Update on Nokia Carla Bug Report

| February 10, 2012 | 60 Replies

About a week ago Jay posted that Carla had appeared on Nokia’s developers site under bug reports; which proved how real it was, at the time I didn’t think anything of it but I just realized that I have a Nokia developers account WOHOO! So for whoevers interested here’s a look a the complete bug report.

The only interesting part I found was:

“Carla does not display a soft key response in the menu panes”

Anyone else find that sentence confusing? does that mean that the ok/cancel buttons are no longer there?

Btw as we’ve just seen belle was released as version 111.whatever.something so Carla is directly after it, unlike Belle which jumped from .25 to .111

Any chances Carla will come on N8? or will i have to purchase the mighty “N8 Successor” ?

    • dsmobile says:

you have to buy new one.

      • NeNoRmAl says:

Please DS!Please tell us what’s the screen resolution of the N8 successor???

Is it the same as N9?Please tell only that…

        • dsmobile says:

I think it will be same resolution with current symbian phones but 3.9″ as N9. :(

          • Marc says:

damn thats really shocking! for 2012 standards! no wonder elop wants symbian to fail an WP to win, shocking! its like saying your one child must lose so that the other one must win. :(

            • Jay Montano says:

To be fair, S^3 shouldn’t have been nHD anyway. Perhaps there is more to it that being Elop’s choice, no?

              • Jill says:

iPhone did change its phone resolution from 320*480 to 640*960 .. had there been no Feb 11 Announcement or a Feb 11 Announcement with both Windows & Symbian going together .. this would have been easily possible with Symbian too ?

I personally feel that N8 Successor with the same resolution will not be a success .. media would be the first to pull it down.

Atleast if the resolution is the same as of N9 it would be good .. even from App point of view (probably developers will start developing for that resoulution)

          • stylinred says:

im actually fine with the screen resolution

but i thought donna was the update that wouldnt be on legacy devices not carla?

            :(

ah well ill likely be getting the n8 successor anyhow

            • Chen Zhe says:

Me too. I think nHD on 3.9″ looks much better than pentile 854×480 on N9

            • Jiipee says:

that could have been the original plan.

it’s been in the news that Accenture has already started to offer resingation packages and what I heard earlier, they have been moving the best resources away from Symbian internally. Well, have to admit that they must have had excess personnel in the Symbian development in the first place.

limiting the screen resolution is logical according to Elop. only WP will have the ‘ best work’ from Nokia. Just imagine how bad it would look, if Symbian phone would receive good reviews and would sell well.

    • uKER says:

I think Carla is actually to be put into the N8. Just not Donna.

  2. dsmobile says:

    111. belle
    112. carla
    113. donna

  3. SLAYER says:

according to iceman 111 & 112 indicate the year. so i dont think it’s an indicator of how much change the next version will have.

  4. ritesh says:

Eagerly waiting for MWC.. its gonna be my next fone.. hope they reveal it there..as damian is going !!

  5. saad says:

is it possible that carla might be Belle’s succesor?

    • migo says:

Load of shit. No new phones or OSes will get Adobe Flash player. Any real dev would know that, so everything else you’ve posted is purely a fan wank as well.

    • MoritzJT says:

      Haha, thanks for that spam…

    • dronex says:

I wish this all to be true but guess I’m a dreamer just like the one who wrote this.

Oh wait, or is that you mr. Flop?

    • Mac says:

If Nokia indeed delivers all the above stated at MWC then 2012 would definitely be the year that the world would end:)

I would love to see Nokia rise to the challenge though!!

    • A-S-D says:

      Problems with this:

      - NOKIA 801 running CARLA OS.

Er… 801 is actually 801T and is for China running Symbian Anna with the same internals as N8.

      - ARM11MP core introducing multicore
      support.

Not real, there’s no such thing. Cortex-A9′s are the first multi-core processors in mobile phones.

      - N9 PR1.3 update which include 150 new features. Its a major update.

Confirmed to only be a minor update.

The others are plausible but unlikley.

“Confirmed to only be a minor update.”

Confirmed to be a minor update “but” w/quite a few extra features, some possibly fairly major.
Usually such odd-number releases are focused almost entirely around bug/perf/stability/sec fixing.
But they’ve made clear this one will be more like an even no. release.
Although it won’t add anywhere near as many features as 1.2.

Sir, i hav a Nokia 701,will it b upgraded fully this new carla & donna os
      plz reply

  8. Marc says:

Well nokia said they coming with a BANG to MWC. does that mean we will see groundbreaking stuff? after CES were nokia said its “operation rolling thunder” they only released one phone and was a huge let down. So I dont believe all this crap about coming with a bang. For all I know is they could/will release a n8 successor but with 2010 specs and hardware! no way symbian will get high end features :(

    • Marc says:

sorry but after thinking a bit if we get a n8 successor doesnt that mean we will get 1080p playback and recording? does anyone know whats the cheapest SoC that can do 1080p? these arm11 1Ghz SoC’s certainly cant do 1080p right? and do you need processing power/strong gpu to have a huge sensor like the n8 successor will have?

    • Janne says:

You misunderstood “rolling thunder”. It does not mean instant bang.

Thunder starts in the distance. First it is very quiet, very far away. And then it rolls closer and closer…

Elop explained it in an interview. They have put the first distant bangs on the U.S. horizon with first the 710 and soon the 900.

Rolling thunder is apparently related to Nokia’s U.S. operations, referring to how invisible they are there, so it is their plan to ramp up slowly but surely.

Certainly, CES was not a bang. Let’s hope MWC is, though.

  9. manu says:

1080p recording should be possible with n8 sucessor.otherwise whats need of bringing it.i thinkit has to do more with gpu than cpu.

  10. manu says:

why dont you people give a rest to donna, nokia should have already abandoned that idea.they knew that even if they bring it nobody willbuy it.most of the hardcore symbian fans now could have already turned into android or maybe even windows fansboys.

  11. Kaizer Allen says:

I don’t think we will be able to see more Symbian devices given that Elop (yes, hate me if you wanna, but that’s true) will purposely delay all the updates until they are considered obsolete even by Nokia’s standards. Sales will stumble until he has a reason to kill the platform earlier than 2016 saying, “The market has shifted and we no longer sell Symbian devices than we expected. We have decided to bring at least one more software update to our support our recently released phones before we completely go out of the Symbian business. Windows Phone will always be our flagship operating system and the plan is to make it successful.” Elop’s tactics are sickening.

    Elop fans, go shoot me.

  12. Janne says:

    Few comments:

    - Those criticizing the Symbian development and device specs should consider the possibility that their slowness or lowness is not because Elop pulled the plug, but exactly the reason Elop pulled the plug. He said during Feb 11 last year that Symbian was having trouble spanning to the next generation of hardware, hence we are still at ARM11 when the rest of the industry has marched on. Nokia was spending disproportionate amounts of R&D to keep the old Symbian going and still with poor progress. Maybe it just is too much of a mess and hence lack of many modern things. This may be a Nokia’s past mistake (way back when) to let things go this way, remember how long N8 and Symbian^3 took to get semi-stable and released, but it has not happened on Elop’s watch.

    - As for resolutions and the like, I’m sure app-compatibility is an issue. S^4 was supposed to break compatibility to move Symbian into the 21st century but thinking “ecosystems”, doing so would put Symbian into an even worse position than it is now. Of course this is where the decision to ramp-down Symbian affects things – Nokia can’t now break backwards compatibility entirely and expect people to develop for a even more diminished market. I expect (just my guess) Carla and Donna to retain S^3 compatibility as much as possible. Having said that, I’m not sure Nokia’s plan of an incompatible S^4 was ever realistic anyway from an ecosystem point of view, nor if it would have helped from a technical development point of view – or if it would have been a limiting factor in the future as well.

Remember how displeased we were with Symbian progress before Elop killed it… maybe it really deserved to go? Just too much of a mess?

Now, Maemo was a different story of course…

honestly i really wish there is somebody behind manipulating all this. At least i can blame somebody on why everything is so damn late. I blame aas thou. I bought the n8 because of the claim that improvements like the keyboard will come by jan 2011. They said so and look what happened.

Qualcomm and Spretrum is going to CortexA5 from ARM11. Nokia??

  15. pulkit076 says:

Carla is not gonna be a major update for sure. AFAIK, only leaked info on this is of the browser update, more widgets, something like polished Belle and not big improvements. Take a look at this update cycle from the start of Symbian^3.

Introduction of Symbian^3 (Major Update, Big Improvements) –> Symbian Anna (portrait qwerty, new browser, Not so big update) –> Nokia Belle (Full UI changed, Major update) –> Nokia Carla (??? U can imagine it) –> Nokia Donna (Hardware shift, possibly new UI, somw use of swipe, Major Update)–> ???

Maybe, carla will come to N8
