Possible WP8 Apollo screen resolutions
WP Central reports that the following may be the screen resolution of the new WP8 devices.
- 480×640
- 480×800 (current)
- 720×1280
- 768×1280
There’s a quick comparison above. It would be nice to have some 720p displays from a Nokia phone – if at least just for bragging rights and to defend itself from simply being ‘just’ 800×480 in 2012.
You’ll notice the aspect ratio differences. There may be more.
However the standard 800×480 (X1.6) = 1280×768
VGA is quite odd. Could it work with portrait QWERTY monoblock?

Would have expected 1280*800, and am surprised to see a 640*480, but maybe they’ll be bringing out an E6 styled phone. Good to see 16:9, my favourite aspect ratio.
I believe we’ll see the N950 or similar design reused.
1280X800 (16:10) is more favorable by me (and many consider it a standard), but I guess 16:9 is also good enough.
Maximum resolution of 1280X768 is great news IMHO – you could load some great old games with DOSBox and pick your favorite resolution (640X480, 800X600, and 1024X768).
I’d be really glad to have a Nokia WP8 device with a QWERTY keyboard, and DOSBox with Heroes of Might and Magic 3 installed with me everywhere I go… My dream is finally becoming true!
I would expect a 1920 x 1080 display. LG Electoronics already have panel for the same resoulution. Nokia should buy panel from LG Electronics. Their AH-IPS panels are better than any other manufacturs.
Could somebody explain the extra 48 px in 1280×760 resolution? Seems a bit odd to me :S
It does seem odd, it’s also a bit dubious that wpcentral would somehow have accurate, confirmed and rumors from an unnamed source that nobody else has.
But you never know.
there was a leak some moths ago with wp8 being tested and there was this 1280×768 resolution, as for the lower resolution, i suspect that’s for the low-end devices, lower than the lumia 610
Yeah there is nothing odd about 1280×768, or about 1280×820, but it’s odd that if they limit it to 4 resolutions that 2 of them would be the nearly similar 1280×720 and 1280×768
Same aspect ratio as 800×480.
Yup.
1280X768 follows the 800X480 in having a 5:3 ratio. That is the reason why MS went with that along with 1280X720(which has a 16:9 ratio).
If the core of wp8 is almost that of w8, then why would it not be capable of 1920 by 1080?
Something about this seems just a bit off, though it might be set this way for a greater range of app compatibility.
True. There may be more resolutions. I’m not quite sure how it’s going to work with WP8.
are you crazy, what do you want to do with that resolution?not even ultrabooks have this resolution. too much for a 4 plus inch screen. maybe it would work for a 5 inch plus device, but even so it’s too much. i can’t even imagine the power drainage and cost of the device with a display like this. furthermore, i don’t know of anyone who manufacturers small phone screens with this insane resolution
The new Ultrabooks from Asus have them.
Agree that that resolution on an 4in phone screen would be insane and the battery consumption.
Think the next Galaxy Note may have an Full HD screen.

“VGA is quite odd. Could it work with portrait QWERTY monoblock?”
Considering that is Nokia’s current high-res for such devices and there has been leaks of that chassis spec for WP, I’d say that is a pretty safe bet.
E6 with WP would be rather weird. Hope they make the screen size big enough. Something wider, like BB would be welcome.
Well, I guess they could flip that to 480×640 and make it same width as now and slightly less tall to accommodate a keyboard… But as I recall, the WP chassis spec leak was quite E6 in style.
BTW: It just occurred to me that horizontally wide Metro has already been seen on Xbox 360 and W8 Preview. They could just put Live Tiles and hubs into that horizontally wider format on such devices… Scroll Start screen horizontally and add landscape support to other devices at the same time?
Instead of 2×4 vertical Live Tiles, the “E6″ WP phone could have 3×2 and horizontal scrolling… Hubs might need a little redesigning though.
I don’t think WP 8 will have a similar design to Win8 & latest Xbox UI but am sure that they have redesigned the WP8 layouts to support both portrait & landscape..
I first thought that the odd resolution of 1280*768 might be for devices with no physical front buttons, but then I thought that 48 pixels is pretty much nothing in vertical resolution of 1280.
Yeah, those numbers puzzle me too. Had it been 1328×720 I’d assumed it was added res for devices without hardware keys (like the N9 vs Lumia 800 diff) but in the other direction it does seem odd.
I assume you mean 1366×768?
future blackbery devices have the same resolution.
So let me get this right, Nokia/Microsoft will be developing some touch and type phones like the E6 and the blackberry 9900??
Of course, that has been obvious for a long time. Just the details are still unknown, when, how exactly. But they will have various qwerty to full buttonless designs to complement the current type, that much seems clear based on all the leaks. Nokia is affecting the WP roadmap a lot of course – and Nokia is about form factor diversity.
Well okay awesome!!
I think the overall gist of different resolutions in the rumor is correct, but the actual resolutions or some of them of course might be wrong or still in flux.
I believe the resolutions are spot-on with the news I’ve heard over the last year. My explanations as below:
1. 800X480 – continuation of current spec devices.
2. 640X480 – Qwerty devices in the E6\BB Torch form-factors.
3. 1280X720 – Taller phones in true HD layout (16:9) & for slider Qwertys like E7.
4. 1280X768 – To fit the same chassis as the the current devices since it has the same aspect ratio of 5:3 like res 1.
Let’s just hope that support for 480×800 means that the current devices can be updated to Apollo…
That would be nice.
I think it is foolish to join the pixel density race.it was already hard to recognise small letters in 5800 years.save the money and use better cpu gpu ram is much more practical.
Foolish? It’s not just about having more pixels to make tinier fonts. We would expect the font sizes would scale to still be readable but much sharper.
Screen resolution of this degree is the new standard and Nokia would do well not to miss out on it. 800X480 isn’t bad, 800×480 however might be more sellable. The rest of the phone would need to beef up in order to drive those extra pixels fluidly.
read.
The resolution on my 800 is good but the retina display on the iPhone 4 is better for websites with a lot of detail. Beyond that it feels a bit pointless on a small screen.
Can’t wait for HD resolution WP8 Nokia’s. Not that im going to buy one, but Nokia needs this for their flagship. Imagine ClearBlack AMOLED with 1280×720 resolution…
Hope Nokia packs in 2000-2500MAh batteries in those phones…
love to see windows powered nokia mobile with 720×1280 resolution
with donna OS
hi my frdn donna is ((( symbian )))
windows powered phone is ((( windows phone )))
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh lmao
Will it be implemented in future MeeGo devices? That would be nice to have this resolutions in the N9 successor. Any roumors?
hhhhhhhhhhhhhh y the hell u need a rumor? just create one your self
:p
