + 1080p Video + 1GHz CPU + 512MB ram + Qt + SuperAMOLED CBD + touch & type + Maps + HTML5 Browser + easy Swipe UI + long battery life + quality construction materials + High quality audio – closed ecosystem – complex UI – frequent updates – unusefull apps

    • Ninja says:

Not sure about the 12Mp camera any time soon, but yes, a good camera anyway, but yes this is basically where S40 is heading.

And STILL some people (hello Google!) will try to claim only Android is a smartphone OS… smacks of desperation… :)

      • Harangue says:

The definition smartphone is pulled completely out of context. It only covered the load when it was first mentioned. For the Symbian and WinMo phones of yesteryear.

Nowadays a smartphone is one that can browse, download and install apps and send and receive mail.

The definition has become somewhat useless over the years. S40 delivers as much as Android apart from multitasking and raw computing power and a little more perhaps (not all to sure about S40 though, never really used it)

For the majority of users though it offers enough smartphone-ishness to suffice just like an Android device does. S40 just needs to offer a little more, higher res screens and thus better UI capabilities.

1GHz for S40 and yet no Anna for USA N8

    :@

    • Heborg says:

Didnt the Nokia US head tell recently that US is WP only. No more Symbian or S40 to US. Perhaps that included SW updates as well ?

      • Bosh says:

I don’t know why Nokia makes so much effort on disappointing USA customers.

The only reason I haven’t go to Android is because I can’t afford a good android camera phone to replace my N8.

I hope the See Ray will be below $500 (yes, I can dream too :P ) because otherwise it’s totally out of my budget.

        • viipottaja says:

AFAIK, Anna is coming for US variants too. in fact Anna was presumably planned as a big bang global roll out, but bugs got in the way. at least they got it out for almost all variants in the end still.

    • Slayer says:

nokia should stop everything they are doing to release anna for NAM varaiants. actually, the world might come to an end if they didn’t do so…

    • Titanium says:

      +1

also the commenting system could be improved (disqus perhaps?)

      • Harangue says:

There are some issues with disqus which kept ‘us’ ( or Jay actually) from using Disqus.

But hey, the content displayed here is the most important thing right?

That frontpage resizing is due to image proportions that are square for the frontpage but are often not like that in the post itself.

        • Ronit says:

I have a blog and have used software like wordpress & joomla before and I know it shouldn’t be too difficult to maintain the aspect ratios of the images on the front page.

Seriously guys, do spend some time on it & fix this. Those stretched images are an eyesore..

Nokia Fanboys & Girls….I’m on the horns of a dilemma!

I am due for an upgrade and i don’t know what to do!!

First off let me just i’ve been a Nokia fan all my life (even though my 2nd phone is a bb bold on payg solely for bbm, i tried to push ovi chat to friends but they weren’t interested). I had a N900 but it got water damage :’(

    My dilemma:

Like i said previously, i’m due for an upgrade and up until the N9 was announced I was dead sure that i was going to get E7 (my current Nokia is and E72) and the beauty which the N9 was revealed and i was mesmerised and was hoping to get my hands on it but now that Nokia has announced that it won’t get an official release here (UK) i’m heartbroken, so much so that i’ve been contemplating jumping ship and going android or wp7.

I don’t know if i should wait for someone to guarantee that they have the N9 in UK (i’m tired of waiting btw) or just get a E7 and be upset every time i look at it (i’m slowly getting bored of symbian too) or get galaxy s2 or something like that.

    Please help!!

p.s i know this has nothing to do with the post please forgive me

Usually one should buy based on his own necessity. Here I understand that you havent any special necessity, just money to spent. Nevertheless you want to spend them at best, so go N9:

      1) you will be different for sure
      2) you will different for better
      3) it (and maybe even you) will be at the centre of all your friends discussion
      4) girls will have a reason to approach you
      5) you will have something special and unique to show them
      6) 10 years from now when it will bean icon you could say: I had one

        3) it (and maybe even you) will be at the centre of all your friends discussion

5)Get an N9 and get laid !!!!!!! LOL

    • Ninja says:

a.) You can ask to delay your upgrade – not sure if you knew this.

b.) You can threaten to cancel with your network, ask to be put through to disconnections and then say to them, what are they willing to give you to get you to stay. Then insist on an N9 – it doesn’t matter if they officially have it or not, believe me they can get hold of it if they want to

c.) Failing everything else, find a handset you can upgrade to that has a resale value on ebay of roughly the same it would cost you to get an N9 from somewhere, then get the upgrade and sell it and buy your N9. Simple and I have done this before.
