#N9Hacks: Change Font (Terminal)

| January 15, 2012 | 20 Replies

It is actually extremely simple to change the font on the N9. You simply place the font files you want into /home/user/.fonts . Use System Info to make sure the fonts are correctly installed and find out their config name. Next you locate the css files relating to the UI element you wish to change, and alter the code to resemble font: ‘New Font name’ 10mm.

Alternatively, you can just place your own fonts in the /usr/share/fonts/Nokia/Nokia Pure/Proportional folder, making sure you copy your font to replace the three file names already there. Doing this will require no alteration of css files, but will mean it will be a system wide change. The majority of css files that need to be altered, can be found in /usr/share/themes/base/meegotouch/ . These are all sorted into pretty easy to identify folders. Feel free to explore as much as you like.

NB: Make sure you back up any files you alter, in case you alter something in a detrimental way. Worse case, I have the fonts in “Nokia” backed up on MNB from one of my first N9 posts, so if you need them, click here

Hi, I’ve been lurking and reading your blog since I bought my N9 3 months ago. I find your posts most informative. Keep up the good work!

And thanks for sharing this font “hack”. On a separate note, do you know if we can load more emoticons that are workable on the N9?

    Regards.

We can indeed :) I have been tinkering with a few things at the moment, so once I get it working 100% of the time, no bugs, I’ll post it.

I BOUGHT MY 16GB NOKIA N9 2 DAYS AGO. TODAY, I CONNECTED MY N9 TO A DESKTOP THAT DOESNT HAVE EARTHING FOR POWER SUPPLY[EXTRA CURRENT SURGE(SHOCK) CONDITION WHEN YOU TOUCH THE EXPOSED METAL CABINET]
I TRANSFERED SOME FILES FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND ONLY WHILE DISCONNECTING THE PHONE I GOT A SLIGHT LOW VOLTAGE SHOCK. THEN I REALISED IT WAS A MISTAKE CONNECTING MY N9 TO THE PC.
MY DOUBT IS, WILL THIS CAUSE ANY DAMAGE TO THE CHIPSET OR ANY OTHER INTERNALS OF MY N9? IS IT HARMFUL IN ANY WAY IN THE LONG RUN? IT’S WORKING PERFECTLY FOR NOW.
SO PLEASE, SOMEONE TELL ME IF ITS OKAY AND I CAN CAN HAVE SOME PEACE OF MIND USING IT EVERYDAY, COZ I HAD IT IMPORTED AND SPEND AROUND 600 US$ FOR THE SAME.
MICHAEL OR JAY, PLEASE HELP ME WITH MY SITUATIONA ND TELL ME WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED TO THE PHONE :(

ALSO, THE PHONE HAS BEEN GIVING ME TERRIBLE BACKUP SINCE THE TWO DAYS OF PURCHASE.
AS SOONA S I BOUGHT IT, I UPDATED TO PR 1.1 AND DID A “CLEAR DEVICE” FROM THE SETTINGS. IT IS LAGGY ATTIMES AND ALSO DOESNT ALSTA DAY WITH MODERATELY HEAVY USE. 3G ALWAYS ON .

    • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

I had the same experience. It fixed itself after a few days. But if it doesn’t, do a settings rest first. If that doesn’t help, maybe do another clear device

      • Tej says:

Thanks michael. im a bit relaxed after hearing this. after how many days approximately did it fix itself? my phone seems to display 23fps action all throughout the UI, where as my friends older n9 is like 29fps. he doesnt even take proper care of it and has damaged it physically(bumps on the road also)
should i return the phone? or should i wait for a few more days ?also, the USB transfer speed is low at 3-4 mbps on average :( whereas it should be min. of 9 mbps ,as ive seen

        • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

No. It may be a difference if his is from China or Finland, and yours is the other. I wouldn’t worry, unless you are noticing a big difference in the operation in the device. If you are concerned though, I would suggest, just for peace of mind, contact Nokia directly.

    Nice post,
but any idea how to change the apps fonts just like Nokia Pure?
I found that some apps using some kind of Arial font rather than Pure itself.
    Many thanks

    • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

You will need to edit the css files relating to the application. The apps can be found by looking in /usr/share/applications (look inside .desktop files to identify where they link to). These css files will need to be altered to include the font of your choice. I can fiddle with it, and get back to you. Will take a while as my N9 dev is slow as I am using SSH and VNC
