Just announced: Apple iPad Specifications (Should smartphones and netbooks be scared?)
Steve Jobs announced today that Apple is the largest mobile company in the world (in terms of revenue). Bigger than Sony, Samsung and even Nokia.
They said that their new device had to be something in between a laptop and a smartphone. For simple tasks like web browsing/email/apps, Jobs says there needs to be a third category.
“If there’s gonna be a third category, it has to be better at these tasks — otherwise it has no reason for being.”
Is that a netbook?
“Now some people thought that was a netbook — the problem is that netbooks aren’t better than anything!”
Well…not really. Being a Uni student, if I’ve got to travel around from lecture to lecture, I’d rather type my notes up on a netbook (that has a keyboard) than a netbook/small laptop. (BT keyboard could help, but you’d need to lug that too)
Smartphones, you’ll always have with you. No need for a bag. You can spontaneously go browse a site, check maps, take a photo etc.
However, there are some great strengths with the iPad. Mostly due to the size of the screen. Gaming/Web Browsing/eBook reading..or iBook/Drawing/Video viewing/Sat Nav (but does it have gps?)…I think it’s not so much iPad vs Netbooks and Smartphones, there’s a whole different experience with iPad.

its ok!
one word GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY N900 FTW
A few years from now you’ll have a phone and one of these. Not necessarily an iPad, but something that looks almost exactly like an iPad.
I think the whole thing; hardware, software, concept and timing is a stroke of genius.
This wont be replacing pocket computers, but it’s certainly gunning for notebooks, laptops and desktops.
