Nokia extends helping hands to Philippines’ Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda Recovery
Earlier this month, the Philippines was struck by the recent tragedy of Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda as it is known locally. Thousands of lives were lost, millions left homeless and vast amounts of critical infrastructure destroyed. Nokia notes that they have over 870 staff (NSN/HERE/Nokia) in the Philippines, all of whom were fortunate enough to emerge safely.
Nokia has made a donation in excess of over 250,000 EUR to the local Red Cross and Red Crescent rescue operations as well was to Oxfam for reconstruction and rehabilitation. Nokia has also donated more than 1000 mobile phones to support local communication and recovery efforts. Â Some of these handsets will be used as a makeshift radio station to assist in connecting people with their loved ones and facilitate various rescue operations.
Employees in Finland and around the world are also helping to raise funds through the Finnish Red Cross.
