Nokia Nostalgia: Nokia 7650

| August 13, 2012 | 19 Replies

We’re looking at another phone in our short  series. This one is the Nokia 7650, a powerhouse of a Symbian Series 60 phone when it was first available. Note, the little ball thing seems to have broken off this unit. Shame as this is what people get to see at Nokia House.

This was one of the first phones ever with a camera built in. One of the first with colour screens. And also super powerful with Symbian on board. I remember being in utter awe of this phone and seeing my aunt with one (she always had the latest Nokia phones) I was mesmerised. Being from the future, this phone famously starred in Minority Report.

The screen was massive at the time. I remember having dreams about owning a phone with a camera. I remember reading about how amazing this phone was and eyeing up the TV remote control app that was possible with this phone.

Quick Quiz:

  • Without searching/looking it up, what’s the processor clocked at on the 7650?
  • RAM
  • Release date?
  • Display resolution?

Here’s some classic ads for the Nokia 7650.

This one goes down in mobile history as one of the iconic phone ads. They really captured the point about the uniqueness in taking photos in mobile. And to this day, Nokia is still the leader in imaging.

and I’m surprised that nokia used to make good ads back in the day

      • Jay Montano says:

This is why I get frustrated when Nokia makes crap ads now knowing they used to understand who the market was and how to deliver the right information. They went some artsy farsty vague make no sense direction and they’ve been doing so for the past 4 or so years now.

Had this in summer 2002 when it came out! I was 15 years old and remember my friends’ faces when I pulled it out of my pocket!:D I think the feeling 7650 got me when I opened that box is never going to be repeated! This was the true revolution back then! No quad or hexa core can bring it, because it is logical step now, but back then it was magical!;)

  5. Peter says:

I didn’t own this Nokia but went for the Nokia 3650 instead, with a 16mb sd card. After getting used to the round keyboard it turned out to be a gem!

  6. Viipottaja says:

Wow, the first ad is a pretty impressive production.

Actually, the latter one looks a lot like some of the very recent ones, e.g some of those Nokia India Lumia ads.

  7. poiman says:

I found this phone one of the ugliest ever made, so I didn’t buy it. 3650 was also very ugly and the keyboard was just stupid. Got better with 3660 but then 6600 arrived! Thank god it did, I loved my 6600!!

Yes really quality of nokia ad suckx big tym when i was in school i was so excited to see the 2600 and 6600 ad… there used to be a cool n95 ad too when i was in college the jealous computer banners all around new delhi CP stores…

i was so proud of my dad’s communicator… really those days were great.. when i got the 3230 i was the talk of my class LOL great days.. Just do it Nokia seriously Jay people like u who are so influential sud bombard the inbox of the dull nokia marketing guys wid ideas … the agencies they hire r trying to be over creative and finally no message gets across.. the lumia 800 ads in india believe me were 50 pc good with out the brand ambassador and when they used her in the ads those were non sense…

    Quiz

7650 has 8MB RAM. I remember serching stuff for my N-Gage and seing how people had problems with not enough RAM (N-Gage has 16 btw :p) Display res is 176×208. CPU is clocked @ 70-80MHz something. Release date… I don’t know the actual date but they started selling 7650 in Q1 2003 I think.

off to GSM arena for CPU and release date :p

    • Max says:

CPU is 104 MHz :\ I can’t find a release date tho. MobileReview has a review dated June 2002 but the guy reviewing phones there always gets them waaay before the actual release date.. so idk

Btw my unkle had a 7650 back then.
And I still have my N-Gage, somewhere :p
