NokConv: Nokia Lumia 820 comes out of its shell

| September 17, 2012 | 22 Replies

Nokia Conversations have posted up a nice article on the innovation in the Lumia 820′s interchangeable shell. Besides the fact these shells are interchangeable, whilst still having a premium feel, they can be swapped to enhance the device. Take a look at the Charging Shell. Swap the original shell, for one with wireless charging compatibility, and now you have an added feature; wireless charging.

The post also details a “ruggedised” shell. I never knew about these before the post. This is something awesome, as a lot of the time, getting cases for your device to make them stronger, often makes them extremely thick and ugly. These still have the vibrant colours many fans like.

The shells are set to be available upon the Lumia 820′s launch.

Microsoft is opening its first Windows store in Canada in Toronto and for the Holidays they will be opening temporary stores across the nation Im eager to see these Lumias and their new tablets

I wouldn’t get them for myself but I’d love to play with some and perhaps get one for my father

I think the changeable cases are both nice and stupid. Im sure cost was a factor to keep certain features out of the 820 but it would be nice if they offered a line of cases with all the features in 1 so a person wouldn’t have to switch cases all the time

That just looks so sexy! kudos Nokia!

920 takes that potential cake here too, IMO.

I see 100% water proof covers for 920, and that super sensitive touch screen makes it still usable, lol. Sweet.
Worried about overheating? Then just leave it submerged…

The rugged case is awesome. It just sucks that you have to buy the wireless charging shell separately I thought that it was the normal shell already.

  5. Banderpop says:

I wonder how far shell enhancements can be taken?

    Here’s some other ideas:

    Keyboard shell
    Game controller shell
    Rear touch-pad shell
Stereo speakers + disco lights shell
    PureView Shell
    Kinect Shell
    Tripod/stabilsation shell

instead of selling real phones they are busy showing us cases? wtf is wrong with Nokia? Apple just sold 2million iPhone4s in a day.. it could have been Lumias

    • rinslowe says:

      Cheap shot,

      Totally irrelevant…

      • jr says:

why is it irrelevant? they havent started sellimng the phones yet but they want to talk about covers ? does this make any sense to you Are they telling people to get the covers before the phone ?

        • Pdexter says:

Neither can Samsung sell their phones or announce availability because it’s on MS hands. WP8 hasn’t even been released yet, neither is there SDK out.

And anyways there’s enough of rumors out there about the November 2 release.

Why would they not show these covers? Don’t really get your reasoning. Look great to me and exactly something Nokia should have done to take all out of those replaceable covers,

          • jr says:

AM not saying they are not great but it makes no sense to talk about an accessory of a product when the actual product cannot be bought. Whats the point.. its like saying.. hey the Lumia 820 has some great covers but we cant tell you when it will ship or how much it will cost but in the mean time enjoy the beauty of the covers. If you talk about a product it should be something you are ready to sell .. After all these Nokia didn’t learn a thing? If you are not ready don’t show it until you are.

            • Flava says:

It’s totally sensible talking about choices of accesories for your future phone :-|

Actually that’s a good move from Nokia, so you can decide which Lumia you would buy, or if you already decided to pick Lumia 820, you’ll get more excited of it because you know you can customize your phone with another kind of cool shells. Nokia just showed us that 820 has its own strong point againts 920.

              Make sense enough?

  7. Antero says:

I feel like to only shortcoming of this phone is the rather low resolution. With 1280×720/768 this would be a rather OK phone for those who don’t care about the camera.

    • Banderpop says:

For me, the display goes in favour of the 820. 720p or higher on a pocket sized device doesn’t serve any practical purpose. At least with the 820′s AMOLED screen, there’s a chance that it might show a clock and notifications while in standby mode. Although so far there has been no WP8 announcement to say that this is possible.

Alas, I do care about the camera, so would have to pick the 920 if choosing between the two.

  8. FireDragon says:

Interesting take with 820. I have seen people are crazy about those changeable cases, in old old Nokia models.

  9. Nokia covers says:

Cool stuff, but how will it be able to compete with the Android and iOS devices. I had c6-01. It did not sell well as the Android market and iOs did not leave any resale market for Nokia sets.

    Regards

How does the phone look without those shells..? Are they just optional? Or definitely required for volume rocker and shutter button to work? It’ll be awesome if they are optional as it’ll be a great deal for ppl who wants a slimmer phone!!
