Nokia 600 cancelled?

| November 1, 2011 | 37 Replies

Word is going around the blogosphere and Twitter that Nokia might have cancelled the 600. You’ll probably remember it as the previously rumoured Cindy device running Belle that was first noticed on a sheet along with the 500, 700 and 701. It appears though that the 600 won’t be launching any time soon or maybe won’t even launch at all.

One of the first mentions I read about a possible cancellation of the 600 came from DGui. It seemed odd that Nokia would cancel a device that already launched officially, as far as I know that never happened before. Further investigation learns that official youtube video’s of the 600 are either very hard or nowhere to be found and Nokia’s developer website doesn’t seem to have the 600 listed anymore either.

So what happened? We can only guess, maybe it has been pushed back to a later date, maybe there were difficulties with the manufacturing process, maybe there were some last minute faults that came to light or Nokia just pulled the 600 because they felt that the available line up (500/603/700/701) already fills the 600′s slot.

Whatever is the reason, everything indicates that it has been pulled. Should you be bummed by this news? Probably not, the 700 is nearly identical to the 600 in terms of specs. Maybe the 600 would have been cheaper, but I doubt it would be considering the spec similarity.

  1. Oops……Nokia 600 Cancelled? | SymbianTweet | November 2, 2011
  1. dcastrog says:

eldar posted on his twitter account that it was because stores didnt bought the enough stock to make it profitable for nokia. Only a rumour by eldar tho

    • stylinred says:

      that doesnt make much sense

nokia could put these in 7-11s (convenience stores) and sold them as prepaid devices for the price point of the 600 it would have fit

    • Waseem says:

according to me… i think they cancelled it because they claimed that this is the loudest smartphone of Nokia to date, and after launching it officially may be they found that its not actually loudest smartphone of Nokia to date… and may be its true… that is just only my guess and i am confident :)

  2. Eldar_is_a_fat_lying_bastard says:

    >2011
    >people still listening to Eldar

I seriously hope you don’t do this!

    • Svenkka says:

+1 If we could believe in anything Eldar says, N9 would already have ceased to exist in the stores as all 92k units have been sold out long time ago.

So much for the credibility of Eldar the Samsung’s Goat.

  3. Rock says:

    Good.

They probably wouldn’t have sold much anyway..

  4. Michael Faro-Tusino says:

Maybe need to have a “New” device to launch Q1/Q2 2012 with “Cindy” or whatever they choose.

It’s the only Belle device, so far, that doesn’t look too similar to WP or existing S^3 handsets. (eg C7 and 701, 603 and Lumia 710).

Let’s hope it is the first Symbian C_____ device. Excited to see how they make Belle better :)

    • Dinesh Manne says:

I think its more to do with distribution channels, they are concentrating more on the windows phone getting it to the market than fill fated 600. Honestly i don’t mind they scrapped the phone as 700 and 701 will serve the purpose.

My wish is they would bring out an NOKIA N9 looking Symbian belle device with 1gh dual core 1gb ram and 16mp camera with high resolution display. Hope they are cooking something in NOKIA similar spec device for Symabian Belle or Clara device.

      • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

That would be nice to see N9 design on Symbian C_____ with sweet specs. 1.4 ghz dual core would be nice :p otherwise those specs you mentioned are good

  5. eze says:

announce a phone and then cancel it few weeks later.
just shows you how directionless nokia leadership is SMH.
the only direction i am going is towards the WHITE N9 :)

    • Cocco Bill says:

The leadership was and still is the problem in Nokia. And making competent executives like Rich Green leave Nokia isn’t going to make leadership any better, but worse.

You know that this whole WP7 deal and the canceling of MeeGo came as a total surprise to people inside Nokia. Everyone was waiting Nokia to adopt Android as a third OS and MeeGo to continue as the primary high end OS. Especially the N9/MeeGo team was treated really bad, stabbed in the back if you will, by Elop. No wonder a lot of good people left the company in disgust, including Rich Green.

The one thing that Nokia should have fixed, bad leadership, they didn’t. Elop is exactly the kind of crappy executive that Nokia already had in house doing bad decisions. The kind of people that Nokia should have gotten rid of.

  6. reptile says:

I suspected as much months ago, when they mysteriously removed the 600 ad off their youtube account.

  7. Mario says:

I don’t know about you guys, but since I had to make an (not sucessful) effort to remember exactly which device the 600 was, I think it was a good cut.

    Anonymous handset FTL.

  8. Taigatrommel says:

“Maybe the 600 would have been cheaper, but I doubt it would be considering the spec similarity.”

The 600 was announced at 180,- Euro before taxes, the 700 was announced with 270,- Euro before taxes. So there is quite a price gap between these two. I think the 600 might’ve been an interesting Nokia 5800 Xpress Music replacement in terms of price and size. While the 603 is only slightly more expensive with an announced pricetag of 200,- Euro before taxes, this device is also slightly larger and heavier than the 600.

IMO it is pretty strange what Nokia is doing with this phone. First announcing it officially in Hong Kong, then rather silently announcing the 603 without any special event. Now they’ve pulled most information or evidence of the 600.

You can still get all the information from the Nokia Conversations page:
    http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/08/24/launch-nokia-600-loud-and-proud/
There is also a discussion going on in the comments….

  9. Chen Zhe says:

600 has a unique internal FM antenna

  10. Viipottaja says:

Well, let first wait for an official word from Nokia on this. But if they have, hardly a major loss given that the 603 seems like a better device for only Euro 20 more.

    • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

Replaced the 600 on the officiall Belle page with 603

      http://europe.nokia.com/symbian-belle

    • Rebbe says:

I think Nokia 600 got replaced by 603 because the 603 is nearly as loud as the nokia 600 and the screen is bigger and brighter on the 603. So whats the selling points left for the 600? A bit cheaper with an internal fm transmitter.. I think nokia did the right thing. The only bad thing is that this phone didn’t have a lunch event….

I hope they make a nokia express music wp phone because i want to find an replacement for my Nokia 5800, a phone that have served me well…

  11. meong says:

why not the nokia 700 same hadware except amoled screen and over price ,
    +nokia 700 has ugly design

  12. knm says:

Have been to nokia store in Bangalore.I could see 600 in three colours on display. They said it is coming soon.Soat least it is headed to India.

  13. migo says:

Why couldn’t they cancel the 500 instead?

  14. 352x416 says:

Maybe someone at Nokia noticed how many touchscreen only phones they currently had on the market. Hopefully Nokia will release some classic button/keypad Symbian phones soon.

  15. Average Joe says:

IIRC the they told the 600 wasn’t heading to western markets, even when they announced it. So it was kind of a strange model since the beginning.

  16. Kiran says:

    Here is the official confirmation
    http://www.facebook.com/nokia/posts/10150338727597397
“after careful consideration, we have decided not to ship the Nokia 600″

“Hi guys, I’m sorry to hear of your disappointment. We continuously refine our portfolio to bring you the best possible mobile phones. Also, the Nokia 600 had not yet begun shipping and you can already purchase the Nokia 701, Nokia 700 & Nokia 603, all running Symbian Belle :)

    http://www.developer.nokia.com/Community/Discussion/showthread.php?230102-Is-Nokia-600-cancelled-will-it-be-available-for-India

“Nokia is refining it’s product portfolio from time to time and as a result the Nokia 600 pages have been removed now. So you should look at Nokia 603/700/701 instead. “

  17. ceefive says:

Am I the only one who maybe wanted to buy it?

“Probably not, the 700 is nearly identical to the 600 in terms of specs.”
It isn’t at all. 600 has integrated FM antenna, much better and louder loudspeaker, and also has a FM-Transmitter. Which phone does have these three features combined?

  18. dsmobile says:

    Nokia 600 180euro
    Nokia 603 200euro

There is clear reason why 600 is gone. There is no point to waist time to make almost same device that end up to be same price in retails.

That is one and only reason and right one from Nokia.

You can also see Nokia C6-01 that is same price as Nokia 600 but with better screen and will get Symbian Belle update. Only thing C6-01 is missing is NFC and some Mhz that does not really matter.

    • ceefive says:

NFC isn’t the only thing missing in C6-01.

  19. totesilva says:

I think Nokia 500, 600 and 700 are really too similar. But I would prefer Nokia 600 instead Nokia 500.

  20. bong says:

600 is still the best i know for its features, very loud speaker,fm internal antenae, and fm trnsmitter that lacks to any phone.so bring it back the king of sound to be
