Weekend Watch: Nokia’s 41MP Monster, Nokia 808 PureView reactions from NDTV

A video review on the Nokia 808 PureView popped up this week. NDTV seemed to really like it, and even gave the phone to a blogger (which turned out to be the one and only Vaibhav, who we know already loves the 808) and a professional photographer, Anushka Menon.

She says it provides everything a little camera would provide, not SLR in terms of quality. For some reason, she seems to think photos from the 808 will take up a lot of space. Fortunately no, not the PureView pics.  The 38mp pics are a bit larger but you could still store over 1500 photos in full resolution and still have space to spare with a 32gb card for a few movies and music.

Of course, Canon 5D Mark II with the best lenses is expected to have ultra superior quality. It would be interesting to see PureView mode pictures compared and also how the 808 fares against entry level DSLRs on Kit lenses. What’s amazing is how folks are even jumping straight to DSLRs to compare the 808. Other phones don’t seem to be even worth comparing :p. (BTW, seems to be a lot of haze/flare on the 808 pics. Was the glass smudged? Perhaps the 5D had a polarising filter to eliminate glares and increase saturation?)

At the end, a student and graphics designer give the 808 pics a look and conclude that the 41mp is good for blowing up pics, but someone interested in photography would apparently not buy this phone, but a camera instead.

Whilst the 808 might be in a small niche, I think it represents precisely where cameras and pocket cameras in particular are going. Who says camera phones have to be dreadful? N8 didn’t. 808 says phone pics can be phenomenal.
