Thomas Nigro says he’s been quite silent for the past few weeks as he’s been working hard to revamp VLC which is now a universal version.

He took his time to build a great universal app. The code is cleaned and shared with WP and Windows at 90% level and have identical features (except that there currently isn’t any DLNA support (what about Miracast on Cyan with 930/1520?) though he says that might change. XAML code is pretty much the same. He’s worked on making a design that works well on phones, phablets, tablets, laptops and desktops in preparation for Windows ‘Threshold’.

In terms of performance, the app is much faster than ever before, particularly on the tablet where it’s more responsive. He’s trying to improve responsiveness on lower-end phones like the 520 which has a huge market share amongst the WP devices.

Thomas notes other VLC geniuses are working on the VLC wrapper to Direct3D to bring further enhancements. The WP8.1 version is nearly ready to ship.

The WP and RT version just needs sorting of the ARM Compiler issue then they’ll hit the release button.

These screenshots are the real VLC, though the design might not be finished yet and may still change.
