Nokia N9 and Android (ICS)

| February 9, 2012 | 48 Replies

What you’re looking at is apparently Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android on the Nokia N9. Whilst this could possibly be a screenshot, it is from a reliable source (@Drunkdebugger) who has previously put android on Nokia Maemo devices.

Thanks Yakir Moshe for the tip!

A dual boot is apparently in the works, this will allow you to perhaps have the beauty of Swipe and the apps of Android. Is it me or does that clock in the first pic resemble the N8 standby clock (though clocks are generally generic in design).

Cheers Remco for the tip!

with meego and adroid .. it is the best phone ever .. period ..

    • Jesse says:

Android has trouble running well on a dual core beast haha.. Somehow I don’t think that processor is going to be very good with ICS

      • incognito says:

ICS is running quite well on my friend’s Galaxy S, and SGS has practically the same HW as the N9 given that the ICS is still not using HW acceleration for the most part…

Well, when I say `quite well` I mean – for Android standards… I’ve seen earlier versions lag far more than ICS…

    • R says:

i dont understand cpu is less then And4.0

  2. uKER says:

If this turns out even half usable, I’ve found my next phone. I’m not touching a roof tile-sized Android any time soon.

  3. Luisito says:

Android has got a beautifull body

    +1. Sure thing

the best thing in d mobile industry. I’ll b so so happy.

  6. incognito says:

Somehow the following words come in mind: blasphemy, heresy, abomination, detestation… *whistle*

Why would anyone do that to the N9 beauty? Of course, the answer is – because they can – but still…

    • j says:

      same thoughts.

      ugly compared to swipe ui.

    • uKER says:

The answer in one word: apps.

      • incognito says:

If the Android ‘apps’ were my biggest concern, I’d get a SGSII or SGN and be done with it…

The best of both worlds would be, of course, to have the AlienDalvik / ACL runtimes running within Maemo/MeeGo for those rare occasions where one might actually need an Android app not available for Maemo/MeeGo… Of course, both of those are so far just in proof-of-concept stages and they’re trying to find a manufacturer interested enough to shell-out serious money to them to possibly complete it, which given the current market circumstances means – pure vaporware…

      • SLAYER says:

indeed, apps are the only reason.

the swipe UI is way more elegant than anything out there.

        dual boot sounds nice though

      • Per says:

There are plenty of apps to N9 too. And the quality is very high

  7. xyz says:

Wooohoo, that’ll be a reason to get me a N9. Using meego while it is usable and have a failback solution for the days it isn’t supported anymore.

  8. Jed says:

I do not care for Android by any means, but this may motivate me to buy the 64gb white N9 just to run a dual boot so I don’t have to use an Android phone.

I really doubt the N9s hardware is designed for a hog like ICS, but if it can work half ass smooth I’d be impressed.

I’d be more interested in having WP7 and Meego on a single device. I don’t care too much for tons of apps I don’t use, but I find Meego is basically the better Android and iOS alternative, while WP7 is obviously on a different tangent.

    Hmmmm….white N9 on eBay for under $600…

  9. Tris says:

Interesting, although n9 hardware may be a bit slow for ics, but if it runs it runs, id much prefer to see wp7.5 and meego in a single device (n9 or lumia800), now that would be a hard combination to beat.

  10. annoymous says:

may consider getting the N9 [REMOVED]

    • incognito says:

      SPAM!

Jay, delete this one. Simplyelectronics.net is a well-known scam site…

      • USER says:

isit :s i purchased my N8 from there

        • incognito says:

They often list things that they either don’t have or at prices that are unreal, and once you shell-out money they are trying to convince you to get you something else for the money you gave them. Plenty of people have given up on reclaiming their money after months of struggle…

The interwebs are flooded with people that got burned by them…

  11. Tiago Silva says:

ICS has copied a lot of it’s UI ideas from other OSes, so it’s not news that parts of it resemble Symbian.

  12. Jazz says:

still early days if you follow the thread at TMO.
Some serious bugs/limitations yet to be overcome

    Nokia N9-00 – 64GB – White CHF 649. around 700 USD

ready to order in switzerland on stock…

    • incognito says:

… and just like all the other web shops that offers it – they don’t deliver outside of Switzerland. -_-

Also, those unicorn N9 versions from Switzerland – Country Variant Switzerland CH White 64GB V1_COLOR (059M8W6) – are the only white N9s that come without PR1.1 preinstalled, and further there is still no update for them, so you’d have to flash it to get the PR 1.1…

      It’s a good price, tho.

  14. Michael Faro-Tusino says:

It is Nitdroid, same way n900 had android and dual boot is already in effect. People interested can search TMO and FMC or even MeeGo wiki

  15. ZiPA says:

A good phone gone bad makes me a sad panda…

  16. S2Korpio says:

Should I call this blasphemy? Or borderline blasphemy? I wonder how long before the hardware caves in by the weigh a cold lunch? No, in fact, I wonder how long before this beautiful chassis will be corrupted inside out by malware?

    • Just Visiting says:

^^This. Dual booting might be an exciting thing for a ‘geek’ but anything Android on ANY Nokia device is an abomination. Frankly, I think this ICS on the N9 is akin to vomit!

    • DesR85 says:

“…No, in fact, I wonder how long before this beautiful chassis will be corrupted inside out by malware?”

This just makes me wonder why Google haven’t taken any action on this issue, which is prevalent on the Android Marketplace. How difficult can it be to set up a team sort out which app is legit and which one is a malware/virus?

One of the reasons why I avoided Android-based phones, aside from the lag even on high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S2.

  17. Lauren Daly says:

Hey, i reallllllllllllllllly am sick of my nokia store as there are no good apps at all on it, is there anyway i could download this android store on my current nokia n9? if anyone could help me that would be amazing
