Ouch. Or yay? Microsoft Surface 32GB model rumour price at $1000/£648?
This is not the official price but the first indications so far on the price of the ARM based 32GB Microsoft Surface tablet.
Hopeful Nokia fans (and other fans of other manufacturers possibly dealing with W8) were wishing this was simply a reference design of sorts, something to push other manufacturers into upping their game for W8 tablets. Hence they wished it would be priced a little higher than usual. Normally for a successful tablet, it would have to be cheap. Cheaper than the iPad. If priced the same as the iPad, folks tend to just buy an iPad. (e.g. Amazon’s kindle fire tablets or ASUS’s Google Nexus 7s that are apparently sold at loss – though big gains for google eventually in gaining a new customer to sell ads to.)
For comparison, a 32GB iPad costs $599 for 2G and $729 for 3G/4G. The 64GB c3G/4G model is $829. A higher price might have been warranted in the Intel version of MS Surface, not ARM.
At $1000, that gives Nokia some room to compete. Well, should it even decide to compete in the tablet space. As of now, they’re quire focused on their phones (and thus have no excuse come fall if it sucks. It better not, dammit! The iThings are getting more tempting, especially with the med school dishing out iPads for free). I’d like a W8 tablet to try but for me, I can’t justify that price considering what else is available on the market. Hopefully Nokia delivers something great on specs, great on price. We’ve seen Nokia produce an absolutely stunning work of art with their first Windows Device, from 2009 – the Nokia Booklet 3G. But it was underpowered and overpriced and so never got anywhere. It was very nice to use and quite amazing that I wouldn’t have to see the face of a charger for a while or need to be in the vicinity of WiFi networks to get any work/blogging done.

Ouch!
I was expecting Surface Pro 128GB to cost $1000 as similarly specced MacBook Air 11 costs ~$1000.
And I was expecting Surface RT to cost ~$600.
Maybe Nokia can give us a cheaper alternative…
Look nice, but can it run with MeeGo? If yes then it could be a pair for my N9. This is serious question. I understand that Nokia is possesed by MS Windows, but I will stay with MeeGo and better software. I can buy it, however to use with MeeGo, but not any Windows. Do you have any info about? This is serious question, not any jokes.
I am with you on that… Looks nice but can it run with J2ME? If I can run my J2ME apps on it then I might consider buying it. Any info on the possibility of running my J2ME apps on it. This is serious question, not any jokes.
Can it run Symbian???
I’m serious,I’m not joking!
If it can run Symbian only then I’ll buy it. I don’t want to run Windows on this $1000 tablet.
If it can run Symbian I’m willing to pay $2000 for it!
This is serious question, not a joke!!!
It’d be nice if you can add a memory car in there.
I’d like one, but not at that price.
Sounds pretty suspicious. In the release presentation Micro said ARM will cost about as much as a similar tablet and Intel will cost about as much as a similar ultrabook. The prices could be adjusted a little but I don’t see them bumping the ARM price to ultrabooks and Intel version to high end gaming rig. I just don’t see that working out. I guess we’ll jave to wait and see.
$1000?
Um. No. Just no.
Wpcentral report the Swiss site made up the price because they are getting orders so they just went high. They admit they have not received pricing yet. Hey, its like expansys who charges $1500 for a new iPhone when they come out and some fans buy it. They play on emotions for premium pricing or there’s a sucker born every minute.

people are waking up to Microsoft’s BULLSHIT
Wow, that was a biased article. “Well, the consumer is going to hate Windows 8.” Where is the proof?
“It’s dangerous to predict the decline of Windows. People have been doing it for years and it’s amounted to nothing”
So have they done with apple too, even more so the last year.
“Apple is at the top of its game. And, if the critics are even half-right, Microsoft is at the bottom of its game.”
This was again the opposite to the rest, if apple is on the top it means they will not grow anymore, and if microsoft is at the bottom they can only grow..
actually it could make sense. If MS makes the best tablet with W8 money can buy, there will still be lot of people who just need to get it because it is the best(or most expensive, like macbookpro buyers) (and they have the money). That way OEMs can make cheaper tablets for regular users just like before, so there will be no crash with the OEMs
The Swedish retailer has already clarified the (what I thought was obvious) point that the price is just a place holder and that they have no information on what the actual retail price will be. Anyone preordering will get reimbursed for the price difference.
