Check out the updated phone app for WP8.1

The changes are quite subtle and are brought into the whole “why wasn’t this there from the start?”.

A slight shift in appearance as the dialler now includes call and save buttons within the grid as opposed to being at a bar at the bottom.

When actually placing a call there’s some minor changes to which includes a video call button. End call and the dialler shift to the bottom making their location more consistent. Hopefully being so low won’t make pressing the bing/cortana button by accident an issue.

You can set the video call depending on the app you have.

Note how calls are stored under the same account showing the number of attempts. This is useful as WP used to list every single call and attempt of that call that would end up flooding my history if I was on a busy number.

Now they still list every call, just within that contact. It tells you on the side how many attempts.

I’m not quite sure what that circle icon is on the right.

Moreover, call duration can be seen. Finally.Screen Shot 2014-04-06 at 16.51.28

And then there’s the visual speed dial. To be fair, I’d rather the long press of a digit being an option too.
