Video: Nokia City Lens for Nokia Lumia: Augmented Reality Browser

| September 10, 2012 | 27 Replies

Here’s a new video from Nokia. I’m bandwidth limited (on a quick break on mobile), the loading screen is stuck. I guess they’re demoing Nokia City Lens.

Nokia City Lens http://nokia.ly/QeAOiK instantly connects you to all of the places you’re looking for—and even more importantly—gets you there exactly when and how you want to. Now available on Windows Phone Marketplace.

Just landed in town and looking for a good restaurant? Interested in checking out the local museum or theater? Time to hit the nearest transit station to catch a ride uptown? No longer is finding your chosen destination a hassle—whether you’re in a new city or your hometown.

Now you can simply launch Nokia City Lens on your phone to easily find all the places you want to go. Nokia City Lens instantly reveals what you’re looking for on your phone’s camera display, no matter if it’s down the street or just around the corner.

You simply tap your chosen destination on your screen to conveniently access walking directions, make a reservation, or learn more detailed information about the locale.

    almost identical to the Symbian version

    This is awesome and more practical than talking to your phone with Siri. Google Glasses is cooler but that’s future stuff whereas augmented reality with City Lens is here right now.

    I can imagine going to a new city on a business trip, then going out in the evening. Where should I go? Which places are having special offers on food or shows? The combination of the augmented reality camera view, overhead map view and guide info with live content – all in one app – lets me discover all this easily. Previously I used Nokia Maps combined with Guides but that’s not as integrated or as intuitive as City Lens.

    Looks like we’ll see more tourists walking around while looking at their phone camera rather than looking out for traffic…

    Its actually a good video showing city lens properly.

    Chk this out .. Demo on Lumia 920 :)
    Jay you can update the post.

    Have tried the N9 version and the windows phone version. Both work great though the cool thing about the WP version is whenever you rotate your phone to portrait mode it automatically switches from augmented reality mode to the nearby list mode.

      @M

      Is that the only difference between the WP & Harmattan versions?
      I’d love to use this, but the most frustrating thing is that most of the cities they’ve focused on, are cities where the N9 wasn’t released!
      (at least not officially)
      Is the N9 version heaps buggier than the WP version?

      Thanks.

      • M says:

        Each fit into each other’s design languages (Tiles/WP version and Squicles/N9 version). The N9 version works better than I even remembered matching the Windows Phone in speed and crispness. The differences are that instead of turning to portrait there’s an icon on screen to change to nearby mode and back and also where the WP version locations overlap as you rotate and are a bit transparent to allow you to see precisely where they are, the N9 version’s are solid black stacked on and side by side with each other.

        The N9 version allows you to click on locations, then give you an option to either call it, nokia map it, walk to it, drive, to it, share it and has a little working compass in the options inlay. The problem with the N9 version compared to the WP version is how it interacts with the other apps. Its a bit slower to open the Phone and Messaging apps compared to WP and can be incredibly slow at times to open with Maps and Drive. Sometimes its a bit hit and miss with opening apps. Works good in app but has trouble playing with others. Hope that helps a bit.

          @M

          Thank-you very much for that in-depth explanation!
          Sounds roughly as good as the WP app on-balance…
          Here’s to hoping they expand the countries/cities they support, ATM it’s a joke!

      • Anthony says:

        City Lens works not only in specific cities, don’t mess it up with City Scenes.

        Tried City Lens on N8 and N9, contains really great features and works fine.
        But I think there’s no further development for Symbian and Meego versions, it’s all Lumia now.

        Sad but true

        • Nathan says:

          @Anthony

          Thanks for confirming that it works fine as far as you can tell…
          Hopefully there will be at least another 6-mth more development.
          Look at City Scene, they’re still actively updating it for the N9 until very recently.

          • Nathan says:

            Actually City Lens they don’t seem to have updated it since January…
            So I guess they decided to stop supporting the N9 just 3mth after arrived on shelves, why am I not surprised :-(

  6. Carbontubby says:

    Can anyone get this to work on Belle Refresh or FP1? It installs on my updated E7 but it hangs on the “Welcome to Nokia City Lens” screen.

  7. Anders81 says:

    I remember showing this app on my E7 maybe two years ago to my colleague with an HTC and he was amazed. There is a real point about Elop saying that there are gems at Nokia which have difficulty in becoming actual hits.
    Another this type of situation was when I showed the Nokia 3D maps to the same colleague, but this opportunity was lost due to Apple buying that company who made it together with Nokia.. A real shame since day after tomorrow that is going to be the biggest thing in the whole universe after i5 has been launched.
    I have had already some time City Lense (Nokia City Opas Beta) on my L800 and it has been fun to use occasionally.

    • viktor von d. says:

      i was wondering about that. can nokia still use the solutions from that company,or apple is keeping it to itself. eitherway i guess there is a contract between them and nokia that hasn’t expired yet

      • Anders81 says:

        Well, the Nokia 3D maps are still alive but I haven`t seen any big progress myself in some time. It is also difficult to see the Nokia 3D maps work on a smartphone at their current status since they are quite slow on my 1year old high spec desk top. The above mentioned are not the only things that they should have already put out… There are the radar function (app developers could find a million ways to use it), picture measurement ie. you can take a picture of an object and can see the measurements right away (this would have been very usefull for me), extremely fast data transfer demoed with the N9 (I was expecting this with L920 & L820 but I am not sure do they have it or not)+many more “un polished gems” just waiting for the competitor to pick em up.

  8. ms.nokia says:

    the video is great at showcasing what nokia city lens can do, and the app is amazing, beats anything that apple or google have,

  9. Mr.Nokia says:

    Anyone know where I can get that Nokia jacket? <.<
