Nokia 306 manual confirms S40 swiping, multitouch, 3 homescreens and drop down status bar.

| April 9, 2012 | 40 Replies

Over the weekend we saw details about the Nokia 306, with some pictures possibly inside the manual.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/04/06/leaked-nokia-306-first-full-touch-s40-or-a-new-symbian/

Now we can look at the full manual. It’s good to see it is all within one manual (as opposed to being from different manuals).

This confirms:

  • Swiping
  • Multitouch
  • Three Homescreens
  • Drop down status bar
  • Features memory card slot

If you want to check it out,  you can download it here

Cheers KF for the tip

Not sure where this manual comes from but a search points to unwiredview for this particular file.

  1. This must also mean it’s the first S40 phone that has a capacitive screen, instead of the crappy resistive onces :) (The pinch zoom, cant do that on a resistive screen as far as I know)

    • Jill says:

One of the Asha’s already have it

    • DM says:

Yes, this is true it is impossible to have multi touch on a resistive screen.

      • incognito says:

Not really, if you add more tin layers you can have as many registration points as you want, and with far greater precision than capacitive screens at that. You can also utilize voltage modulation at high speeds to register more touches than one.

For example, Stantum creates a multi-touch, feather-light-touch resistive touch-screens – think of the feather-light touch registering on the N900 and increase sensitivity about 5 times (that’s how guys that tested it in RL explained it). Here are some of their demos: http://www.stantum.com/en/medias/videos-demos

    • mark says:

They’re not crappy – I find capacitive have their downsides too (only work with direct touch, which I find has less precision, and can’t use stylus at all which is useful if you want extra precision for e.g. drawing apps or writing notes, or you are eating food and don’t want to smear food over your expensive smartphone). Multitouch is sometimes a useful addition, but I don’t find it that significant.

Thankfully Samsung seem to have perfected capacitive screens that also allow styluses (as with the Galaxy Note) which is the best of both worlds, but otherwise, I wouldn’t say that one is “crappy”, they each have advantages or disadvantages.

  2. Lee says:

Nokia should’ve just copied the N9′s interface especially the 3 home screens – events, apps and multitasking.

    • Pdexter says:

Rather than just thinking how it should copy N9.

      Think why it can’t.

The multitasking screen is constructed there mainly because of the live multitasking. You will never see this in a 60 euros phone. iOS multitasking is only possible on cheapo phone like this, if anu multitasking at all.

Event screen makes sense because it pulls live social feeds all the time. Makes no sense on a 60 euros phone. Rather view that updates only ever 3 or 4h or only when you tell it to. No need to waste one whole main view for it.

  3. Kaizer Allen says:

I love seeing Nokia Sans make a comeback on the manual.

    • Jay Montano says:

Ha, it brings back some nostalgia that antiquated look. There were various instances where different phones were used as an image. Hopefully that doesn’t mean too much and this isn’t some multi spliced manual.

  4. Meegus says:

    I loved it!! :D
    something big is coming!! :D
waiting for june ou september for the news!!
    3 ashas, 2 lumias… and a unknown terminal 605

  5. SLAYER says:

pull down menu on s40? this is huge

are we sure this is still s40?

    • migo says:

It is. S60 changed a lot over time. The good thing is in a couple years when this kind of S40 phone is more common, we’ll know anyone still complaining about Elop and Feb 11 is a total moron.

      • jhamzy says:

i still want a meltemi device!! isnt nokia having an even ths september! i hope they will release a meltemi! and remove s40! but im not saying that they should discontinue s40 but i just hope that they will release a meltemi device!

    • mark says:

Indeed – and the sad thing is, the press will probably still refer to the devices as “dumb” or “feature” phones simply because it’s S40.

(Once upon a time, smartphones were phones that were computers, and dumb phones weren’t. Then we got the odd “feature” phone classification. Today’s S40 are by rights smartphones by any sensible definition. Low end smartphones perhaps, but that’s no different to say low end Android smartphones. And let’s not forget that the original IPhone was labelled a smartphone, even though it *couldn’t* run apps, something that had been standard of “feature” phones for years…)

  6. Larux says:

I read this manual yesterday. I own all maemo-meego devices (770,N800,N810,N900,N9) and know that Java is not included by Nokia in N9 (for example).

    Manual includes Java copyright information.

Well, what does it mean? Yes, it means that this device will be S40 with new UX, not Meltemi. This is S40 with stereoids – device for lowend. I will bet that Meltemi will be meant to mid-end. (fight with Android)

Meltemi doesn’t have Java, or at least it’s successors doesn’t have Java by default.

    • incognito says:

Meltemi can have Java if they decide to include it – after all, you can easily install OpenJDK on any of your devices and you’ll have a fully featured Java – J2ME libraries usually used by s40 and other low-end devices are even easier to include in the bundle.

      • Larux says:

Yes Yes. I din’t say that it is not possible. However, It’s strong hint that it’s S40 device. Meltemi for my knowledge is Qt device where Java is nice add-on, but Qt is main toolkit for software development.

I tend to think that S40 will replace S30 and Meltemi will replace S40.. Let’s see ;-) Device described in manual is not meant to fight against android is sure. It’s way too simple OS.

        • Jiipee says:

I was reading through some stuff related to Qt5. Could it be that Meltemi wont be out before final release of Qt5?

I think it could still be possible that even S40 gets Qt (if its technically feasible). nokia is so much emphasizing the qt for next billion that I doubt they can achieve it solely with Meltemi

        • Ebon & Unicorn N9s says:

Meltemi will be a Qt-based OS but I think it’ll include J2ME for all the apps available for S40.

  7. Stefan says:

Too bad it’s still S40; as soon as Meltemi comes out I’ll be the first one to buy a new phone :D (if the screen is capacitive that is).

  8. KF says:

Well it’s definetly S40, but I really hope Meltemi won’t disappoint us and reach the mid-range level (6XX or even 7XX won’t be a bad idea)

    • JH says:

That’s what I hope for too! This Series 40 upgrade looks great for the lower end and a Linux based mid to high end OS (Meltemi) would be a great compliment to Windows Phone and hopefully a worthy successor to Symbian (which Windows Phone isn’t…).

  9. Jill says:

This development in a way suggests that S40 will live on in the feature phone segment (supported by Smarterphone ?)

Meltemi will probably replace Symbian in the low to mid end range competiting with cheaper androids ?

WP will handle the mid to high end segment.

Guesses .. they always live on :)

    • KF says:

I hope Nokia brings an HD-capable GPU to those Meltemi phones as well, the 603 is now under 200$ and brings HD video recording and HD games so why not bring them to Meltemi?? These will be real cheapo-droids killers (even the Belle phones are, but you know, the bad reputation of Symbian is killing their sales).

  10. yemko says:

Go away Nokia! am tired of my sluggish crappy bug based 5230, can,t waste my money on dead Os with no future. Bring meltemi to us quickly or else i’ll join andriod wagoon sooner than expected… And who cares about silly s40 touch laggy UI

    • Hexpoll says:

You’re complaining about a phone that was released more than two years ago at a price point unlocked of $100 USD.

  11. michcho says:

But there will be no portait qwerty and no multitasking ;/

  12. Meegus says:

Jay look at this video and for the nokia 306 manual!!
the sms keyboard is the same!

  13. phph says:

Some of you guys are mentioning Melmeti to be the new mid-range for Nokia… But hasn’t it been stated right from the start that it was meant for the next billion(read: low end)

I thought the entire reason for going with WP was because Microsoft would let them make cheap mid range WP phones like the Lumia 710. Not that I’m a big fan of WP in anyway…

This just looks like a slow transition to Melmeti because it isn’t ready yet. I even doubt it to be all that great… I love Meego Harmattan, but I wouldn’t want a lite version of it. It’s a pretty simple and stripped OS as it is. I also doubt that Nokia are interested in making an OS that could compete with their high end Lumia phones. Makes the whole WP strategy sound stupid.

    • Marc says:

I agree and why on earth would I want to buy a phone which is a stripped down version of the n9 where I can still buy an n9? also iv’e seen a lot of people here saying meltemi this and meltemi that like its already an amazing OS! I don’t want to get my hopes up for this because Nokia haven’t wowed me since the release of the n9 and the 808. this lumias are just the same Wp7.5 like on all the htc’s and Samsung’s but just with the body of the n9! I guess If you want Nokia’s real flagship you have to wait till end of the year! geez! wonder how many high end meego/harmattan and symbian phones we would have had if Nokia didnt take this WP move because they went from meego being to slow to WP which also is not ready till end of the year!

  14. tomwhat says:

Guess what…I’m also not hyperthrilled about any low end Meltemi. Only if its really cheap, has Maps and N9 apps are easily portable to it. Then I would consider this as a phone for my dad/sister.

Otherwise i’m just waiting for N9 prices to drop and to drop and buy some more…It has all I need even a faster GPU/CPU wouldn’t hurt. But at this time I have most applications I need and as I’m also not caught my Microsofts $$$$$$-campaign…I can say what the f..

  15. lordstar says:

So this is the high end of the low end that elop talked about before? Or is that meltemi?

Also want a worthy successor for Symbian, though I think it’s too early for that since we have belle fp1, fp2, carla, and possibly donna.

I just hope that the ui for this one doesn’t suck.

    • krustylicious says:

Public dual core symbian is dead.

The aol deal worries me as I think Symbian’s Ip is next for Microsoft (along with the map suite).

Melmeti has always assumed to be low end, we don’t know that is to be low end.

  16. viipottaja says:

My guess is that the Meltemi UI/UX will be an evolution of this S40 touch UI/UX more than an evolution of the N9 UI/UX.

  17. Rustyknight17 says:

Guys , a Nokia insider ( nokiagadgets.com I think ) is quoted as saying that Meltemi is not only for low and mid range phones but can be scaled for high end phones too !
Ithink Meltemi has definite potential ! Remember that it’s Linux based , and should bring a lot of features even on the low end !

    • Sonny says:

but will elop allow it to be high end and compete with it’s precious WP? overall if symbian couldn’t get a real high end device why would meltemi which is made for the next billion have it?

      • tomwhat says:

It can have potential and yes it could be scaled up….for what? To reach a level we already had with N9? Also WP has potential if they make it free and if you wait for another year…

This is all to hypothetic for me – even I would wish they bring high end devices one day
