Video: Nokia Lumia 710 sample video; is it better than the 800?

I’ve not been that impressed with the camera on the Nokia Lumia 800 (my expectations are N8 level), particularly in video when it seems to have difficulty focusing on anything. I’m not sure what it is, but it seems to affect other users too. Even Nokia themselves as they even put Lumia 800 ads with out of focus video out to the public. What’s that about?

Camera is not really the strong point of the Lumia range right now (which is a shame as Camera is Nokia’s thing), so I was surprised to see this first video by the Nokia Lumia 710 looking so good in comparison. Well, the scene is exceedingly bright (plenty of sun) so there’s ample light everywhere. Notice how quickly the 710 focuses between distant and near objects. It’s pretty difficult to notice the point when the 710 is trying to refocus. Check out how quickly it focuses on the sign and back to the truck at 00:30. I’ve collected some other user samples in this post.

It also looks more fluid.

Another well lit sample. Quality looking decent, above average.

Indoor. Focusing still quite decent

Cloudy and gloomy sample. Tracking/panning looks nice and smooth. indoors, really low light resulting in focusing problems.

This comparison we had seen a while ago. I believe there has been an update for the 800 fixing white balance right?

This video is by the Nokia Lumia 800. It’s different conditions altogether, though also quite bright. Focusing seems better than the usual 800 performance.

Low light. Better than normal.

Not sure if it’s just me but the newer 800 videos are looking better than older samples. That might just be due to the nature what videos I’m just happening to find, or it could have been improved software wise…

Having said that…

That took a while to focus.

If it is software, let’s hope that the Lumia 900’s 720p recording doesn’t inherit the continuous autofocus speed of the 800.
