Nokia 808 PureView in USA for 666.50USD (425GBP/532EUR)

| May 27, 2012 | 42 Replies

This seems to be rather well priced. I don’t know if taxes will appear after it.

US based retailer, Negri Electronics has a listing for the Nokia 808 PureView for 666.50USD.

https://negrielectronics.com/nokia-808-pureview-unlocked-white.html

Quite a good price I think. That makes it equivalent to 425GBP/532EUR

Oh there’s also an Expansys listing but it’s more expensive.

Cheers Poosana for the tip!

Makes me wonder if it has official Nokia warranty, because if none, then we can sell to the USA for probably a lot less. For that matter, anyone from Mexico can sell it for a lot less, too.

    • Paul Grenfell says:

682.7832 AUD.. Thats about what we expected.. maybe $30 cheaper ..

      • steelicon says:

We have a HK and Sg supplier here ready to deploy. Where are you getting yours? Really sucks that Nokia Au and NZ are not considering Nokia 808 PV.

    • Aliqudsi says:

Actually pretty sure that the warranty isn’t international in the first place- only from the country of origin.

    • stylinred says:

based on me requesting warranty work on my N8 from Nokia; I was told that I should get Nokia Canada to cover my phone even though I purchased my N8 from the UK so supposedly its covered by Nokia regardless

  2. n says:

now we know Nokia USA is evil.

  3. simrat says:

Who’s gonna buy @ that price

  4. twig says:

Not nokiausa, but perhaps this retailer. Lol.

My guess it will show up at Amazon under $600.

  5. James says:

    Yeah…..
But what’s STILL not clear, is if this will be official/local-stock.
    i.e. US warranty.

    • James says:

[is if "there" will be official/local-stock.]

Earlier rumours insinuated that possibility, but it’s looking less likely it seems.

  6. stylinred says:

you can get the phone in western Canada from HK/China/Singapore stock for $685cad

    • Deep Space Bar says:

Really, that price isn’t bad at all
      and how fast

      • stylinred says:

there’s no ETA that i can see on their website its just simple a pre-order

they’re more storefront than an online company but you can check out mobiledna < its a facebook page

  7. Just Visiting says:

Which is still too much for this device. The asking price for the N8 was $549 initially, then dropped to $489, which was way more than I was willing to pay. I paid $300 for my N8, new, last June and would not have paid more than $300 for it. I suspect the 808 will not see a significant drop in price for at least a year, going by Nokia’s pricing history.

    • Lord US says:

Yeah, 300$ would be a fair price for the 808. It’s the price the camera is worth. I wouldn’t pay much for the rest on the device and some may even think that havin the Symbian on it would make the it a sub 300$ camera.

I bet it would sell much better without the Symbian or the phone functionality. Sure, if it didn’t have Symbian and mobile phone then it could have a real optical zoom which would make it a real winner. Now we have to deal with the simulated zoom which prevents the usage of the 38 Mpix for anything else but cropping the original image.

      • shallow ocean shoal says:

How did you arrive at $300? Seems rather arbitrary and is lowballing the amount of R&D

      • Dave² says:

You have the options of switching to full resolution mode which lets you choose 36MP (16:9) and 38MP (4:3), nothing is preventing you from capturing an image in 38MP resolution.
With out Symbian and phone functionality you get just another camera. How can it sell better?

On the other hand, I find 550-650 USD to be the sweet spot at release.

        • Lord US says:

Some people think that the 808 is another camera and they are hesitating buying it only for three reasons.

The lack of optical zoom makes it effectively an camera with a small sensor and no PureView effect. That is, if you want to use zooming for pictures.

The second problem is the Symbian having it’s reputation. People think Symbian is a pile of crap and they don’t want to risk it.

If it’s a mobile phone, you just feel that you should use it as a one. If it weren’t the threshold of getting one would be lower because people wouldn’t feel they should replace trheir current phone with it.

It’s also a bit too big to be a mobile phone. It’s easier to justify buying a bit bigger camera but getting a big phone to replace the small one, it’s just wrong.

The last one is the price. It’s just too expensive because getting one should be a bargain.

      • JGrove303 says:

…..what? Dude, have even bothered to try using Nokia Belle? Where can you buy a 41MP Carl Zeiss equipped camera that produces zero distortion at full zoom for under $700? And does it have a complete suite of connectivity to upload and share directly with social networks? Can that camera provide all the function and tools like editing on the fly those capture photos and videos, or recording at ear drum ripping sound levels with extreme clarity and reproductio, then output that signal in Dolby Surround?
        No?

THEN STFU & GTFO!!!! This is Nokia Town, bitch, and if you can’t respect the hard work, research and development put into this great device, then kiss off!

        • Lord US says:

You are talking about 41 MP images with a zoom? Yeah, sure, there is no distortion in the zoom because with that resolution there is no zoom. Actually you can’t even take a 41 MP image. It’s the sensor. It doesn’t mean you can use all the pixels for one image.

But hey, if you wanna use the zoom, the 808 can only take about 5 MP images. And while you zoom with those 5 MP , you lose the PureView effect. While zooming you lose also the huge sensor because you can use only about 15% of the sensor to produce the image. And the zoom is only 3x and really only 5 MP.

Now where can I buy a camera capable of taking 5 MP images with a 3x zoom with a small sensor? Thats what it is all about when you use the cropping zalled zooming in the 808. And really, if you are into taking pictures with a zoom, 5 MP and 3x shouldn’t be even close to that 700$.

About the Belle. If people just leave a phone without buying if just because it’s powered by Symbian Belle, it’s a problem. People have been hating Symbian for years. One handset with a great camera without a real zoom is not gonna make it.

Sorry, but this is not enough for this price. Not with Symbian and not without a real zoom.

          • Paul says:

Another moron who has never even used Symbian

            • Lord US says:

You didn’t get it? If people dislike Symbian it will be left on the shelves. Nokia has been destroying Symbian reputation for years before they even considered getting Elop to do what he did. Symbian is considered a crappy OS and it just kills the sales. If this device had Android it would sell far better.

Sure, the 808 has a great camera but what it comes to some ignorant average user, they just look how the pictures look on the device. While the camera is great the display in 808 is crap and that’s it. Having a great camera won’t help the sales if the rest of the phone is substandard or low end.

Browser is really another issue. If it’s low quality, the phone is low quality in the mind of the consumer. Please, it’s not my opinion about Belle, it’s about how the consumers feel about it.

          • Madratz says:

Put on the table an imaginary Gingerbread Android with PureView & the Belle Fp1 808, I’ll pick the 808 anytime. And before u accuse me of having not tried Android, I am using the Gingerbread on my Galaxy Tab that I’m typing this on and I believe Belle Fp1 is faster and more stable than this Gingerbread 2.3.6. Sure the browser is faster and smoother on the Android but the rest of the OS is just lagging county eg. the UI, reading files etc.
Seriously.. Stop putting down Belle FP1 before u give it a try.

          • JGrove303 says:

Yes, 5MP, 3x zoom, with no noise, no distortion and fantastic low light capabilities without the need of of a backlight mucking up the color. 5 lenses and a ND filter are used ontop of this incredibles sensor. Yes, you are right about only 38MP only being useable, but that really is a negligible argument.
The PureView magic totally is in use those 3x zoom levels. It’s not 7pixels supersampled, but it is still going through those lenses, that dedicated imaging processor and the gpu with the algorithms the Dining & Co worked their asses off for 5 years to make it all work as great as it does AND fit into a pocketable smartphone (smarterphone for the jerks) that runs silky smooth on 1.4GHz of single core ARM 11 goodness while looking better (in my humble opinion) and have better features and functionality than the competition.

I see also, you avoided attacking the audio prowess I had pointed out, too.

Heh, buddy, you have got to look at a lot more than just bloggers hands-on previews and going by mere basic knowledge of cameras.

Yes, with something needing a real telephoto lense or very specialized lenses, the 808 is going to complete without the same equipment adapted to fit. And people will go to that length as they did with the N8 to make incredible photos and videos that would usually take a $10k dvr or 5 grand in body and optics to have to go back afterward and edit on Sony Vegas or Photoshop.

If Nixon was making this phone (it is a god damn phone first, optical master second) it would have a optics mount ring, Android 2.3, Galaxy SIII quality audio recording, 16MP sensor and cost $1200. THAT is something no one would buy.

            • Lord US says:

Attacking on audio? Why would I attack on this phone? There is this reality where cropping is not zooming and then there is marketing.

And yeah, there is noise when you get 5 MP with 3x zoom because the 808 reduces noise by supersampling. With that zoom there is nothing left for supersampling so you get noise. While in the 3x the 808 has an sensor size inferior to comparable compacts. You should know that it’s all about the supersampling what makes the noise go away. That’s just gone in 3x.

If this was something as great as you to tell it is, Nokia would get some serious sales from the 808. I really doubt that happening with this price and with Symbian.

          • dr_zorg says:

What else can be expected from someone with a nick “Lord US”?

Just another arrogant American, clueless and bitter.

You should be posting on Engadget.

          • Recruta says:

The zoom benefit is only one of the several benefits coming from that camera module.

And with optical elements capable of effectively resolving the whole resolution of the sensor, the 3x zoom for 5 Mp images is indeed remarkable.

Ok, the portion of the sensor at max zoom is small, but the actual aperture makes up for those smaller pixels.

            For instance:

If the aperture on the 808 was 2.8, then a similar camera with optical zoom (that typically has f5.6 at the biggest focal lenght) would need to cranck up the ISO by a factor of 4 in order to produce a similar exposure, for a given exposure time.

The actual aperture for the 808 is f2.4, which ultimately betters the 808′s advantage in this comparison. The ISO for the actual case would have to be increased by a factor of around 6! That’s quite an advantage!

That’s where the fixed aperture comes in to help avoiding high noise levels. Besides that, in full zoom the portion of the frame taken is extremely well resolved in optical terms.

you hold great regard for a personal view on price points i see… yet it took almost a year for the n8s price to drop to one in which you were willing to pay… suggesting nokia had little cause to lower it for all the time prior :P

Americans who would love a proper upgrade to their N8s. Americans like me.

Tax here is staye tax. You pay only if P.O.P. Is the same as residence. If they are in New York, I would pay no tax because I live in California. Same goes for out of country I believe.

Also, Warranty is restricted to market release as far as I know. NAM handsets must be registered in the North America market to get the Warranty.
