N9Apps: Dalton – The Awesome, demoed on the Nokia N9

| January 27, 2012 | Comments (21)

As promised, after my exams I’d get around to N9 apps :) Here’s one that I was playing in revision breaks. It’s an awesomely addictive game called ‘Dalton – The Awesome’.

This is a simple running and jumping style game where as Dalton you must get away or kill if you can (with powerups) the zombies. Speaking of powerups, you get a skateboard to go faster, life heart things, a gun, and something that turns you into a giant.

It’s nice and responsive (as it must be for running games like this). It looks great, no? I think there’s one for Symbian too but this is 4 times as big in terms of download size at around 40MB. It’s free and it’s a must have for the N9 collection.

If you have more N9 app tip suggestions, I’m going to be going through them at our recommend an app section, mentioning in the comments that it’s for N9:

Play as Dalton on his journey to kill all of the zombies standing in his way as he achieves TRUE AWESOMENESS!

BTW here’s the category for N9 apps. It was just for demoes but now it’s for anything n9 APP wise (as we can’t always demo the newest apps as they appear)

Cheers Yemi for the tip on this app :)

    Hey Jay

Thanks for doing the N9Apps reviews.

Not related to this but 2 important posts I think you should do:

    1) I think you should get contact Michael to do this one since you have a lot tips to get through and he understands the Australian market: http://www.afr.com/p/technology/nokia_plots_march_battle_in_iphone_9Or24FJe2auz21ddpTV3TO Nokia 800′s being released in Australia in March (as I always predicted and no one would agree with :P ). Its being carried by all 3 major carriers and I’m guessing all the little one’s who use their networks as well. Not sure which retailers will carry it but if it’s anything like N9, it should be available at pretty much every single retailer.

    2) You should get someone like Bharadwaj to do this one: http://www.thinkdigit.com/Mobiles-PDAs/Nokia-leads-dual-SIM-mobile-phone-market-in_8600.html
Considering many of the newer dual-SIM devices were released towards the end of the quarter, it bodes well for the future :D

    3) If someone can be bother or cares:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/27/us-nokia-advertising-idUSTRE80Q0ID20120127 Interesting, should count in their next quarter’s profits/numbers. Looks like Elop’s getting rid of dead-weight.

  3. goosepig says:

Jay – wondered if you could help. I don’t have an N9 (yet) and still can’t find a definitive answer on whether the N9 has an FM transmitter, and if so, does it has any useable software for it?

Could you shed any light? Cheers

    • M says:

      maybe and no

    • odin says:

I listen to FM radio in my X3 when jogging.
I thought that my N9 hasn’t got a FM transmitter, but it actually has. :)
There’s quite a lot of discussion in the internet about it. N9 has not ready installed FM radio application, only a internet radio with more functionalty. You can also use Spotify or some other service provider.

The thing is that the QT (software library) does not support FM transmitter, but it is possible to program one with the native programming language.

You can already download a simple beta version of FM radio, but I bet that sooner or later there will be equivalent FM radio than in any other device.

You need a headset which cable serves as an antenna, i.e. the same thing than e.g. my X3 requires when listening FM radio.

      • Guest says:

You are confusing transmitter with receiver. FM Radio/receiver works fine.

There’s no way to enable transmitter currently, and probably won’t be.

    • Jazz says:

Read this thread from pg3 till the end:
      http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=3902&page=3
And you’ll have a more definitive answer about TX/RX than anyone can give you.
I’m telling you it’s worthwhile, so best to read it.

There is one for Symbian as well, and you’re right this game is addictive.

  7. Sangiah says:

I had it on my 5800 and it is the only game I miss so badly after bounce. I HOPE someone makes the WP version of it so that I can enjoy the game on my Lumia 710 too.:D

    • lovenokia says:

i tried a 710 the other day, it is actually a very nice device. It beat my expectations, but how are you liking yours.

  8. Viper says:

The World of Rabbits, is another good free game. Works with NFC also, to make BEARS!

    I love Dalton btw.

  9. Chrom says:

Can anyone comment on N9 app situation right now, months after its launch – is MeeGo/Harmattan platform mature enough to be used everyday? Coming from N8 owner in AUS.

    • Yemi says:

I use my N9 as primary phone and I really do not miss much. The only thing I miss is not being able to sync my N9 calendar with Outlook using Nokia Desktop.

As for everything else, the phone is good enough for majority of tasks like email, phone(yeah phone), web browsing, listening to internet radio and so on.

      • Chrom says:

Cool thanks, so are apps better than abysmal effort on Symbian? I had a play with an N9 at my local store and found it had quite a few applications which are available for N8 as well as some which must be N9 only…

        • Razor says:

          Of course not….
Why would you expect the ecosystem to be as big as Symbian’s? (fragmented as it is).
Quality ratio is higher, but total no. of quality apps is smaller.
It’ll never be as big as Symbian, iOS, Android, or WP.
But that’s quite beside the point…
It has been growing steadily, & should be more than enough for the avg user.

There’s also always the occasional gems “off the grid”.
Once you work out all the best little places to find them.

Look the only way to be 100% sure…
Is buy from a place that has a 1mth+ return policy, or borrow one from friends/family.

You shouldn’t need truck loads of apps anyway.
          Once PR1.2 hits….
Maemo6x will arguably have more functionality built-in than any other OS.

        • Razor says:

          Correction…
It may have many more quality apps than Symbian one day if the rumors about Meltemi are true.
But only if apps developed for top-end Meltemi devices, are built in much the same way as Maemo6x.
Remains to be seen, we just don’t know enough at this point.
