Nokia Lumia Launch Copenhagen ft. Halo’s Master Chief (+ sneak button free Nokia Lumia 820 :p)
Here’s an interesting video that perked me up just before my exams yesterday. It’s the Nokia Lumia Launch for Denmark and they did it with Style in Copenhagen. At the Danish National Soccer stadium, the Lumia Tiles literally came to life.
THIS is what we need people to see. To be aware of the Nokia Lumia line of products in order for them to give it a try. Because, and I will reiterate this, it is essentially a very good product. It performs brilliantly, and it just works. Simple, fast, fun. There’s a lot of people that would appreciate something that just works as a smartphone. The video is shown on both NokiaDanmark and Microsoft‘s youtube channel. There is soooo much work that Microsoft and Nokia need to do to get people to recognise Nokia Lumia Windows Phones even exist. It would of course help if it was globally available but that’s another issue.
The video is titled ft Master Chief but you only really see a glimpse. :S
Check this out. Do you think it works becoming curved at the corners? I do like how there’s minimal space wastage. Though maybe not to the extent of losing the Nokia logo. Then again, the world’s most popular phone does not have its logo on its face. It is just known by its design.
The above was just for the display and wasn’t meant to be that entirely accurate. Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive are clearly on the screen as well as hearing the Nokia tune, Lumia 800 Ferrari. The comments on both videos are promising. Usually, Nokia phone videos in US audiences don’t tend to get much positive comments (often, premature dismissal of Symbian)
I would actually love it if Nokia somehow managed to make Lumia look like the above. Again, no buttons, curved corners (the phone could simply be rectangular and just replicate the colour of the shell to make it appear curved – or black it out as WebOS and N9 does)

Id love the tiles to not waste space, Id like it to fill the whole tile view screen, its not like people need to be directed as to where the app launcher screen is at, swiping has become a norm for touch screens, again no need for that -> well for me that is, and itd be nice if the screens worked like a carousel
man. You`re such a freaking wp fanboy! Getting more and.more boring to follow you`re blog. This nokia and ms story is a stinky warm fart…hopefully this smelly air vanishes soon…
And correction – Nokia fanboy. Is this a Nokia product? Erm, yes. Is this from Nokia’s channel? Erm yes.
What do you want me to do? Ignore Lumia? The main strategy of Nokia right now? I’m posting this because it’s highly relevant to Nokia, if you don’t like it, there’s plenty of MeeGo/Symbian blogs for you to follow.
Jay how about an article on how fantasticly well the n9 sold…its nokia news and gess what good ones….
You’re only speculating that it sold fantastically well, on the assumption that Symbian didn’t see an increase in sales due to the season.
well that’s what the report says…
You again? I thought you had left this blog because it was “too pro WP”.
The N9 DID sell well. What’s your point? Lumia’s didn’t do to bad either given the time frame and the fact that their main targeted market hasn’t even begun yet.
N9: You are right,If Nokia N9 had been advertised like this, it wd have sold millions and millions of phones. Lumia as being MS phone, will never sell as well N9 would have sold. And its the truth! So lets burn some Ms advertisent money and nothing big will ever come.. Nokia will be let alone sooner or later when MS will draw the conclusion.. Ms phones are not needed in the market.. Sad but true.. If you sell them for free, maybe people will get em, but never gonna be a big business like Apple & Samsung android phones..
Get ‘em Jay.
Well said, Randall
Thank you
Jay, you care too much about troll’s feelings.
Do you really think that you can convince them with your logic? .. when was the last time that worked out for you?
Every sane Nokia fan knows that Lumia is the most important thing at Nokia right now, especially those who follow your blog. You don’t have to explain it anymore than you have to explain why you cover S40 or N9 news.
I know that you wouldn’t delete their posts (although you should), but please don’t feed them, just ignore them. Their comments worth nothing if you don’t reply to them.
I’m happy with the blog anyway and they don’t bother me, but it’s sad seeing you trying to defend yourself and justifying your hard work in front of a troll.
Sometimes I wish you weren’t that nice
Good guy Jay, nice even to the trolls.
i see 9gag reference! =D
i enjoyed the post, its why i check out this site, to see whats happening with nokia and ms.
Off you go then. Don’t let the door hit you on your way out
I actually like the offset, it’s less boring. I don’t really miss that 60 or so pixels because on other platforms there are equal amounts of wasted space just between the dead space between the rows of icons, WP7 just decides to push it to one side that’s all.
Huh? There’s 8 tiles/widgets on that screen. That’s hardly space efficient compared to other UIs. Then there’s the awful app list. scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll….. Ugh, drives me potty when I have to use my Lumia.
Why did you buy it then? it’s not like the UI came in surprise?
Been loving it myself. Certainly uses the space better than widgets imo.
The Xbox mascot, Master Chief from “Halo” should be enough to get the gamers interested in Windows Phone. They need to market how it works flawlessly with Xbox LIVE!
Yup, good idea. Xbox brand or Halo brand. Nokia Halo. Nokia Lumia. Both technically light related themes.
Xbox phone would be good. Not to the point of being an Xperia play wannabe, just having the brand name. There was a UK documentary that suggested Xbox success partially due to lack of MS association.
Everyone knows that the Xbox is Microsoft though. The branding is everywhere. It’s more likely the lack of Windows branding, as MS actually had a very good reputation for input peripherals.
Also, they realised the importance of launching early and getting lots of exclusive titles. It’s more the correct business strategy they used than anything else.
I don’t understand the hate on the Windows brand. Can anyone tell me why is that?
Elop is our problem, How can we get him fired?
Yes. Let’s bring back OPK – the man who killed the company’s reputation with the N97 and who bought the stock price down from $40 to $8.
Wake up and smell the coffee please.
was NOKIA the top smartphone world seller this time last year? Yes it was….
And now? #3 going #4 spectacular amazing, this is not speculative value on stock market over 8 years…..
Its spectacular factual sales suicide over one year… Over what? Hope??? It sure is not working…
Symbian sales should be replaced by WP sales that was the plan, note it was never to actually grow just to replace the symbian sales numbers by WP, what does the fantastic plan brought us????
Yes symbian sales are plunging down to nothing (if you say its dead), and WP is not picking up the bits, android and IOS are. Face the facts NOKIA users go to the store to get a new nokia see the wp and get and android or a Iphone…this is what the numbers tell us…. How big is the UK market??? could it be possible to spend any more money on promoting the WP Lumias???? Wow many did it sold? 100.000 pathetic.
Call me troll cal me what ever this are facts, puting your head under the sand helps NOKIA in nothing, saying Elop is a visionary whatever is at best wishful thinking.
A year from now NOKIA on the current path will be extinct. Some MS fans here will still be saying its OPK, foult or symbian or intel or what ever, fact….. Elop brought the number one smart and feature phones manufacture in the world to extinction in 2 years EPIC.
“was NOKIA the top smartphone world seller this time last year?”
Yup. An initial burst of N8 sales balanced by selling cheap variants of the 5800 at knock down costs. How many C7, C6, or E7 models do you think were sold? Why is the ASP low?
A volume based strategy doesn’t work if you erode profitability and drop ASP.
My point remains. Whether Elop fails or not will not be known until Q3 this year. He may very well do so. OPK most definitely did.
Stop it! You’re making too much sense! :p
Elop came on board as the ship was sinking. It’s nice to have a scape goat for all your problems though.
It’s completely too early to tell how well he’s doing. I’m sure people will pretend to be financial analysts and post facts to the contrary, but really everytime someone picks apart Elop or MS/Nok they rehash the same uneducated drivel. Yes it might make your circle jerk even tighter but that’s about it…
I hate those boring tiles….. they are of no use… WPs are pratically zero… Don’t expect symbian fans to migrate to so called LUMIA device… Closed source OS will be that forever… I rather get a webOS if still exists by the time symbian got no support/dead… I petty Nokia!
Symbian is closed source.
Technically not true.
They open sourced it a few years ago with the Symbian Foundation. When they closed the SF, they took the source offline but you can still request it on a CD or FTP access.
It may as well be though as building a complete Symbian stack seems to be quite a complex thing.
So how is Symbian more open source? What “open source” benefits has it made. What other useful/popular non-Nokia devices use their open source?
Development on WP7 is much easier than Symbian (at least in my opinion), and you will see more and more limits being pushed. This is the cycle of development as my experience tells me.
Plus just jailbreak a phone if you want “open source”.
It’s not Windows alone. It’s the fact that it killed the only open mobile os with a success chance only by not wanting another competitor like Android. It’s a koockoo egg! How can you like another commercial and castrated mobile os when you’re left without a choice! Get this in your head you WP fanboys!
No one has a problem if you want to play with Microsoft. Go, have fun! But if you see how WP is pushed with big money on the costs of Maemo, you only want to puke into the face of this “marketing-liar” Elop.
If you wake up one day in a world controlled by commercial monopols charging you money for breathing, don’t blame me! Blame your naivsm on blinky blinky gadgets and an idiotic fanboyism on either Android, Apple or Microsoft!
I like it because it works, is fluid and doesn’t crash.
I don’t give a shit about open source. I just ask that it’s easy to use. It is.
Haha yah cause if MS never bought Nokia, the world would be full of sunshine, love, and freedom.
If you think phone technology is making some sort of free speech political statement, your morals suck.
have you use old versions of windows???… Lots of BSOD, the Windows Milleniun & Vista fiasco.
And there is the broken promises, MS is always promising to change the world
That’s nice. Meanwhile this is 2012. ME and Vista are no longer relevant. I mean if you want to talk about awful legacy systems we could bring in the early versions of Ubuntu with their comical hardware support and tendency to fall over at will. Or we could talk about System 7 or OS 9 by Apple, a couple of the most rubbish operating systems in history.
As for changing the world. Yeah… I’d say a PC on every desk pretty much did.
Times move on. Maybe you should too?
Oh you know, just the usual. ie. being generally rubbish, monopolistic and the boring software you have to put up with at work.
Microsoft saw the sense in calling their games console the Xbox, not the Windows XBox so why they’d called their phone the ‘Windows Phone’ is beyond reasoning. It has almost nothing to do with the Windows Desktop OS.
Other than the fact that’s it’s built on a Windows OS Kernel haha.
A visual feast! Gotta love those flaming tiles.
They should do a green Nokia Lumia phone, for the Xbox fans (and Halo for that matter), I have seen quite a few people asking for that.
That would make sense, for sure. And MS did patent a design for swapping out a side-slider QWERTY keyboard with game controls ala the Xperia Play. It would make a lot of sense, and even goes with Nokia’s N-Gage heritage. They could do one Xbox branded phone and a limited edition N-Gage release with some titles like Mile High Pinball and One remastered for Windows Phone.
Yes, it should be together with an Xbox package of some sort.
I’m surprised that Digital Legends haven’t re-released or remade One. They put so much time into that game and it ran excellent with much weaker hardware and software rendering to me it only makes sense to release it in this day and age of OpenGL, millions of polygons per second pushing devices.
Throw in some Xbox Live achievements and anti-aliasing and you have a winner.
I have fond memories of One on my N82…
And me on the N95-1 – Those were the days…
I just want a Windows Phone without the capacitive buttons. Swipe UI PLS!
wooooooowowoowww now i can use my nokia windows lumia 800
Now they only have to sell at least 10 to 15 million each quarter. But therein lies the rub. There is no significant advantage to WP from my point of view. US centric Bing springs to mind. All content through Zune or over the carrier network. In any case good luck to Nokia. They are going to need it.
I really hope they do not leave out the NOKIA logo. Nokia never did it – even if big operator has demanded it. And there was a reason behind: consumers to see who is the creator of the device.
Now if they start producing WP7 phones without NOKIA logo I will start fearing that the sad rumors becoming true (NOKIA buyout by M$)…
I’m not talking just about the old legacy, Im just talking about now many times they promise to change the world, and before 3 years they abandond their promises, I’m still waiting the new filesystem, since 2004, thanks good someone has see the light and something new will be on Windows 8
Though I’m not a fan of WP, I’ve gotta say that this is an awesome physical design that goes naturally with the live tiles UI, just like the curved screen goes with the swipe UI.
