don’t know why I am feeling Anti Nokia for the first time…not bcos m holding a Atrix 2 right now but…Nokia literally killed every thing for this…they bought and killed Smarterphone then Meltemi…Meego…now I badly want someone to kill this S40 crap…

  2. FireDragon says:

Asha series is good for their own range and market, just don’t put them against Androids or there will be no chance since MARKET, or CONSUMERS, or the BUYERS will not take how Nokia is thinking they might.

The problem is, there is really nothing left in Nokia to go against Androids, cheap or high-end. The people who are leaning toward Androids are simply seeing 1.ANDROID the name that is on the TOP, 2.Tons of Apps, doesn’t matter if the cheap handset they will get will be able to run or not and Design & Price range.

  3. MeeGo says:

Nokia Asha is getting beat by cheap Androids such as Samsung Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y Duos! Wake up Nokia!

    • Viipottaja says:

Well, their Q2 feature phones sale numbers were up so let’s wait and see how they will do.

Still, I too am much more worried about Nokia’s low end than the top end.

      • Viipottaja says:

An anecdotal report claims 305s sold out in several Delhi locations (see my tip post). Hope it is true more broadly, for Nokia’s sake. :)

        • Vikas Patidar says:

I guess 305 will be a hit phone indeed. It’s good at price and in India the name Nokia is enough for such Dual SIM models.

          • anonimus says:

In Lucknow, India…..305 is a big hit……nd only few retailers have stocks……..some of them are increased the cost of the phone upto 400-500 Rs…..

          • anonimus says:

In Lucknow, India…..305 is a big hit……nd only few retailers have stocks……..some of them are asking upto 400-500 INR extra…

            • manu says:

3 of my friends have bought 305 as there second phone, its not that good especially touch but considering price.but the price factor wont help 311 considering galaxy pocket cost lesser and Lg L3 a much better device just 400-500rs up.

        • Prasenjit Singh Bist says:

its true there is huge traction for asha even for asha 311 although there is no pre booking… initial reports say there’s huge enquiry and excitement….

    • exsanguine says:

The same android store that has 450,000 dead apps that haven’t been downloaded?

yeah, the same old and tired ‘app’ story we’ve all heard before that means absolutely nothing.

    • Prasenjit Singh Bist says:

never seen a looser like u and u call ur self a nokia fan u r a perfect troll. for information Nokia asha is gaining huge sales traction…

      • Luisito says:

why so agressive toward someone emiting his opinion… for me Asha phones are right, but it you put it against Android devices, guess which one will pick the average joe, more and more people are waiting for “smartphones”… And there is were Nokia’ s problem start

  4. Vikas Patidar says:

If Nokia will not bring multitasking to those 1GHz specs Asha phones then complete game is now over in low end segment. I believe may be they are working hard to make it happen for the end users but it’s too late now.

Anybody who’s saying that S40 is crap. May be he/she has never used S40 phones. There is no other simplest and user friendly OS for feature phones exist on this earth other than S40.

    • jiipee says:

My friend who used to work on S40/S60 until 2005 claims that a simple iPhone/WP7 multitasking should be relatively easy to build in S40. Real-time Maemo multitasking on the other hand is more or less impossible.

  5. Prasenjit Singh Bist says:

problem is taht some folks here are high on drugs and illussion and they simply think every one thinks their way and they want to pay the world in their colors..

Asha touch opens up a new avatar of series40 never thought never seen…
it will be huuuge huuuge success. if people get good features build fancy UI and good apps the targeted asha audience give a fuck to 4500000 apps.. crap

  6. PuppyMonster says:

I was really angry about that decision too. but just yesterday, my pops bought an asha 305. I was really surprised on s40′s improvement. it’s really great. despite of the reviews that the phone lags often, it’s not. almost everything is great, sound quality, built, for a price so cheap. My samsung galaxy y is no match for loading apps. although asha’s are just javas. and the signal reception is just perfect.

though i’m hurt that s40 remained and meego, meltemi, symbian got killed, as a true nokia fan, WOW is all i can say. but the question is, why would they make s40 smarter if they can just have any smarter os around?

    • twig says:

You also have something that Android users never talk about, android malware. There is so much malware coming at Android it is called a malware pandemic. How could a pandemic be coming straight at you and yet android users remain blind to it? Yes, your android will slow down to a crawl and your user info. used by someone far away. I’ll take the 311 over the Sammie 3 for that reason.

      • Luisito says:

I don’t feel su much love for Droids, but that’s what happend when you become popular, In the case (I doubt that happend) Windows Phone becomes popular you will see malware headed to it, you can bet it…

        • Dave says:

No, you won’t, and for very simple reasons.

For example, a Windows Phone app can not send an SMS. All it can do, is create the “send SMS” form, populate it for you, but you, the user, has to click send (or “yes” or whatever the question is). This rules out certain kinds of apps, some of which completely valid and useful, but also prevents some solitaire clone sms-ing some expensive 1-800 number (yes this has happend on Android) at your expense. Yes, the Play store thing told you it wants SMS permissions, but nobody reads those and just clicks “install”.

Another example, on Android, an application without _any_ permissions, that’s NO permissions, can still read your entire SD card, all files on it, all media, audio, all your pictures, everything, and (this was the topic of some article a while back) manage to send it over the network.

There is a very real reason why Windows Phone (and also Metro tablet apps) is designed the way it is, and it’s not a game of fanboys claiming one or the other is better, or that malware can happen to anyone. Malware on Android is possible because of the things an application is allowed to do by design, malware on windows phone is much harder because they have very carefully sandboxed anything that could aid malware. For proper malware on WP you need to break the sandbox, which is a whole different level of hacking. Not impossible, of course, but a different game than doing sneaky things in the background.

          • Luisito says:

have you ever know the term social engineering???….
that’s the way most Android malware work… and thats the way malware work on iOS… hackers will find their way, they always do

            • Dave says:

Do you have an example ? Only slightly snarky, and mostly actually interested in a good example.

I agree for example that a kid’s application which has $99 in-app purchases is malware, and the authors should be hung by their balls (and Apple should be held responsible for what are so very obviously scam apps, OR stop claiming they care about family values and porn is evil and so on), and here the sandboxing makes no difference (though one can still do a better job than iOS does atm).

Most Android malware info I can find is about background agents, using network/phone/sms secretly, snooping the device, snooping the network, etc, none of which are normal application permissions on WP.

              So, example ?

              • arts says:

                so far you are winning.

              • Luisito says:

If you ask me for a particular app or code… I don’t remember, but it you’re so aware of your own security most probably is that you have rad abour it, and receive some E-mails that try to appeal to your Carity sense for giving some pennies… but this has been happening in all platform, some years ago trend micro discovered one of these kinds of apps in China, affecting Symbian devices, the apps basicallly was a Baidou app that ask you leting it acces you addressbook, once you granted it, the apps then send all your addressbook to someone, and the need day you were receiving a lot of spam e-mails.

Of course if you feel right with the limitations of the Windows Phone way of being a “smartphone”, well it’s your choice, but it you’re a badass DIY guy, you will feel chained, constrained, Windows Phone nor iOS isn’t your best platform for working… And that’s my main reason againg this “strategy”, I want my Nokia, but I want it open and badass (Maemo are you there???)…

Finally, IF the main reason for chosing an OS were security, then Windows should be death, but hey, its still the most selling OS (despite if you wanna another thing), people chose its poison for a wide array of reason, and the more options you give to them, the more likely they will buy YOUR poison, and if a person is moron enought to fall to not be cautious when something too good is happening, then don’t let them be near of a computer

    • Vikas Patidar says:

Meltimi killed because they want to inherit the existing ecosystem and new Asha Touch phones are built on the top of the S40 OS. So it’s good that if they bring new devices in market then their trusted developer partners can port their existing apps very quickly for these platforms. I don’t see any point of creating another ecosystem on the low end when company is hitting it’s cash at bottom lines.

      • lordstar says:

That may be one factor in the decision to stop development for Meltemi, it would make sense since Nokia wouldn’t support N9 and symbian in the long run. Still, they have to find a way to make Asha Touch as competitive as possible.

  7. lordstar says:

I think Nokia really needs to rebrand the series 40 name. Asha touch is a start but a lot of people associate the series 40 os for feature phones that’s why the new range of asha touch devices may still be considered basic or dumbphones.

An overhaul is needed, a change of perspective. I agree, asha has a lot of potential, just present it to the market effectively. I want more highly specced capacitive asha touch devices. Prasenjit, will I be disappointed come Nokia World?

    • Viipottaja says:

Yeah, I see the point but on the other hand never knew Nokia’s feature phones had an OS called S40, and now that Asha brand is being emphasized, even fever do. :)

    • Vikas Patidar says:

They aren’t saying that these are the S40 phones. I agree they are calling it Asha Touch, but It’s upto bloggers and journalists who calls it S40 and compares with others phones and call it crap against those.

What I think is they really need to do some good marketing efforts in emerging markets where they are strong enough.

    • manu says:

agreed on that they should drop the series 40 naming, also need to improve the quality of s40 apps and games.

  8. manu says:

ya but still as many had told an avg joe would prefer an android device over asha.everyone nowadays would like to own a smartphone.

    • Viipottaja says:

well, there are a billion people in your country alone (with some 300+ million middle class) so hopefully there will be at least a few million people left for Asha as well. :)

      • viktor von d. says:

problem is that people who buy cheap androids with no wifi, weak processors and ram, don’t download to many apps,a nd the ones they download are always basic ones and free. and even then they run like shit on the weak hardware. that is why people still prefer these dumb featurephones. cause they can do everything out of the box, they have a cool design and better materials than the cheap androids.
anyways i’m hopin that by next year they will add multitasking to the platform and revamp the ui again. cause i’m guessing next year asha will all have 1 ghz processor minimum and a bigger touchscreen or higher resolution so it will become a low end smartphone not feature rich dumbphone. this way they will own the segments from 30 dollar phones to 130 dollars with asha, and the rest with wp.
nokia world should be interesting this year and the next

        • manu says:

i dont know why you guys are not understanding it how many times ive told android is what it is trending in india now.everyone irrespective of their budget would like to own an android phone.nokia marketshare and popularity is nose diving day by day coz they dont make android handset most nokia exclusive channels and stores have now became samsung ones.nokia and its windowsphone is one of the biggest disaster ever in india even N97 was a bigger hit and customer satisfaction.what nokia left is some sale for their dual sim models below 5000rs.if anyone has a budgetover 5000 they would save some more for a good branded android hanset like galaxy y or htc explorer and very recently launched LG L3 and cheapest samsung android device galaxy pocket is gaining good traction in the market

          • manu says:

*the things ive told are pretty much same in other developing nations also not just india,(where nokia believes asha can to take on low end droids.p;)

          • manu says:

            • viktor von d. says:

except people who buy this cheaper asha phones can’t afford even the cheapest android. it seems you don’t understand this. and this discussion isn’t about wp but about s40. 2 different things
