Nokia N8 and other S^3 phones now shipping with Belle?
Not sure if this is new, I remember Nokia already mentioning this in December, but apparently it’s something to report on. Perhaps it’s because there’s the other S^3 handsets shipping with Belle in addition to the Nokia N8?
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_now_shipping_symbian3_devices_with_belle_out_the_box-news-3732.php
This is Nokia’s twitter account confirming details. Now they have made a couple of error tweets in the past regarding Belle availability dates, but they’ve reiterated this one quite a few too many times to be wrong.
February is the scheduled time of release for Belle as an update for current S^3/Anna devices and will make them so much more usable and fun to use.
Cheers KF for the tip

Shouldn’t this mean that these firmware versions are now on Navifirm?
Absolutely.
Nothing on Navifirm yet.
I know, but it should be.. Nokia are toying with us..
Im tired of waiting.
Nokia is so slow, devices and devs. My last Symbian phone, or even Nokia at all
N8 user
I think it’s going to be your last Symbian phone as Nokia wont make much of them in future.
new camera phone may be be last symbian phone that has something special to offer compared to other platform phones.
The N8 might be my last.. depending on how good the 801 is, i might get that.. but i doubt they will put Symbian in competitive hardware, its not good for WP7.
> “i doubt they will put Symbian in competitive hardware”
At first I thought “oh, that’s a good point”…
Then I thought “Even if the hardware was top notch who’s gonna buy a Symbian device other then Symbian die-hards (like me) and N8 appreciators (like me)?”. If they put in top-notch hardware then people like me will still stick with Nokia and let’s face it, that’s what counts for Nokia. Even if they put on a super-high price tag (I hope they’re not reading this) I’d still buy it if the hardware was, yes you guessed it, top-notch.
The N9 sold ok and made a lot of people happy.
well considering they’re still selling millions and millions and millions of symbian phones I imagine a lot of people would buy it and not just the “die hards”
801 is for China
Its called the 801T
Symbian, 4″ screen, 8MP EDoF, Anna, etc
The N8 successor will be something else.
Nokia needs to know the majority of their fans bought them becoz of the flexibility Symbian/Maemo/Harmattan offers. Once they stop producing these devices, these fans are moving towards Android coz thats the only platform that is relevant and not cage them in a walled garden. And no, these fans don’t need an eco-system. They want flexibility and features.
yeah! you are right… leaving symbian for M***oft shit is of no good but highly reconmendable if to Andriod
+1
You’re right if I dont get the next camera king (which I probably will) im headed for Android for my next device
Bingo.
The majority of Symbian fans maybe. But not the majority of Nokia fans and certainly not the majority of Nokia users.
… FYI the majority of Nokia (smartphone) users use Symbian. In fact there are about 16-18 times more Symbian users than Lumia users.
Most of the Symbian users couldn’t tell you what operating system is on their phone, and in fact probably wouldn’t even know their phone has one. They’re not Symbian users by choice, it’s by accident, and when they move to another phone, they won’t even remember anything about it, except that it crashed on them.
This is actually quite untrue. At least in Nigeria, a country with what I would term below average literacy. Most people want a symbian phone (mostly s60v3) since that’s what they can afford and can use. PPiracy has something to do with it but frankly they can’t afford to buy the programs anyway. So they know what the phone is running and most actually know that s60 is different from s40. Funny, considering some bloggers don’t even know that. Stop assuming people are dumb.
Really? So if you show them an Android phone, a Windows Phone and a Symbian phone, they couldn’t tell the difference?
Because they could have gone with any other OS, but they chose Symbian. (Remember that no one is forcing them to choose Nokia)
U have a point there. But those ‘clueless’ users that bought Lumias thinking that they’ve got the latest Nokia phone(Symbian) got very disappointed when they realise that they can’t transfer files via bluetooth, they can’t connect to Pc via mass memory, they can’t slot in a memory card to increase storage, side loading of apps suddenly becomes near to impossible and a whole lot more frustations.. Believe me, I’ve got ‘clueless’ friends and they don’t need the whole ecosystems, they don’t need the clouds, they just want their ‘old’ Nokia back..
I asked my friend what OS he has on his iPhone, he couldn’t tell. Asked another friend what OS she has on her Xperia X8, she couldn’t tell. And im pretty sure it’s the same with other non-tech people. Also, some years ago, in times of N95, other smartphone platforms were almost non-existent, so people really didnt care much about what OS they have. This is the source of the myth about “how Symbian users don’t even know how their OS is called”. Another myth is about “how Symbian users don’t use their smartphone functions like internet or email”, often spread by Symbian haters. Funny is, that these “accidental Symbian users” are doing higher global traffic in mobile browsing than Android or iOS, according to StatCounter.
Exactly.
i assume you already seen the successor of the n8? can you please tell us hardware wise is it worth upgrading to this successor? and do you think its as the same quality as the lumias or the competition? the wait is killing us!!!!!
@dsmobile
when next camera phone is launching, if it is not launched until 30th june then i am buying sony android
mee too. ill get one off amazon. much cheaper than the carrier, who is still selling it @ 600USD
You realise the Anna update was only 4 months ago.
And many still dont have it yet..
You realize that Anna still pretty much sucks compared to the competition
subjective
but how many other OSs provide 2 major updates in slightly over a year?
you have to know that even updating to anna it’s still sucks. Generally anna is pretty much the same as the default symbian^3.
I never used the default browser because everytime I use it lagged and crashed like hell. With Opera Mobile it doesnt crash but always popped up a dialogue saying not enough memory. Pinch zooming is laggy also.
Of course the camera is very outstanding but the software is not up-to-date even with the update.
I guess the hardware is the constraint. 680Mhz cpu 256mb ram is enough for normal use. But just enough.
n8 n9 user
ive only had lag issues in pinch zoom when i visited a website like interfacelift (wallpaper website) where the page is filled with images and that’s only because i start to zoom when the page is still loading
i had a “not enough memory” issue once too, when i was trying to load a webpage that for some reason was like 15mb+ 0o
i dunno i find the stock browser quite capable not ideal but capable and after the Anna update I haven’t even touched Opera /shrug
Subjective and an opinion shared by a lot of people.
I think the term “major update” is subjective for Anna!
It seems like the firmware has been ready for a while.. they are probably trying to make sure the global roll-out goes as planned. They have to cater to a lot of carriers, models, product codes.. not an easy task by any means. Last I heard the update is scheduled for in between 6-19th next month.
N8 is my last nokia phone got delight belle cfw on it love the phone now just waiting for original firmware belle then done with nokia got my self a samsung galaxy S2 for this year but will all ways love my SYMBIAN OS
Then you have to get a better charger, headphones, a usb otg port because all default ones suck, also a portable charger if yiu’re a geavy user
hi JAY , WE ARE IN BRASIL AND our consumer market is now the 3 in world ,and we love n9 , belle etc , so noika please work in three or two OS , and stop talking nigh and in WP LUMIA ,take your chances with maemo and bring us carl and donna in N8 01 ,and the time will show what is the best (maemo of course) and WP will growing slowly
So Carla and Donna and then Elop (or the end) of Symbian. I can’t wait for Belle upgrade to be available.
Maybe I wait and see the Belle before I go buy N9.. its selling quite cheap now and I’m tempted to buy it!
No matter.. juz go n buy the N9.. With the N8 & N9 in my hands,I imagine I’m carrying a device that Nokia never made.. N98.. Priceless.. ;D
i like it ..N89 even..
That’s another one that Nokia forget to make.. ;D
Thats the trouble with Looking through Windows, instead of stepping out into the real world..
sounds more like a dig @ microsoft and WP7 tbh
But honestly what’s with that their daft tagline … ‘Life without walls’? Windows only exist BECAUSE there are walls. Else they wouldn’t be needed. Kinda strange
Yep , n8 was shipped with belle , early December..
Beats me why it hasnt appeared on Navifirm yet..
Just trying to peeve us off , i guess..
N8 with belle Os is a good phone, N9 is near to perfect.. Symbian phones are not that bad Eflop said now with Belle update and carla update to come.. Long Live N8 and other Genuine Nokia phones.. No-one needs MS S**t
Maybe they’re not “that bad”, but they’re still not good, and they used to be terrible.
WP was and still is terrible.
Since everything you say is wrong, that supports that WP was and is great!
Jari, have you actually used any of the bug-ridden nokia phones produced between 2007 and 2010?
Rather, have you ever picked up an iphone or android in that time frame?
Dunno about Jari.. But I did.. Coming from N90 as my first high end Nokia multimedia phone I went on to N93, N95, N958gb, N96, N97+iphone 3Gs+N900(when it was released later), N8+Galaxy Tab(ditched the iphone)+N9..
Yeah, u can call me a die hard Nokia fanboy fer sure.. No matter what, i’ve stubbornly stuck myself with Nokia all this while n show to my peers what i can do with my Nokia what other phones can’t do. ( i don’t make recommendations to them, juz show what i can achieve and its up to them to decide if they want it too, and more than a dozen took my advice n bought Nokias).
But no, WP..!? No way, no thanks.. I’ll juz setup shop somewhere else. Bye bye Nokia, it was fun while it last..
+100
Goodbye guys! We won’t miss your posts
Well said, friend. People call me a Nokia fanboy…go ahead I’m bloody proud of it! This N9 is the perfect phone, I can’t imagine using anything else now. Nokia’s masterpiece
You know some of us are *Nokia* fans, while not being *Symbian Only* fans!
Hmm, who’s the real fan?
The real Nokia fan is a fan of Symbian, Maemo, Meego and we try to put up with WP as long as its directed at the US market specifically.. We are not *Symbian Only* fans coz we were not fans of Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola’s Symbian phones(remember when Motorola used to make Symbian phones? when Punching Bag was still playing with a dummy toy phone) We are the true blue Nokia fans.
But increasingly, I can see Elop has brought his fans over to this blog claiming to be the true Nokia fan.. pathetic I would say..
Once the Trojan Horse gets the sack coz his baby fails to bring the bread back to Espoo and WP is put into a coma with a ‘future disruption’ project status, these fans will disappear into thin air.. pooofff..
Thanks for the personal attack. I’m a bit older than you assume. And, you’re a cockmaster.
My two previous Nokias Before my N9 were the 6230 (worked ok, enjoyed the phone, small size, no bugs) and N95 8GB, still works like a tank
I try to avoid touching any Iponys or Android stuff, but its getting more difficult bacause of Nokia & Ms marriage. Maybe will buy N8 successor if they will be one in the future. And of course will happily spend 960 usd on N10
(960usd was the price of N9 64gb on release day here in Finland, now N9 64gb costs only 656 usd, so abt a time to buy 2nd one;-).
A mid tier nokia carla phone would be my next phone. Hope Nokia makes one.
Nokia chooses symbian right from the start but ends up dumping it…
Nokia chooses to be with intel but ends up ….
Nokia killed meego even before it was released
Still on the rumor with meltemi but i bet Nokia will dump it also…
Now ms deals with Nokia but no matter how hard Nokia pulls, i see no good out of crosoft, Nokia will dump Wp at last.
Now can we now see that Nokia is a useless company
Why wait? Switch to android or iphone today!
Nokia, what we read above is good but who will change the OS on Phones that are on display at the Retailers across the Globe .. It still says Sym^3 !!
I just cant imagine how suddenly they have just sidelined Symbian .. Did not they think once that atleast till the transition to Windows happen they have to keep Symbian alive ?
Whenever i go to retailers in my country .. what i see is Symbians scattered & Nokia Lumias having their own box/place .. hell !!
What Nokia is doing .. is just trying to keep the current consumers engaged by releasing these updates thinking that in future they will switch to Windows Phone .. how wrong they are just thinking ?
If they think that out of the 100% base of Symbian only 10-20% are geeks who are aware of IN & OUT’s of the OS’es then they are totally wrong .. coz the world has just moved on .. the current generation is sensible enough to know what is ‘Hot’ in the market right now
There are certain people who just like/prefer the Grid UI .. how will they even move to Windows ? They will keep switching between Android & iPhone
Why not preserve Symbian & Meego .. why not keep the Grid UI alive .. why not give consumers an option ?
“Hell, everything seems to be going wrong in a right way”
“If they think that out of the 100% base of Symbian only 10-20% are geeks who are aware of IN & OUT’s of the OS’es then they are totally wrong .. coz the world has just moved on .. the current generation is sensible enough to know what is ‘Hot’ in the market right now”
That’s exactly what they think and yes, they are wrong. I’ve been trying to argue this point with WP “supporters” for a year now, but they’re in denial.
Maybe its time to have some depth, skill, intelligence & understanding to your argument.
Really, Dr_Zorg couldn’t convert water into ice, even with a freezer close by.
‘Maybe its time to have some depth, skill, intelligence &
understanding to your argument’ – Try adding some to yours first. You know, plank, speck, that stuff. Yeah.
We’re not in denial, you are. They’re absolutely right about the 10-20%.
Again with the assuming people are dumb. Seriously, its getting old.
No assuming about it. We read Zorg and we can only draw one conclusion, so the only assuming about it is from you.
Planet Zorg, you are so out of touch with reality.
In my N8, I have 3 layers to get to my apps
Layer 1) Home screens to slide across
Layer 2) Press the button, app screen icons
Layer 3) Click applications icon, app screen again
Is this good design to you? Are you mentally retarded?
Symbian Anna is Windows 3.1 running on top of MS-DOS 5.0
My gawd, Punching Bag, u r so clueless..quite a fool too..!! I’m so glad u’re on the Microshitz camp..!!
Ha ha
looking at sales chart of symbian i dont think they will waste money to being dualcore symbian phones.nokia india head has told that there will be 10 smart devices this year of which half will be belle powered one maybe below nokia500 to compete with dumb android phones.
Hey, Heard that Belle is the last update for N8. carla and donna updates is not available for N8 is that true?
that probably is true
rocks nokia, contratulations, Jill and Dr.Zorg, maemo and WP is reasable , and will preserve the industry nokia off MS assault in future , nokia haven´t to be microkia and more and more smaller because then
hello Jay..if i flash my N8 with a leaked Belle firmware, can i update with the official Belle when it’s released?
