Remember the imaging company that Nokia bought invested in, Pelican Imaging?

Pelican Imaging, the inventor of groundbreaking array camera technology for mobile devices, has announced the closing of $20M in Series C funding. New strategic investors include Qualcomm Incorporated, acting through its venture investment group, Qualcomm Ventures, and Nokia Growth Partners, and the round includes existing venture investors Globespan Capital Partners, Granite Ventures, InterWest Partners and IQT.

One of the interesting capabilities is the Lytro-style camera which uses 16 sensors to capture depth at every point so you can refocus afterwards.

Look what Qualcomm is talking about in their promo video for the powerful S800 processor. You can see that it looks like a large Lumia, no?

Qualcomm is working along with a ‘partner’ to produce advanced imaging capabilities that make the most of the Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. ‘This’ device has a 4×4 imaging array that enables 16 individual sensors. Here we can change the point of focus AFTER the image has been captured.

The only thing that might confuse is that in other demoes it has Android. Perhaps, as suggested in the tip, it could be to hide the OS? Or is Nokia making a Droid tablet? Or quite simply could it be not Nokia at all? But then again, what about the specific imaging gear? Has another company licensed this tech from Pelican prior to Nokia’s purchase? (Like the Face Swap thing in BB10 from Nokia owned Scalado)

Is that a light up button on the bezel? Possibly the Windows button?

go to camera tricks video = BOOM! instant Nokia rumored Tablet 😀

Reason:
– the video shows the 800 processor is capable of handling an array of 4×4 individual camera sensors.

– the Iconic (flat on top & bottom, curved on both sides) design from Nokia is seen on the tablet. plus aluminum body.

–  skinned the software (looks like android) to hide the actual OS. (just a hunch)

Take note he says:

“Qualcomm is working along with a PARTNER to produce advanced imaging capabilities…”

…I wonder who?

This maybe the next version of PureView, an umbrella name for Nokia’s attempts at pushing imaging rather than one particular technique.

Cheers drexter for the tip!
