#N9Hacks: Zoom While Recording Video (Terminal)
I was reading Ali’s excellent post on his experience with the Lumia 800 (which I agree about entirely) and remembered I haven’t shown you the first hack I placed on my N9. This hack allows you to zoom in and out while recording video. I found it quite annoying to have choose a distance and stay with it until the end. And if I wanted to zoom, I would have to create separate clips.
This hack is surprisingly simple. And can be followed in a few easy steps.
Start by downloading this file and extracting it to /home/user/MyDocs which is also the root folder if you connect your N9 in Mass Storage mode. As usual, terminal commands are in italics.
- Enable developer mode (Settings>Security>Developer Mode)
- Open Terminal
- Gain root access
devel-su
password is rootme (unless changed) - cp /home/user/MyDocs/camera.conf /etc/camera.conf
- /sbin/reboot
Phone will now reboot, and when it turns back on, you should have the ability to zoom while you are recording video. If for some reason you want to disable the feature, follow these steps.
- Enable developer mode (Settings>Security>Developer Mode)
- Open Terminal
- Gain root access
devel-su
password is rootme (unless changed) - rm /etc/camera.conf
- /sbin/reboot
Let me know if you need help

there will any button or toggle to zooming or just via volume rocker?
i want to try it but ask first
Well I’m not sure. My n9 is still out of action, so I havent tried. Getting a temp replacement tomorrow until mine is fixed. I assume it is just the standard volume rocker/on screen zooming scroll bar.
well then, i had to try it first
Many thanks
What’s your experience with it? Help others who may be skeptical.
i’m on my way home from office right now
maybe tonight i’ll try it
It works although zooming during video recording is a little choppy. Still better than not being able to zoom when you need too while recording
I actually had this need at a party and I was a little bit annoyed for not being able to do it.
Maybe PR 1.2 will have this included and working smoother.
I do hope it’s been smoothed out in 1.2.
One would imagine they’ve been working on that, if it was deliberately disabled.
The source for this was actually an Italian blog funnily enough.

WOW!! Thanks for the tip, Michael. It really works. No hassles, lag or whatsoever.
I can now zoom my videos with the best camcorder in the market – the Nokia N9
Some have reported instability/jerkiness with this mod.
You’re not having any issues at all???
“File not found” when I try to move the file camer.conf to etc. I’m sure that the file is on MyCocs. What is that I do wrong?
You have to type on x-termianl as like as author posted above “cp /home/user/MyDocs/camera.conf /etc/camera.conf” make sure the “M” & “D” of MyDocs should be capital.
hay q dejar espacios entre las barras
Dear Michael Faro-Tusino
Great thanks, mate.
It worked like a charm.

yo hago todo lo q me decis y me sale conf: noy found
y nada mas…
Thanks for the hack. Works brilliantly on my N9 16 GB model. I was hoping for the zoom to come through PR1.2, which Nokia didnt. Thought of waiting till 1.3, but no more patience and hope in Nokia.
Necro……..
Why so surprised, the harmattan team’s been downsized 90+% since Feb 2011.
They’ve done a truly remarkable job, given their circumstances.
Don’t expect 1.3 to add heaps of features…
It’ll be mostly bug-fix focused, as it should be.
It’ll most likely be the last major release too.
