N97 Ovi Maps Free Navigation Officially Available [UPDATE via N97 itself]

| January 27, 2010 | Reply

Nokia Conversations reports that the N97 is now supported officially (some may have already found N97 mini’s ovi maps .sis to have worked for them) for the new Ovi Maps which brings users free turn-by-turn walk and drive navigation

The new Ovi Maps is available through the software update client in the device. You simply open the Applications Folder, Software Update client (big green arrow) and choose the new Ovi Maps from the list.

[You might even get a prompt from Ovi Maps itself telling you an update is available, and it’ll bring you to SW update]

At the big announcement last week, N97 users were shocked to find out they were not on the list of supported handsets for free turn-by-turn navigation. But very quickly, Nokia said that it would be available a week later on the 28th (technically tomorrow)

You will need to be on firmware V2.0.x (some N97 users may not be able to get it yet but Nokia are apparently working on it)

My N97 is on V20.0.019 – Nokia Software Updater on computer says that’s the latest firmware update.

From Software update app on the N97 I can see the Ovi Maps 3.3 update.

I’m able to download it, but at the moment all I can get is “1 update failed”. Perhaps I still need to wait for NSU update??

You have to go into app manager and delete nokia maps, Then you can finish the installation.
    It works brilliantly. Great improvement.

I went into File Manager; then c drive and deleted nokia maps from there. The installation continued immediately from then and it works perfectly.

I have the same issue on my 5800.
Which file is nokia maps in C drive?

  • Neil Martin

Please understand I was annoyed with the way it was not working so I had a guess. I could still do format if I got it wrong. So I deleted file on C drive called mapinstaller. It worked instantly as the installation of new maps continued from where it left off. Good luck !

I can’t find the file mapinstaller on my 5800.
Maybe the name is different or it is elsewhere on 5800.

I have the same problem. Update failed and I can’t uninstall Ovi maps. I downloaded Nokia maps 3.3 but lost 9mb of memory while keeping the old Ovi maps 3.1. I uninstalled both but Ovi stayed while the new one left.

    What’s occuring?

  • Davyd

I have a small problem that even though my N97 has the very latest v21 firmware, I’ve not got, nor have I ever had, the SW Update Icon/feature in my apps folder or anywhere else.
Does anyone know how I can get round this?
