Symbian UI improvements project

Was just doing a round of Nokia Developer (mainly looking for any indication of PR 1.3) and stumbled across what is known as the Symbian UI Improvements project. What it is, is a community effort to bring various ideas together, regarding ways to improve Nokia Belle (most likely FP2).
Apparently Nokia is aware of the thread, as it was one of the Featured Posts recently. There are some very nice concepts, ranging from the way you unlock a device (using gestures and patterns) to subtle changes in the homescreen (such as what is pictured above).
If you have a few design suggestion you want to share, I recommend venturing over and adding your concepts and thoughts there.

- Mogući novi izgled Nokia (Symbian) Belle?! | NokiaMob | June 9, 2012

What Nokia need to do is one thing: finish what they started.
Get all system apps (I mean *all* including Browser, Store, Social, Messaging, Email, the multimedia stuff) converted to QML for a consistent look with newer third party apps. Make sure Qt and QML components are fast and bug-free unlike now. Leave some Avkon bits lying around for legacy support but don’t try too hard. You will get an OS that looks modern, clean and fast, unlike the weird mongrel hybrid we have right now with Qt-fied Avkon bullshit.
Belle needs to be finished before we jump to Carla or Donna or Elizabeth or whatever. It would be great if all this was open sourced so community developers can work together with Nokia/Accenture engineers but then again, chances are higher that pigs will grow wings and fly
I can’t believe Pacman lost to Bradley! We all knew who was the clear winner! It was like iPhone is smarter and can multitask than a Nokia PureView.
You are hilarious!
homescreen should have animated wallpapers…..
waste of battery life and unneeded
It’s always good to have choice. Then again, there’s Android.
I cant believe how many people here keep on bad mouthing symbian.
It’s mostly frustration and anger about a beloved OS dying.
It’s mostly being promised the sky and getting dirt.
While I appreciate the UI changes, it’s a process that’s still not completed, at least on pre-FP2 handsets. Nokia have also not fixed a ton of bugs since forever and ripped out previously working features. In return we get eye candy…. not hard to get angry
dirt is not bad. its life. don’t insult it.
Notifications needs a makeover.. I like the little icons on Android 4 , shows notifications for almost everything.
I love a nice fancy UI like anyone else, but in order to enhance battery life, ive had to minimise everything and use black wallpapers etc. Im hoping the 808 will be better.
cool..
but we also need an “acitve” calendar-menue-icon like on the n9 that show’s us the todays date (number) and not just the number “12″!!
eh?
but but..the screen always has the time and date showing when locked…you only need to glance at it.
Your issue. Solved.
what we truly need is BLODDY GOOD BROWSER!
ffs Nokia…it cant be Thaaat hard can it?!
idiots..theres no excuse.
Apple’s iphone 4 on 1GHz is miles ahead in borwser speed/capability then Belle on 1.3Ghz.. Sort it!
U can’t download from iPhone’s Safari Mobile Browser, doesn’t handle some parts of Java properly & don’t handle flash.. No doubt, video files from certain sites are handled by its built-in video player but it’s still dysfunctional as a whole imo.. The latest browser on the 808 that I’m typing on right now is an increased improvement compared to the one on my N8.. Maybe it’s the increased processing power, the updated Java compatibility, the abundant ram (for a Symbian OS), bigger/more sensitive screen or a sum of all these parts are letting me enjoy the 808 on more and more each passing day(third day)
lucky guy
Hope I’ll join you 808 users soon!
Little bit off topic but jay did you get answers to all those questions you were supposed to ask?
Oh yeah, even just a little info on meltemi or future symbian devices?
NokiaBrowser 8.3 is missing a lot of the handy feature of 7.3, like sharing web links. The copy/paste is better in, yet options are missing on what you can do with it.
Yes, some features were removed from Symbian, not ones I had used at the time, but would be nice if they were reinstated.
360° screen rota and screen rotation lock on the fly would be grand. Handy for showing photos, being able to position the 3.5mm jack or the power jack however you like.
Lets get full flash 11.3 support onboard and get all the video codecs up to spec. I’m sick of not being able to just watch a .flv at all and being able to play flash games in browser would be legit.
The S60v5 powered Sony Ericsson Vivaz had animated wallpaper that reacted to the accelerometer. Sloshing water effect. It may be a battery hog of an effect, but it is awesome looking and grabs serious attention.
How’s the speed?
The Vivaz? It had 768MHz to work with and seemed smooth for a S60v5 device. If that means anything. Had meant to pick one up before I got my N8.
Change the all apps menu and make it more accessible perhaps make it a 4*5 menu or at least allow us to scroll by holding the scroll bar
