GSM Arena’s Nokia 500 (p)Review

| September 16, 2011 | Comments (23)

The Nokia 500 was one of Four new Symbian phones  whose names and subsequent details were leaked heavily before announcement. Out of the four, the Nokia 500 was announced first and quietly on Nokia Conversations, being part of the “old” Symbian Anna brigade. Note, although it was not mentioned initially in the availability for Belle, Nokia has said that it too will get that much helpful update.

The 500 was a very modest, entry level smartphone, and priced accordingly at launch. GSM Arena has put it through its paces which you can read at their preview:

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_500-review-644.php

They’ve got a hands on video at page 3 and this time, lags if any are less visible (much less anyway than Nokia’s own hands on at launch)

We’re looking at a very capable phone for the budget-conscious user. With all round fast connectivity, 1GHz processor, a capacitive screen and the free drive and walk navigation, the value for money is there.

Cheers for the tip, guys.

Its a Preview, Not a Review.

  2. Anuj Karkare says:

I think all the theme effects are off.

  3. StylinRed says:

    VGA 15FPS ??? Oo

why dont they just throw a N95/n86 camera into these new cheap phones? surely the cost of the camera of those old phones are on par or cheaper than what they threw into this ?

    • Slayer says:

fps is cpu/gpu related. it has nothing to do with the camera

    • Viipottaja says:

Those modules may be already out of production and/or two bulky for it anyway.

Second, no cost is too little to cut if you are trying to put out a cheap device. It REALLY does matter down to the last cents, in particular in a device that may sell in the millions.

Third, product differentation also matters. This may give _some_ a reason to go with the 600 instead, and thus land a few more dollars in Nokia’s account.

      • Johnny Tremaine says:

So why not just release fewer devices then, say, only the 600 and 701? Or maybe just the 701?

        • N00-00 says:

Because there are people who cant afford a 6XX or 7XX but still need a decent phones for around $200 like the 500.

          • Johnny Tremaine says:

Oh, I understand, but let Huwaei and the white box manufacturers have that market.

Maybe Nokia should be going a bit higher end.

            • Viipottaja says:

Why would they let Huawei etc. have that market when Nokia has a perfectly good offering to make as well, leveraging Symbian investments and sunk costs they’ve done and would do anyway?

Nokia is trying to get back into the high end too. N9 being a good example perhaps not harware specs wise, fully, of course, but price wise yes – they must be getting very good margins at least at launch when price is high.

  4. BiboKid says:

    N9 N9 N9 N9 N9 N9 N9 N9 N9 N9 N9

    EN NAYN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. BellGo says:

“At around 150 euro pre-tax..” Where did they get this from?

    • Jesus Christ says:

This number has been thrown around since the 500 was announced, but I don’t know where it originated. Nokia’s online store in my country is selling it for € 230, which is a lot more than 150 + 23% VAT.

  6. Nitin says:

Well i said it a few days back and i am saying it again We the Symbian and Nokia Fans should not expect too much from Sybmian OS on a whole be it Anna or Belle or whatever they might call it in the future. We should stop circling around Symbian an OS which is day by day finding it hard to stand its ground against the competetion. I am not saying Android,IOS are perfect, but they are far more User friendly and Efficient,be it browsing, syncing mails and updates etc These OS’s are constantly updating and apgrading their UI look at Android its gone from 1.6 to honeycomb is just over a year ..Samsung, HTC and SE have made a fantastic comeback and has covered a whole lot of ground that i thought is commendable.

I belive for once Nokia is going in the Right direction by chossing Windows OS, if they focus and keep up thier promises they could still make a comeback …..I have not lost my faith in Nokia but i will not buy another nokia with any graded or upgraded version of Symbain OS.

Judging from the content of your post, I think you meant to say “YOU the Symbian and Nokia Fans should not expect etc etc”.

      You are transparent.

  7. Smriti says:

5MP camera but no flash.. I am disappointed with the processing speed of the phone. Though, they have given 1GHz processor but only 256MB RAM and this slows down the speed of the phone. Overall, it’s a nice device. What else could you expect from a below 10k smartphone. Even I have written a review of Nokia 500. Here’s the link, in case you want to explore the phone further – http://cellphoneswatch.blogspot.com/2011/10/nokia-500-review.html
