“Nokia Lumia Amber” Arriving this Summer to All Nokia WP8 (Updated)

| May 14, 2013 | 31 Replies

Nokia have just announced that a future update coming to all WP8 Lumia devices will be receiving a new software update in the summer called Nokia Lumia Amber. Amber will debut on the Lumia 925 with Smart Camera and soon following on other WP8 devices.

According to the verge this update will come packaged with the GDR2 update which will also bring an activation to the FM transmitter:

Other features, including some camera improvements, will also be made available with the amber update. The Lumia 925 includes double-tap to wake support, and The Verge understands that the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 will be updated to support this upcoming feature.

According to the official Windows phone Blog the update will also bring hundreds of small improvements including “datasense” being available to more carriers and phones:

The new update, which is expected to start rolling out to existing Windows Phone 8 phones later this summer, brings back support for FM radio (we heard you!) and makes the Data Sense feature of Windows Phone 8 available for more carriers to offer. The update also makes it easier to select, download, and pin tunes in Xbox Music and improves the accuracy of song info and other metadata—something I know music fans will appreciate. (FM Radio and Data Sense availability depend on your phone model and carrier.)

The update includes hundreds of other small quality improvements. One final one worth highlighting, as we announced earlier, is that the update also ensures Windows Phone continues to work with Google services by adding support for the company’s newest sync protocols—CalDAV and CardDAV.

    you mean receiver.

    • My bad….

      • AJ

its ok.. you can stil edit that post 🙂

  • Matt Leech

Sorry, but the article says FM Radio will be enabled, not FM Transmitter.

  • Hanif

heard lumia 620 doesn’t have an FM radio, Is that true.

    • feifei

if 620 doesn’t has FM radio, then the same goes to 520 and 720 as well b’coz they are all using one same SoC “MSM8227” except that if they equipped with standalone FM chip……a good news to current lumia holders and bad news for those with the lowest end S4 cpu equipped lumias……

      • Hanif

Not sure about the stand alone fm chip. But most blog says Lumia 620 won’t get the fm radio. Feeling screwed. 😞

  • ali, do you mean FM radio, not Fm-Transmitter?

No double tap to wake up for my Nokia Lumia 720? That tap to wake up needs 1gig ram?

    • the asha 501 can with 64mb of ram

      • Rat Kutti

yes! the why are they leaving out the Lumia’s < than 820 🙁

So, lumia 928 wont have the GDR2?

What is msft doing? 7 months after windows phone 8 came out, not even a meaningful software update?

  • StefanP

Why is data sense operator dependant? It’s a basic feature which should be available for all users!

  • anon2

My Lumia 920 already more reliable than any android POS I’ve owned/used. These improvements are a welcome bonus.

I really hope nothing like the March server issue (Malaysian side) occur again for this update. The intended Portico update got pushed back from the end of March all the way to the end of April as a result, but at least we also got the 1308 update together with it. 😉

Come on, agent 47 can’t point a silver baller to elop’s head and demand the update?

      • DesR85

If there is a contract on him, then yes, but so far, ‘The Agency’ prefers underworld criminal king pins, diplomatic or military targets. 😛

Will the FM Radio be working without wired headset? Nokia have done it possible for a handful devixes bdfore. With built-in antenna it would be super for people using bluetooth headsets suxh as the excellent nokia essence or purity pro or other headsets of course. I have dropped wired headsets completely since i bought essence and purity pro.

come on man! you say “i have a nokia 808”, where are the news about the nokia belle fp2 that are rolling out? not one post! i maybe sound mean but you realy should call the blog “nokia windows phones blog” and not mynokiablog! nokia is not only about windows phone, first of all is about SYMBIAN AND MEEGO! i’m very tired to see all the time wp’s “that”, wp’s “this”… 10 belle fp2 updates in 2 months and no post about them…

    • Once again… as Nokia focuses on Windows Phone it’s only natural that this blogs focus shifts in the same direction, it’s not our fault that there are no new apps coming out to Symbian (worth mentioning) nor that the updates have slowed down. If you have news about a new update post a tip rather than complaining.

  • nokiaman

Would be great if it had an FM transmitter though……

  • steve

So is amber GDR2 + nokia improvements (radio, camera), or is GDR2 a separate update?
