Is Google Maps working on FP1 ?

There were people saying that it isn’t … here in the US gmaps is almost essential, at least in my area indexing is way better than nokia maps

    • RVM says:

On Belle, u have to turn on wifi before starting google maps. Once running, u can turn it off again. It might be the same issue in FP1.

    • shallow ocean shoal says:

What’s your area?? Haven’t had any problems wherever I’ve been across the USA with nokia maps

In fact, I’ve found that for driving directions google maps in the NY area has led me astray, while nokia maps were on the ball!

A slew of Symbian^3 phone-related comments is coming, that’s for sure. I think it’s time to get a new phone, it’s been a while since they released the Nokia N8 and it was served with a lot of updates (two major ones, in fact), but it seems people aren’t yet contented with what they have and what they have received. I don’t get the craziness about software updates nowadays – yeah, it’s always good to receive them for free and it’s now “a part of the deal” – but back then, we only get minor firmware upgrades and nobody complains.

    • SLAYER says:

another major update is coming for older phones. an even newer browser than on FP1, updated music player, a bunch of widgets and updated qt. thats most of the FP1 features.

    • DM says:

Oh I’m sorry my almost 1 year old E7 doesn’t deserve an update because it’s old… Why don’t we go through phones once a year? Well I’ll tell you why; I buy a phone to last as long as possible, I bought the E7 because at the time there was no keyboard on the market was even close to that. Now, one year on and we still haven’t got a keyboard on a phone that is close to my E7. So I still have my E7 and use it on a day to day basis, now, when I heard about Belle Features pack 1 I was hoping at some point for that great update to come to my phone because I still have it! I shouldn’t have to buy a new phone every year just because of a “Feature Pack”. Did you buy a new PC when you couldn’t run windows XP service pack 3? I don’t think so.

      • waseem says:

using the cfw available for e7 with most of the feature of fp1 or else we should wait….?

      • KF says:

If you switch to Samsung or any other Android OEM you will be shocked ;)

        • Kaizer Allen says:

Unless he opts for a Nexus or a Droid, he will have to wait for so long just to get even the minor[est] of updates.

        • jagger says:

i switched from E7 Belle to Xperia Pro android. Its not really shocking but both OS have its pro’s and cons. I always bring these two giant phones with a hand bag.. argh, If only Belle can produce much integration of android, apps, its already perfect, Android can’t do real “multi tasking”, their RAM is terribly bleeding but you run their apps its very fluid. Belle is so smooth in multitasking but lags and hangs when its already full. So I can say nobody is perfect.

      • Don’t be silly. The E7 has ALREADY had two major OS upgrades. And I dare say most of the best bits of Belle FP1 will come too. I reckon you’ve done quite well out of it already.

But Belle FP1 has too high a hardware requirement to be put on the E7 as-is.

        • jagger says:

I’ll be very happy and will put my Xperia Pro Android on my stock room if E7 will just be upgraded like Nokia 808… Nokia needs an overall overhaul on their hardware and they can’t just execute it quickly… sigh

  3. fido says:

Can anybody confirm they getting Microsoft office as an update in belle fp1? I am not getting any on my 701. If not, then when are we getting office because I need it badly

  4. gordonH says:

I just tried the 701 today. That thing runs smoother than the galaxy S2. The 701 with symbian belle feature pack 1 is really really good.

    • dss says:

I tried one my self couple of days ago.. and I agree, it runs really well. It makes me feel even better about the 808

    • manu says:

i dont think its smoother than galaxy s2,i have compared both xperia ray and 701 ,ray is faster.701 even faster has ocassional inconsistency.

  5. DM says:

I walked into an shop and updated their 700 to Belle feature pack 1 because it annoyed me that they update all their iPhones but don’t care for Nokia :L

  6. Sefriol says:

I doubt that they even bother to bring FP1 to N8. 808 is already here with exceptional hardware. With the limitations of symbian in mind ofc.

    • dss says:

If you really look at what you get with Symbian, it really has very few limitations. The browser (and the weak hardware required for a good one) is the only thing holding it back..

Everything else is 3rd party apps.. Symbian as an OS is very good.

      • manu says:

the nhd resolution and arm11 cpu is a draw back, but its too late.nobody cares of symbian except die hard fans.damn if N8 was launched with 701 hardware and belle fp1.it should have been different story.

        • HappyN9User says:

With Nokia it’s always if-only-they-had… So much so that it’s painful to watch.

I can add another one: if only they had announced the 808 without the burning platform memo. Maybe not a game changer but they might have made some money instead of losing it.

        • vladest says:

again and again and again: there is no screen resolution limits in symbian
and I dont think that write bootstrapper for another SoC is big issue

          • Doffen says:

THen why the F@@k is Nokia so hesitant to upgrade the Symbian hardware? It seems moronic even by their idiotic bookkeeping standards.

  7. burak says:

still waiting here for the fp1 to the 701 in germany…

  8. CapitanSevilla says:

SW Updates make people happy, and have happy customers, makes them loyal to the brand.
So please Nokia, release Belle FP1 to the N8…

    • shallow ocean shoal says:

End of life, Grandma. Time to get a 808

      • HappyN9User says:

It’s great that phones are getting better and better but it’s also a shame that they are getting old so fast. Canon announced their 5D DSLR in August 2005, and although they are already selling 5D3, the original is still a very capable camera.

  9. lordstar says:

Oh finally a video of Belle. I love the vintage look of this video. Hehe
Belle fp1 really improves the ux. It just seriously lacks promotion, like reaaaally.

  10. Rob says:

Belle FP1 is suppose to be coming to older Symbian phones like the E7, X7 & N8 sometime this June (maybe mid to late June). I can no longer remember where I read it but it was an interview with one of the department heads of Nokia in Spain. I read the comments before the start of May and it was in connection with FP1 also being made available to older Symbian^5 phones.

I have both a 700 and an E7, but prefer using the E7 because of its larger screen. Belle works great on the E7 even though it has half the ram and half the speed of the 700. My 700 has FP1 and I must say, it improves the UI quite a bit. It has much smoother graphics and snappier speed than before. If the stories are true that FP1 will be coming to phones like the E7, then I’m a happy man!

  11. JGrove303 says:

People who bought a N8-00 for the camera as its main feature would be downgrading moving on to any thing other than the 808 PureView. Considering it’s not available yet, (Even longer for markets that S^3 devices didn’t really get a push, and possibly never for those poor souls in Australia) we N8 faithful would like an official update to increase the usability and features of our trusty, less than 2 year old hardware. That’s not too much to ask and I’m sure Accenture is more than up to the task.
Not like updating the N8 is going to keep is from the 808. They aren’t even in the same league anymore. A proper upgrade. Unlike some of the OTHER phone manufactures out there, Nokia doesn’t seem to need people to change up devices yearly. The difference between the Galaxy S and SII is not significant enough for the commoner. So allowing an ICS update on the Galaxy S would be detrimental until well after the SII was released. I know it took for ever for the S to get Gingerbread, and the USA T*Mobile version T959 Vibrant still won’t get Gingerbread since the T959V Vibrant 4G (the same handset, plus a little faster HSPDA radio and a different battery cover) came out shortly after, which its self will not get Ice Cream Sandwich because it would kill SII sales and eminent SIII sales on the Magenta.
The CFW scene has proven that, be it Symbian, Android , or jailbroken iOS, it doesn’t take re-engineering the whole damn kernel to implement these updates into packages that the lesser hardware can take advantage of. Hell, I was running Gingerbread CyanogenMod 7 on my HTC Hero, and it was running smoother than the official 2.1 Eclair.
Sorry, I rattled myself right off topic. My point is that the only reason a manufacture or carrier won’t release updates is to stop sales of newer hardware from being cannibalized.
As we S^3 1st& 2nd gen hardcore see it, we have support until 2016. Even after I grab a 808, I’m still going to use my N8 like a mule and I want that Orange annodized Son-of-a-Bitch to run until it’s SoC turns to ash and dust out of the 2mm power Jack.

My N8 is still the best god damn camera phone and makes even the mighty One X, Nexi and iPhone 4S its bitches.

    • Mike says:

I agree with what you say… and I can concur that My N8′s camera its much better than my wife’s Iphone 4s (in low light you cant even compare)..Too bad my lumia 900 camera is way disappointing.

    • Grendell says:

      +1
At current prices, the N8 is actually the new “entry level” camera for Nokia. FP1 would go a long way to not only continue adding goodwill for existing customers but may also pull in more sales. And Nokia needs more sales.

      • JGrove303 says:

        And +1 to that.

A very good point on the entry level pricepoint and goodwill.

I’d like to add, my clumsy self has dumped, dropped and sent my N8 flipping 720s through the air countless times. Embarrassing really. But othe than some minor impact marks on the end caps and scraps + dings to screen bezel (which i’ve found be be much softer than the chassis) the Orange Nassau N8 is in fine form and doesn’t miss a beat. I would trust it in an adolesent’s hand to last. Impacts that surly would have crumble the front and back of a iPhone ans crack the Super AMOLED of a Galaxy.
Unibody done right. Though I imagine the N9/Lumia chassis to look damn fine after tumbling down a gravel pit. Add the 808 in there too

        • zymesh says:

n8 is pretty sturdy mine has a lot of scrapes and bumbps. Top cap cover (shiny plastic part) flew off and got cracked. im now missing a piece of it lol. Camera button bezel has a major bump, the silvery side of the camera button to housing looks ugly XD. i want to replace the housing costs around 3.5k php i think to replace the whole housing and they need to take it to their home base for a week or so. Maybe when i get the 808 i can have it repaired.
