Word Tiles – Words With Friends for Symbian and MeeGo

We were contacted by a developer yesterday named Kimble Young who wanted to share his app – a game for Symbian and MeeGo called Word Tiles – an equivalent to Words with Friends. Scrabble if you will.

He asked if we wanted to know any more so we asked him some questions that I thought might interest our readers.

  • what it was like developing the game,
  • what tools you used,
  • how long it took and
  • why you chose to develop for Nokia devices, and
  • what you think of Qt.

The game has actually been in development for 10 months now when it became obvious that Symbian needed a great multiplayer crossword game. The length of time that it took is due to the fact that it’s mainly been just me working on it and as a hobby not a full time job. The game is developed almost entirely in Qt Quick using QML and javascript which really is a big tip of the hat to capabilities of the Qt Quick platform.

Nokia really has had a bad time since management last year basically said stop developing for the platform. It left a huge vacuum in developer mind share which I must admit I and a few others have exploited since. Nokia apps have actually helped me, my wife and two year old daughter to travel the world for the last six months . Coming from Australia we’ve spent time in the USA and Europe. I’ve become a digital nomad.

As long as Symbian/N9 users keep using their phones I will keep supporting them.

The future for Fumbo (my label) will no longer be exclusively on Symbian but employing more HTML5 technologies as it evolves for mobile devices. This won’t mean Nokia users lose out though as there’s good support nok Meego and even Symbian for these technologies.

Is this available on WP for the Lumias? Seems all my friends are ditching their Androids and going with either the 710 or the 900. Would like to play this with them…. I’ll check if it’s in the Marketplace…… it’s not :(

Very nice app and great developer comments. I downloaded or almost a month ago seemingly and played a game of it last night.

Clean UI and smooth animation abound.

Nice looking game, I will try it on the N9. I called a ATT store to check if they had any 900 cyan in and the saleslady said they just got more this afternoon and the 900 is selling better than the 4S did. I went into a small town ATT and she said the only phones she sold today were the 900. Seems Jays preference for cyan is popular here too.

Wait.. so can you play with someone playing words with friends on their iOS device ? or is this a completely different game/server ? I am guessing it is different, in which case.. the other players need to have it as well.

Thank you for continuing to support Symbian and MeeGo during these uncertain times for Nokia. The community applaud you for your hard work :)

I’m addicted to this game. If you downloaded it more than a few weeks ago, then don’t update when prompted by the store as it includes annoying ads after every turn!!

YEP it’s really annoying but I uunderstand the developer needs to make money! The previous version doesn’t have these adds.

I can’t buy the paid version either because it’s not avaulable yet. I’m not sure how much longer I can put up with these annoying ads.

Some features I’ll like added is
    - to be able to skip your turn without swapping tiles
    - to be able to check the word validity before playing it
    - and what happened to the two blank tiles?

Interesting to hear from a developer: “Nokia really has had a bad time since management last year basically said stop developing for the platform”

    Great management skills…

Great game. Kudos to the developer. I just want to challenge you to make it cross platform and allow more than two players at a time if multiple friends want to play together. Mind you there is no word game that is entirely cross platform.

It’d be awesome if he could extend it to iOS/And. using the Qt API mappings.
It would be a financially advantageous move too…
