Video Calling with Skype and WiFi Hotspot feature in Windows Phone Mango

Some interesting bits of info around that we got tweeted and tipped. Thanks all of you.

Now lets go first to a feature I’ve been looking forward to. It’s one I rely my N8 on. WiFi sharing mode, by way of JoikuSpot to share my 3G internet over WiFi. Tethering over wires is nice but this is more convenient. With Mango, this is apparently built in although it has to be enabled by the carrier.

Now with a huge boom in data consumption and inability for some networks to keep up, it is expected that this won’t be allowed, or it may be something you might have to pay for, e.g. iPhone. Some networks in the UK boast about truly unlimited data. I’m sure if that’s the case, they won’t mind tethering (e.g. ThreeUK sales guy specifically said this was OK on their network).

Next up for engadget, skype video calling for Windows Phone. Meaning front facing cameras in Windows Phone. I love how since iPhone put video calling on iPhones, front facing camera is now a feature reported and not a standard we’ve been taking for granted on Nokias. And precicely that, by taking it for granted, Nokia hasn’t done much with front facing cameras. I’ve not had much use for 3G video calling since I switched away from O2 (who used to include it in my free minutes). And Skype video still isn’t possible over Symbian. (It was nice on N900 though).

Skype video is most definitely something I’d have great use for and have been wanting on a mobile. Fingers crossed Nokia has put one in their Windows Phones. You can’t take for granted any more that FF cameras will be available on Nokias. e.g. X7, 600, 700
