TheRegister: New Nokia Devices? Why Not?

Quick heads up from TheRegister who talks to Dr Michael Halbherr, EVP Nkoia design who says that whilst Nokia has sold their devices and services business to MS, that doesn’t stop them from building new devices. That’s perhaps why some say MS can’t use the Nokia name for smartphones?

Nokia will still plan and ‘concept’ new devices. However, TheRegister then adds “Just don’t expect to see Nokia making phones again – or at least any time soon.”

I’m not sure if that’s their conclusion or the jist they got from Halbherr.

It would be wrong now to think about this from a phone perspective. With the cloud and the internet-of-things, we’re seeing a convergence of form factors where you do a few things well in a totally seamless way.

We will still surprise people with leading-edge hardware.

What other type of Nokia Devices could they make?

The rest of the article talks about HERE Maps. According to many past stories and discussions in our comment area, the whole NAVTEQ bit of Nokia was said to have been quite a deciding factor to Nokia going against Android  (Nokia didn’t want to let go of their maps).

The other two parts of Nokia include NSN which has been going from strength to strength, and also their ‘Advanced Technologies Group’, the latter being a great generator of intellectual property for licensing new technology.
