Gartner has released some numbers (above) which echoes predictions by IDC (below) where according to analysts, by 2015, Symbian will disappear. Android will be on top. Second will be Windows Phone which will have larger market share than both iOS and RIM.

Gartner are less optimistic about Windows Phone but only just. 19.5% versus 20.9% (from IDC) this still however puts it larger than the 17.2% market share for iOS (doing a little better than IDC’s 15.3) and 11% for RIM (doing a little worse than the 13.7 from IDC). Well that push from Nokia has to go somewhere huh? And it seems to be in Windows Phone.

What’s interesting from Garner’s predictions is how much better Android will be doing by 2012. Already at 49%. However, this declines to 48% by 2015. A minor 1% but the first time a decline in growth is predicted/observed. This wasn’t shown in IDC’s numbers as they only include 2011/2015.

idc numbers

I also like how Gartner confirms Nokia was still number 1 in 2010 despite all those early Android cheers. We knew it was inevitable given the lack of sufficient push from Nokia for Symbian. Note also, Symbian was always meant to be replaced. Just last year it was with MeeGo. Now, it’s with Windows Phone.Nok=

Symbian’s competitors could not kill it; it was to be euthanised by Nokia.

Cheers Damen for the tip!
