Nokia Confirms N8 successor for next year?

| November 15, 2011 | 58 Replies

A few of you guys are sending in this tip posted up by GSM Arena where by Nokia are supposedly confirming the existance of the upcoming Nokia N8 successor. If you’ve missed the rumours, check out the last post which also details what we’ve been following so far:

I can’t watch the whole video as I’m in the library with no headphones, but I cranked it up to the point where he said something along the lines of the N8 camera being fantastic, but you should expect something better next year. Well, that’s not really something that should surprise us but given that NOTHING came this year, when it comes to Nokia, we should never take progression for granted.

Was there anything else worth mentioning from the video?

In terms of what we are expecting;

  • Possibly higher res screen
  • Bigger sensor
  • More MP (not important but good for marketing)
  • optical zoom
  • 1080p

If it’s 1080p then it must be dual core too

    • Sun Down says:

As much as I welcome a dual-core CPU, I’m getting sick, repeat: I’m gettting sick of this specs fettish. I just want a phone the works smoothly and very durable with fine attention put into the details and a few neat extras that just makes the experience much, much better. In other words, why can’t people think organically instead of mechanically? I blame Android for that. No pun intended.

      • FireDragon says:

No matter how much you/we cry over specs, this number game is not going to be slow down at any time sooner unless they will run out of numbers and hit the blocks. And then they will find something else to play with, and I am hoping it be a battery numbers.

      • Edmund says:

battery is really the thing that counts now i believe. the GHz war is getting ridiculous..
haha but by your rant, N9 or the Lumia would fit the bill pretty well.. ;)

      • MoritzJT says:

Actually Symbian is one of the few multicore enabled architectures that really would profit in battery life and power from a cual core CPU/GPU combo.

Android does that half way – Not sure about iOS apps.

By the time this device is available, all of the Symbian Framework will support Multithreading. Qt already does if you have it running on a multicore.

        Cheers

    • Harangue says:

Nope it doesn’t need to be, the Broadcom 2763 can do 1080p. If it runs on Symbian that will most likely be the set up.

If it were to run WP it most likely will use a MSM8660 type Qualcomm unit that supports 1080p as well. or atleast something that uses the Adreno 220.

    • Banderpop says:

If it’s 1080p then it needs a better GPU or co-processor.

A dual-core ARM CPU alone won’t be capable of 1080p encoding.

    • VV says:

It better be dual core.No matter what some people say about this, smartphones need powerful cpus, they need good specs.Look at Nokia…they ALWAYS come out with underpowered devices…the end result ? LAAAAGGG ! and regarding this N8 successor – I just hope it doesn’t have the same purple screen and sensor problems that the N8 has.A powerful Carl Zeiss camera with Xenon is the only way that I’ll ever touch a Windows Phone.

      • Chris says:

I don’t care how many cores it has. I think it’s important that the phone runs smooth yet not being over-power.

My N8 suffers from being unresponsive, purple screen, and a stucked ND filter (I can get it to open up by knocking the phone if it’s stuck closed, but no luck if it’s stuck open and I’ll get overexposed image).

        What I expect (dealbreaker otherwise):
        - Wifi tethering (my N8 is my modem, have great telco here.. relatively..)
        - Gravity (or alternative that’s just as good if not better)
        - Nokia maps
        - AF camera, for shooting documents
        - Amoled screen (habit of leaving screen on when using joikuspot now, battery issues)
        - Able to work without a PC (Sometime I go around with just an android tablet and N8, complementing each other)

        What I can give up:
        - Metal construction
        - memory card slot (as long as it comes with 32gb or more storage).

  2. Mendax says:

Hopefully it’s not running Symbian but some variant of Maemo/Harmattan.

    • Jay Montano says:

      Swipe :)

      • karam says:

swipe is innovative and genius, but from n900 owner perspective, it’s too minimalistic compared to maemo 5 hildon desktop. n900 had better visual multitasking, even youtube videos played in the backgroud. we had live widgets, contacts, one-touch tools (like that IP address which connects to wifi with one tap from home screen)

      • wes? says:

N8 successor with Swipe UI –> direct buy, no matter if Symbian or MeeGo/Maemo in the background…

    • Nrde says:

Symbian is fine if they keep improving it and/or taking some harmattan UI features to it. What matters more is that both Harmattan & Symbian keep getting SW support from 3rd parties.

      • FireDragon says:

Yes it is fine. As OS the only draw back Symbian had was its development process which is very much cover after QT. The second is/was look of its UI and the third most important of the user experience with it, which also improved but as for Anna it still need a few things to work out which I need to see if Belle carries or fixed it.

        • krustylicious says:

AS fireDragon has already said, Symbian’s main downfall was the acient dev side of it.

Nearly every time a new device was done it was in families as it required a new build of symbian.

With QT you can freeze alot of those issues away.

Symbian needs rebuilding in some parts to resolve the platform dependance it currently has.

    • RVM says:

Actually the best solution would be Symbian with new C_ update – maybe with Swipe GUI implemented somehow…

    • reptile says:

I’d like if if they made multiple versions of it. Symbian for those that like homescreen widgets and Harmattan for people that like simplicity.

  3. Anjanu Sonkar says:

    plus
    a bigger 4″ CBD
1.4 GHz CPU if not Dual Core
rest I think should be common sense

    Plus
put MeeGo inside if not Symbian… :P
but dont put Windows Phone inside

  4. wes? says:

    with MeeGo/Maemo/Meltemi –> 100% buy
with Symbian –> not so sure
    with WinPh7 –> even less sure…

Xenon + LED would be awesome…

  5. Symbian 4 life says:

I hope there’s also a Nokia E5/E6 successor next year with really long battery life!

  6. Anjanu Sonkar says:

that questioning guy in the video is an Apple snitch…trying to get the Nokia strategy and get it done first and in better way at Apple(he was holding an iPhone 4 :P )

  7. can't be helped says:

nokia can eaily earn money with meego/symbian phones with better spec

    • FireDragon says:

True. Only if they start looking things this way too. :) hey have to make it look good for the consumers first though, which now they are doing.

  8. Bhairav says:

Take this with a grain of salt – but I’ve heard of a 48MP camera deep within Nokia labs, with 10X optical zoom. Qualcomm are still trying to come up with a chipset to support this. Again, this comes from a first-hand source – a Nokia employee in South Asia.

    • Keizka says:

Surely has been jesting? 48, really?

    • nonikhanna says:

WOW JUST IMAGINE THAT!!! If it’s macro shots are excellent it could possible be another microscope XD

    • Mapantz says:

      48MP eh? lol
Last time i read anything about a camera having that many pixels, it was a 50MP hasselblad, and cost a mere $40,000.

      • stylinred says:

it would make sense for the nokia R&D to have Hassleblads, Mamiyas, Siars, etc etc etc cameras disassembled in their office for Long-Term planning etc and figuring out how to compact high-mpx/sensors into small form factors

    • Viipottaja says:

Well, at least in the past most things “deep within Nokia labs” never made it to the market (part of what some would argue inefficient R&D in Nokia in the past) so while that may be true, the practical implementation of it may never happen or may take many years to come. :)

ps. And yes, I would hope they focus the camere efforts on other things than just the MP count.

    • Sa says:

He’s just teasing and you guys all fall for it!
If he’d said 20mpx then yeah but 48? Seriously?!

    • zymo says:

I have heard that they will use a liquid/fluid lens for the optical zoom. Samsung has already filled a patent on this.

    • wes? says:

http://www.symbianlounge.com/at/?p=5305 mentiones a 48MP camera as well. If true it has to be something totally different than recent cameras and phones. Anything “usual” does not make sense with that many pixels…

  9. aleci says:

Nokia should remember that only its real fans and enthusiasts are the one who’s gonna be interested in this phone and would only be able to use it! So definitely not WP OS!
3.7-3.9 should be the perfect size of the screen! and higher resolution pls!!!
But I’m seriously not enthusiastic about this anymore. I just want to wait for SONY to release an Android cybershot. Nokia has pretty much become disappointment and they’re not that much cool too lately.

  10. schwermetall says:

Sorry guys, but please stoping with this nonsense like:
    - 10x zoom
    - 48 MP
    - …
I’m sorry to write it but you don’t have any clue about fotografic-technology.

Or no… maybe the next N8 is a DSLR with an GSM module ;-)

  11. Cod3rror says:

It’s not going to use that ancient relict Symbian right?

Canon and Nikon have better software than Symbian on their DSLRs.

If it’s Android and it has a design like the N9 it’ll be a huge success, if it’s Symbian it’ll be a failure.

  12. vPuik says:

They really should make a WP version for the US market.

  13. Doffen says:

Hopefully Nokia will ditch the arm 11 processor but I am not to optimistic…

  14. Jonas says:

1080p recording, 720p screen, same or bigger sensor + meego = ill get a loan if i have to to get it !! :D

  15. jot3000 says:

ok here is my interpretation of what the n8 successor should be:a modified version of the n9 body, mini usb, hdmi and headphone pocket at the top,get rid of the lock slide and put power button there.keep the sim card/memory card set up as it is on the n8.led light for video where the speaker is on the n8.usb otg,fm transmitter, nfc obviously.3.7 to 4 inch screen, nothing bigger with higher res.1.4ghz single core processor,1gb ram with gpu.all of this running on symbian belle with a basic swipe overlay:swipe up from homescreen for apps then across for multitask.if Nokia bring out something like this they’ve got my money!your thoughts?

  16. Gen says:

Well there are some really good camera phone in Japan already.take Panasonic Lumix phone for instance. Its got a 13MP Lumix sensor (no Leica lens though) capable of doing 1080 video.

  17. James Scott says:

I keep reading about the N8 successor having “Optical Zoom”, is this even possible on a cell phone? Has anyone ever seen a cell phone with optical zoom that did not have a huge lens sticking out the back?

    • Jay Montano says:

Not a cell phone but I remember seeing some old sony cameras with a optical zoom on a body that didn’t change size. (It was internal changes, though it wass thicker now than your average smartphone it was pretty slim in those days).

The N93 long barrel type could work. The optical zoom could be placed along the width of the phone therefore not making a difference to thickness.

Otherwise, we may still have a portion that juts out optical zoom. Unless nokia has sufficiently minimised the optical zoom mechanics.
