Something many Lumia owners have been talking about lately is the new firmware update that brings Nokia’s Storage Check app. Over at Beta Labs, they’ve extended the capability of this app. One of the best features, in my opinion, is the ability to now move Maps to an SD Card (where SD Cards are present). This is a great option for people like myself, who have a Lumia 820, needing as much space as you can for Apps (until they allow you to install apps on SD Cards).

Note, you’ll need the 1308 update or higher!

Here’s what the Beta Labs site has to say about the new app.

Lumia Storage Check beta can be used to show a detailed breakdown of the phone memory usage and do something about it. The app shows you an overview and details on the second page, including space taken by:

  • Apps – with app data included and sorted by size on further detail page
  • NEW: Maps – you can now manage maps from here and store them on SD card if your device has one
  • Temporary files – temp files created by the system, some of which can be deleted with the
  • Photos – includes also videos you are shooting with the camera
  • Music+Videos – videos here refers to side-loaded vidoes
  • Office docs (including OneNote notebooks, copies of docs accessed from SharePoint and SkyDrive)
  • Email+contacts
  • Ringtones
  • System (fixed, usually 1.9 GB)
  • Other (this includes stuff that user has little control over)

Edit: the new feature to separate out space taken by Videos is depenendent on newer enabler components, which are not yet available.

Minimum firmware required

Check your firmware version from ‘settings – about phone – more information’, under the ‘Firmware revision number’ and see below if the preconditions for this app are met:

  • Lumia 820 or Lumia 920: 1232.5957.1308.0000 and higher
  • Lumia 920T: 2041.0009.1308.1002 and higher
  • Lumia 520, Lumia 620 or Lumia 720: 1030.6407.1308.0000 and higher
