Nokia Carla, Mid-March for Nokia 603/700/701? And some info on Belle (February release)

Remember we asked you before what was Symbian C before it was more widely known to be Carla? It's still not official but it's pretty much on the same level or recognition as Belle before that was launched. The more eagle eyed of you had noticed that the name was there all along in the image ;p

ICEman tipped some info below such as Nokia Suite showing a banner for the Belle update, some app incompatibility and it will definitely be for february. I looked up ICEmans past comments and he seems to have been commenting precisely on certain information way before anything was official. Such as the exact screensize and form factor of the Nokia E6 in January before we even really knew anything about it. I’m not sure where they’re from but they’re very specific.

Most interesting is that the Nokia 603/700/701 will get Carla in mid March 2012. He suspects it may have Office/Skype. He notes that Belle v111.030.0609 was available for the newer models in December but the older ones for February.

About Symbian Belle update:
- only via Nokia Suite 3.3 (and later versions), will be displaying huge banner for Belle update
- no FOTA update
- device will be cleaned (e.g. you’ll lose all your settings, some apps), personal data (sms, contacts, etc.) will be backuped and restored, mass memory and memory card completely untouched
- “some apps won’t work with Belle” – guess no Skype release on the same day
- update possible both from Anna and S^3
- will be there in February
- SW version is 111.030.0609, same as leaked. Not sure if it will be renamed to “Nokia Belle”

On Nokia Carla, only info is that current-gen Symbian devices (603/700/701) will probably get it mid-march 2012. No word on N8/C7/.., could be at once, could be a month or two later (see december for 111.030.0609 for newer devices in December and only February for older ones). No changelog as of now, my feeling is that Carla will give us Skype & MS Office

Wait what wasn’t the Microsoft products supposed to appear on Belle.

Wasn’t there supposed to be a service pack for Belle in development. I doubt Carla will come on the old devices.

    • FireDragon says:

If I remember correctly what I read earlier then Carla is to come to older devices like N8/E7.

      • jiipee says:

That is bloody fast! I dont wonder anymore how Elop got the post thanks to his abilities to execute.

        http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/12/microsoft-and-nokia-announce-office-coming-to-symbian/

        • Gerii says:

On the other hand, it’s now much easier to write for Symbian thanks to Qt. And it could also be just a small update or Belle SR2 as someone posted.

My biggest hope for Carla / the next update is to eliminate the need for the Smart Installer and make installation of apps much faster.

          • Jiipee says:

            Is it made with Qt?

            • Gerii says:

Well, Symbian itself is not made in Qt, but a lot of apps are written in it (Also some of the inbuilt apps like the Store). So if they want to add new things they’ll probably do it in Qt (or partially in Qt) if it isn’t some low-level stuff.

And ehat they wanted to do with Symbian^4 back then was to rewrite all of the standard apps in Qt. They still haven’t done that with Belle so I hope this will come with one of the future updates.

  2. John says:

Carla in March ?!?! thats a bit early for Nokia surely.

I have a feeling the old Symbian 3 device will not get Carla I mean how are you going to sell an N8 successor if the old Symbian 3 devices have it ? unless they want to reward their loyal Nokia fan base.

    • krustylicious says:

The current belle trio aren’t really in the uk stores with no major carrier supporting them .. thanks to various issues (nokia)

      • John says:

I dont blame stores actually whenever I visit a phone store the only Nokia phone I look at is the Lumia 800 even as a Nokia fan i found the Symbian 3 devices boring apart from the N8. If I as a Nokia enthusiasts find them boring then surely the general public wouldn’t care either.

    • ognjen23.11 says:

      simple, hardware specs

    • weirdfisher says:

the iphone 3GS is still selling
Both the 4S and 3GS has iOS 5 update
This tells that old devices having updates dont matters much

      • ashok pai says:

but nokia underspec’d their handsets badly. 256mb on flagship devices when everyone and his dog was giving 512mb on their flagships!

      • Just Visiting says:

Y@weirdfisher…Yes, the 3GS is still selling, which is fantastic. But ask those 3GS owners about their performance degradation after updating to iOS4.x and iOS 5 – Lots of complaints.

Not sure what ‘Carla’ is supposed to bring exactly, but if it is intended to be a major update (i.e. Belle), I am not interested in installing it at the expense of performance. The N8 can only handle so much, and I think that Belle is going to be it’s peak.

        YMMV.

    • reptile says:

Well, the N8 successor is supposed to have much better specs. But I do remember something about Carla maybe only for 1Ghz+ devices.. but I’m not sure.

  3. Paul Grenfell says:

    No OTA update?
Good thing i already Flashed Belle on E7 anyway..But still with 607, not 609..
So i guess its Nokia Suite or Navifirm, whatever comes first..

  4. Taigatrommel says:

I am also surprised about this. The Microsoft Office applications have been announced for Symbian specificly. Available in Q4 2011 for the first pack, and Q1 2012 for the second pack. No mention of Symbian Carla from any Nokia source. Personally I somehow doubt the original S^3 devices will get Carla, maybe even the native Anna devices won’t.
However, I’d like to be positively surprised…

  5. smartfonefan says:

This all sounds good….as it has done for the last 6 months or so….roll on February.

I was under the impression that the last update from Nokia Beta Labs for Nokia Suite was also for the Belle update….

I was hoping that the delayed release would mean that Office would be in this release as well as Skydrive. I guess not according this information.

Sounds like it is worth the wait though it will be like having a new smartfone again. I wonder if battery life will improve hope so my E7 could do with longer life.

I wonder how many million Symbian 3 fones worldwide will get this update. Only 60,542 trial members for the beta download so far….

PS. I hope Amazon will now finally do something about getting Kindle on our Nokias’…I cannot believe that there is no proper book reader app considering how many Nokia devices have been sold worldwide.

    • Paul Grenfell says:

I have Belle on E7, and battery is no better than Anna. And yes, the latest Nokia suite (84) is ready for Belle..

      • ashok pai says:

“and battery is no better than Anna”

ouch! cannot expect more out of a frugal 1200mah battery. E7 and it’s mega screen needed at least a 1600mah. Will NOT make another such mistake again if I get another frugal handset. what’s with Nokia and under powering their devices ? the feeling is underwhelming. ideally, the device should be state of the art (for a flagship business phone) no need of a killer camera.

I wish E7 had all of this:
        5/8MP autofocus, 720p video
        1600mah battery
        1 ghz processor
good gpu to play games without pixelating

    • Viipottaja says:

      Amazon is not worldwide though.

    • Just Visiting says:

@smartfonefan…You can use Skydrive now -just go to skydrive.live.com – you will need to create a Live account. I don’t think that it will be an app for Symbian devices.

Echo your sentiments about the Kindle app. I knew it wasn’t available when I bought my N8, but after all of this time, and with the millions of users, it’s telling. Doesn’t matter though, as I’ve always planned to get a Nokia WP device – no issues with all the apps that I need and want on the WP platform :)

  6. smartfonefan says:

This is the video of Office running on Belle from last year.

  7. Troll says:

while hoping carla will make it to my n8, it does not really make financial sense to nokia as it really won’t bring in new income to them. Unless they want to built a reputation or something which i entirely welcome :D

    • ashok pai says:

hmm, apple makes it possible to support their phones for a full 2 years at least. if nokia wants to compete long term, they better take care of customers like apple does. 2 years is not a big deal. that they skimped on hardware for symbian 3 phones will hurt them long term, and the owners will surely think twice about owning nokia devices which are under powered. they are doing the same mistakes with wp7 devices. they are saying it all over again – we dont need ram, we dont need horsepower or battery. suppose they were right and the horsepower was sufficient, what stops them from plnking a 1800mah battery for devices like n9 and make the cell last for 2-3 days ?

      • Viipottaja says:

The difference is that the original iPhone 3 is still selling in massive volumes, whereas the Nokia C6-01 for example, probably isn’t (at least in the OECD markets). Apples to oranges, a bit. :)

  8. smartfonefan says:

I remember reading somewhere (probably here) that the Older Symbian devices N8, C7 ,E7 will not be getting Carla or any future updates after Belle due to hardware constraints ie. processor speed.

I’m not expecting it for my E7.

That’s a pity about the battery life not being any better but I can live with it as my E7 has become so invaluable to me.

Roll on Q4 for the Nokia MSFT business Lumia.

  9. Dc says:

so does this mean we wont get the belle update over the air? and have nokia officially confirmed that there will be a carla and donna? and that carla will come to the n8,c7,e7 etc?

    • Paul Grenfell says:

It appears so.. We may still get a notification via *#0000# but the update may only come via Nokia Suite.
Carla isnt important, i think half of us will be switching to newer handsets by then, if not before..

      • ashok pai says:

a lot of people keep their primary phones for longer period, I for one have kept my primary devices for a minimum of 18-24 months. but i will be wary of anemic devices from nokia this time around. if they are still in the “shaft the customer” mode, i will have to reconsider going for one in a hurry or look elsewhere

        • Heron says:

I suspect Donna to not be relevant IMO.

Symbian’s role in this post-WP7 strategy seems to be a main testbed for technologies and design while easing the transition.

          Can’t wait.

    • Kumara says:

I think it could, Nokia 701 and C7 both have ARM11 processor so why not clock it to 1Ghz as They did once in symbian^1.

  10. yasg says:

There is belle SR2 in development.
Next major version may not happen soon as current development efforts are concentrated more on SR2.

  11. Balachandra says:

where does it show in the Nokia suite and really want to know it about the belle for Nokia N8 should i connect and wait or just shows

  12. Alun says:

I’ll be updating my (unlocked and unbranded) N8 to Belle as soon as it becomes available in the UK.

My existing contract runs until January 2013 but I can take an upgrade from mid October 2012, hopefully the N8′s successor will be available by then and still be running on Symbian, if not I’ll be holding onto the N8 until it falls apart…

  13. lordstar says:

Will the Nokia 500 be getting Carla? According to the Symbian Latino leak, Carla will be for devices with at least a 1ghz processor. And I agree, midmarch might be too early for the next symbian update but I’m not complaining. Hehe bring it on.

Will Nokia be releasing like 3 new devices with Nokia Carla like what they did with the 700,701, and the 603?

    • 352x416 says:

From memory the 500 has officially been promised Belle. The 500 doesn’t have a GPU so not sure about 500 getting Carla.
In the past Nokia have released about 2-3 devices on each new update to the hardware or software platform. I think Nokia needs a touch and type successor to the E52.

  14. xyberxy says:

I hope symbian beats android for interoperability of software updates… Ice cream sandwich is not compatible with some high end gingerbread today haha.. Symbian c please be available to 1st gen symbian^3…

  15. zymo says:

Carl for mid march? The N8 successor is expected to be shown at MWC preloaded with Carla and being shipped within 4-6 weeks (present late, deliver early). So that would mean that the old Symbian phones would be the first ones in public running Carla. June or July is more likely.

  16. N8-02 says:

    Ha ha, my opinion
    ‘Carla relese in mid march’
This is the big false sentance nokia always gives a month name which is not true,
Month on month n date on date ,date on date, thats nokia style.
I think nokia will release carla in 2013

  17. pt says:

Agree re kindle app. Have told Amazon not buying more books until I have kindle app on my N8

  18. BellGo says:

    Hopefully this is true.

  19. JD! says:

    I guess it is bluff..

Belle will be enhanced to include MS OFfice apps… Not sure if you call that Carla!

  20. hosny santos says:

please anna belle have skype support ok,carla will not be this? i am a user off skype and nimbuzz in a e63 and evrerything is ok ,today i buy an N8 and this my doubt, if you can informer i appreciated that

    • Gerii says:

There is an official Skype app for Anna with support for calling and chatting. This app doesn’t work on Belle yet, but Skype Support said that it will come in Q1 2012.

If you only need chatting there’s an app called imo.im for Belle. It also supports a lot of other services like Facebook, MSN, etc.

  21. Mauro says:

I am waiting Carla soon to be released!
Symbian rocks, much better than android or iphone

  22. Raul says:

Wowww MS Office and skype in Nokia carla!! Superb, the best phone in the world. Symbian is very stable, low power battery, many applications and updated!!
    I love it.

  23. Rasyadan says:

so this means that there’s a high percentage that N8 will also get the carla update? :O

    • Core says:

I truly hope that Nokia Carla is going to be available for all Symbian ^3 devices especially Nokia N8. Dsmobile can you give us a tip about this. TY!!

  24. raul says:

Symbian Belle is much better than windowsphone7 or android. Hope nokia developpers keep upgrading it
