Windows Phone Messaging Hub Crippled by SMS Bug

Careful! there’s a evil text message making it’s rounds on Windows Phones (sadly including Nokia WPs) which contains a ‘certain text’, once you open this message it will automatically restart your phone, upon reboot the Messaging Hub is completely locked up, making it near impossible to do anything.

In the video demo below by WinRumor Editor Tom Warr, he en also stated that the bug was in the OS itself and not device specific, meaning it can potentially happen in any Windows Phone device:

“The attack is not device specific and appears to be an issue with the way the Windows Phone messaging hub handles messages”

The bug can also be triggered via incoming Facebook messages to the hub, and can even be caused if a friend pinned to a live tile posts that specific text as a tweet or status can also lock up the phone (Quickly removing the persons live tile upon startup can bypass that specific lock-up).

Microsofts only reply was:

“Microsoft is investigating a reported Windows Phone messaging issue and will share more soon.”

The timing couldn’t be worse considering that Microsoft has launched a campaign aimed at drawing people who’ve had malware attacks on their Android phones to take up WP instead, enticing them with free phones and other delicious offers.
