Nokia Camera Extras Now Available in US & Canada

| June 23, 2012 | 23 Replies

This is quite surprising, within two days of announcing that the new “camera Extras Application” will be available in “the upcoming weeks” it’s now available for anyone in the  US & Canada to enjoy; word on the street is that it’ll be available for all other regions sometime in July (one more week). What’s interesting is I thought this was an improvement to the Camera app itself and not a standalone app (like creative studio) however the banner says “in marketplace” which would mean it’s just a normal appp- kind of disappointing.

I think the speed of this release really shows that Nokia are focusing on customer satisfaction for now trying desperately  to appear as the guys who aren’t screwing their customers over; and I think it’s working- We know how long it takes Nokia to get some things done (Belle & Anna Release) but customers in the US who are trying out Nokia for the first time are probably quite impressed with the speed of their actions (the 3 day fix for the data issue); hopefully this all goes to improve Nokia’s standing in the US as well as everywhere else.

Anyone get the App in the marketplace yet?

Windows Phone 7.5 is in the same boat as Symbian. Not to mention that the image quality isn’t as good as the high resolution might make you believe.

Still, back in the day, the Nokia N8 sold 4 million units in under a year, so it’s not impossible for the 808 PureView become one of the company’s bestsellers, even with all those Lumias around.

With the Microsoft deal a gamble that’s yet to pay off, with plenty of people unable to get over the way MeeGo was treated, with a market obsessed with software and apps, you’d think they’d have other things on their mind than developing what’s probably the most revolutionary technology this industry has seen for quite some time. Madness? This is Nokia.

it is installed as an app but i’m sure it is then integrated in the default camera app

This is Nokia learning from past customer loyalty abuse….but then again WP8 just happened…nevermind.

  4. Xsever says:

As mentioned above, the app is installed as a stand alone but launching the default camera app and it closing on the options icon brings up the new settings along with the old ones.

So yes it is integrated into the default camera app.

now trying desperately to appear as the guys who aren’t screwing their customers over

I think the word “trying desperately” is wrong though, I’d put it more like “executing meticulously”.

It is clear that Nokia planned this long ahead. They will shower the existing devices with as much love, promotions and stuff as they possibly can. I expect many more updates or exclusive apps like they’ve now announced. This is the first wave. By spacing out over the summer months they make sure people feeling raw get something new all the time and hopefully feel good about it.

Their special relationship with Microsoft also ensured they got a moment in the spotlight to tell the whole world about it from the get-go. I am fairly sure they at least have a chance to make a difference with this approach. At least I don’t think they are desperate as much as dedicated. They will bombard us with this stuff as much as they can.

When people at T-Mobile Germany said there’d be no updates to existing devices, I said there were many in-between approaches Nokia and Microsoft might take. We are now seeing that play out. Expect to hear about WP7.8 and possible more features to it in the public as well, as any WP8 talk is left to developers until fall launch.

Nit really unlike Apples move from PPC to x86. They showered the PPC productline with enough love to keep it going for a year and kept silent about Intel after the initial developer notice… Hey, it might work.

Nokia also released Play To DLNA feature at the same time. It is already installable at least in Finland. Camera extras was found but not yet available to my Finnish Lumia 900. App links:

Note, these may require the “Tango” update for 710/800 users.

    • DesR85 says:

Well, the Play To app can be installed on my Malaysian Lumia 800 (didn’t bother to try it as I don’t see a need for it, but it does show up as installable), but not the Camera Extras app.

Probably have to wait for the Tango update to reach our shores.

  9. Xsever says:

No the Tango update is not required as I do not have it and I was able to install the app and use the features.

    • Janne says:

Some of the new apps are said to require it by official Nokia info, but also it is now trickling that some markets may already have included the groundwork in a previous firmware update. U.S. especially. Hence Camera Extensions not available outside U.S. until the new firmware is released outside U.S./China?

  10. mprince says:

Just checked, it’s not available in Canada..did you mean China instead?

  11. Hypnopottamus says:

    Ali,
I just got this app. I can confirm that even though it says it is a stand alone app, all it does is add more options to the settings within the native camera app. Thus, it is fully integrated into the camera. If you want to utilize these features, no need to open a separate app. Just use the camera and go into the settings menu.

    • Hypnopottamus says:

Oh, and to add to things, Nokia simultaneously released an official version of their Play To app. This app allows you to stream media from your phone to any DLNA capable device (tv, Xbox, desktop, laptop, etc.).

  12. Grendell says:

Any chance for these camera extras to make it to the camera in the nokia line up that actually does matter (808)?
