Tom Warren gives up on WindowsPhone, switches to iPhone 6

Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 18.42.49I don’t know if this falls on the news of Microsoft giving out yet more of their ‘Microsoft exclusive apps’ like MSN NEWS/Weather etc to iOS and Android but WindowsPhone/Microsoft specialist, Tom Warren, writes on the Verge how he has given up on WindowsPhone.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/12/11/7377021/ive-given-up-on-windows-phone

He has gone and used other platforms before but now his switch is to be more permanent.

Tom’s made the move over to iOS (probably in hindsight a smarter move if you like the clean, consistent look of WindowsPhone/Lumia but don’t like all the niggles of android. I’m not as ecstatic about my own move – which I’m doing for learning purposes and will likely come back after Windows 10).

What frustrated Tom?

On the hardware side: The 1520 was great but too big. M8 from HTC was nice but camera is potato. Microsoft’s focus is on low end and Tom calls to mind the cancelled McLaren super phone.

Software side: Not enough third party apps to cover the gap.

Tom still loves WP and agrees that there’s a lot to love about it straight out of the box. But the phone should also grow with you. To an extent, I believe the OS does that but Tom feels that having just the one unavailable app can ruin that for him. So in that sense, it’s probably the smartest move to go on the usually first platform of choice for apps (though not always, there are the rare WP exclusives :p).

What does Tom want?

Quality apps on a true flagship. This might be through Android apps on windowsphone though that might be BB10 all over again.

This would be a great opportunity for Microsoft to ‘Win’ back their lost fans and gain new ones with their new Windows flagship (pun not intended). Or it could be a sign of disaster ahead.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!
