Maemo 5 firmware update available 1.2009.44-1 [new app manager icons]

| January 11, 2010 | Reply

There’s a mini update available for the N900 to 1.2009.44-1 (18.5MB – from 1.2009.42.11).

Changes as far as I’m aware:

  • New icons in app manager [see screenshots below]
  • Red Pill mode is now gone [If you need to google Red Pill mode for N900 you didn't need it]
  • Ovi Catalogue is added to app manager (some new apps from that)
  • Application lists stay in the position you last left it after installing an app (before, the app list would refresh and you’d start back up the top – annoying if you were trying out apps S-Z)
  • Ovi Store is accessible  (via web)
  • There are a lot of minor updates, complete change log shown in the final screenshot (via Hiren) at the end of this post.

It came up this morning as a notification in the status bar.

I wasn’t going to bother with it as it’s supposedly just there in preparation for the proper firmware update ota. (Some have mentioned it even causes some lags). But I’ve been reinstalling my N900 firmware this morning anyway (to fix a bug) and thought I might as well try.  [update, there are some changes. Can't check them all right now as I'm now in a meeting till  3]

If you don’t get the update notification, you can get it manually get the update by going to App Manager>Update [NOT VIA Nokia Software Updater, though it might be possible, it's a much larger update and you'll have to restore any backups as you'll lose your data this way]. You’ll get a list of applications that can be updated as well as “Maemo 5 1.2009.44-1″.

Back up is advisable, though it hasn’t seemed to have wiped anything like a normal update.

Oh – the app manager has new icons [instead of just words]

Some things I was hoping for in the new firmware: click

    can’t wait to ask…so what’s new????

    • Jay Montano says:

Nothing much really. It’s supposedly just there in preparation for the “big” update.

You do get new icons in app manager though (previously they were just words in panels)

why would you want to be on that network!!! and most likely a problem with three’s sim’s, not the phone

The things that I think have been updated are the following (based on the packages in the “updating” tab):
icons, application manager, browser controls/bookmarks/, clock settings, SIP, Operator wizard settings, WLAN settings, themes, welcome settings, TV out settings, ringtones, etc. you can see the full list here if it makes any more sense to you then it did me!: http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/3020/n900updatedetails.png

        That’s one huge screenshot!

        post updated with it.

You want to be on that network because its the most fast internet there is in most countries in europe, as to your dumbass comment regarding it being 3s fault, it is nokia that failed to deliver support for the sim cards. Something they’ve promised to fix in an upcoming firmware upgrade, therefore us with 3 sim cards, are a bit bummed out about the imcompetence of nokia.

        • llaadd says:

well I’m in the UK and even if it is one of the fastest…the problem is that no one can get signal because they are using Orange’s network…but I won’t bother going into that…that’s a whole other argument!

    • Felix says:

I’m sure you did this, but just in case.
When you go to application manager, you get three icons: uninstall, download and update. Select the download icon and the following screen will be the updated icons screen you see everywhere on the web.
