#N9Hacks: Volume rocker as Shutter Button (App)

| January 13, 2012 | Comments (24)

I came across some chatter about this last night on IRC, but was waiting to post it until it was confirmed. Thomas Perl (aka thp ) has made a “quick and dirty” camera hack, that allows you to use the Volume up key as a dedicated camera shutter button. Not much to explain about it, but here is a video.

I went to the beach, left it in my bag, came back a few hours later, screen was wrecked. Bottom half doesn’t work, top half temperamental. I know it is screen, as ssh to device and using vnc, shows full image. So I know it is screen.

What to do? Don’t put your phone in a black bag, sitting in the sun, oh a 30+ degree day. I estimate bag temps was about 40+, and i don’t think that is good. Plus, phone was in a case, so it was probably even hotter :/

… and yet I’m freezing my ass off here at -4°C *rant*

Poor N9… It remained hot until its last moment under the sun…

            • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

It did. Oh well, hopefully will get it replaced, so many good hacks that have come out, plus I need to test my own ;) Will keep you guys updated :)

I don’t think your warranty will cover that, but if I remember correctly there was a site with original N9 spare parts and the display assembly (glass + polarizer + cap. touchscreen layer + AMOLED screen) was in the neighborhood of 150€ – however now I can only find this: http://tinyurl.com/7gtngnz for $126, but it seems suspicious (AMOLED LCD?)…

Anyway, good luck with fixing it :)

                • buzzinga / jody says:

i read somewhere that it lacks a ribbon, n9 and lumia screen has 2 attached ribbons only that the one being sold only has one ribbon, so it cant be used IRC

          • buzzinga / jody says:

that’s just sad, friday the 13th for you. n9 needs all the love hackers give. so you have to have it fixed ;)

          • atom says:

That’s rough. Hopefully you can use some MNB money to get a new one, especially with the recent price drops. I like these posts a lot.

BTW, Did you ever show how to undo the hide icons hack?

            • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

It was in a comment on the post how to hide. Just remove the full stop ( . ) from the beginning of the file name :)

  4. Pr@$h@nt says:

    Sad ur n9 gone dead.

  5. vihru says:

how about that focus? its not blue that screen?

  6. LINES says:

I thought that volume button is for zoom out purpose.

  7. LINES says:

Nokia N9 is still the best! :)

  9. DesR85 says:

This is good if I am left-handed, but since I’m not, I’d rather use the on-screen camera button than that if I have an N9.

Still, not a bad hack if you ask me. :)
